  • Entrepreneurship Division’s Plenary Session at AOM: Minority Entrepreneurship

(posted on behalf of @April Franco, Program Chair)

Over the past few years, there has been growing interest in minority entrepreneurship, with specific calls to support these entrepreneurs, who are often important engines for growth. At this year’s AOM Annual Meeting, the Entrepreneurship Division will host a virtual Plenary Session to discuss research on this topic, as well as identify avenues for future scholarship.

We are delighted to welcome Professors Damon Phillips (Columbia GSB), Frank Fossen (University of Nevada, Reno), and Marlene Orozco (Stanford University and Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative) to share insights from their research on minority entrepreneurship. Professor Phillips will present his work with Kylie Jiwon Hwang on the emergence of entrepreneurship as a viable option for people formerly incarcerated, providing a path forward given potentially discriminatory hiring practices. Frank Fossen will discuss his work with Rob Fairlie, which examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on minority entrepreneurship. Finally, Marlene Orozco will focus on her work with the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative on LatinX entrepreneurship and immigrant integration and pathways of social mobility through entrepreneurship.

Their presentations will lead to a discussion about minority entrepreneurship and how to support this key driver of growth, followed by a Q&A session with questions from the broader audience.

Please join us for the ENT Division’s virtual Plenary Session (in real time) on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at 10 a.m. (NY/EST). We look forward to seeing you soon!
