THE ANNUAL MEETING ISSUE

The Academy Returns to Its Roots

In 1936, Professors Charles L. Jamison of the University of Michigan and William N. Mitchell of the University of Chicago, sent letters to teachers of management courses inviting them to a meeting at the Quadrangle Club, University of Chicago, to discuss the formation of an organization of educators to advance the philosophy of management. Thus, the Academy was formed, along with an annual tradition of exploring the organization's purpose and presenting and discussing scholarly papers.

The Academy returns to its roots in Chicago, Illinois to mark the 78th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management August 10-14. This Special Edition of the AcadeMY News offers meeting information ranging from session highlights to technology resources, dining and entertainment options in and around Chicago, as well as exciting news about our upcoming Specialized Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel. Be sure to explore the 2018 Dynamic Edition of the Annual Meeting Program, which features a video from this year's Program Chair, Jacqueline Coyle-Shapiro, noting highlights of the All-Academy Theme, "Improving Lives". And if you've never been to Chicago, President-elect Carol Kulik offers some great tips on how to make the most of your trip.

Onsite Information

This section contains important onsite information to help you make the most of your Annual Meeting experience. If you have any questions, please contact the Meetings Team.

REGISTRATION HOURS

AOM staff will be available in the Hyatt Regency Chicago, Grand Ballroom Foyer to assist you with check-in or with any other questions.

Registration Hours:

Friday, August 10, 7:30AM-8:00PM
Saturday-Tuesday, August 11-14 from 8:00AM-5:00PM

AOM TECHNOLOGY CENTERS

Print your badge, access Wi-Fi on your device or computer provided by AOM, or simply plug in beginning Thursday, August 9 at 5:00PM through Tuesday, August 14 at 3:00PM. Access the Tech Flyer for locations and additional information.

EXPRESS CHECK-IN KIOSKS

As a convenience to pre-registered attendees, the Academy of Management will provide touch-screen AOM Express Check-In Kiosks around the clock beginning Thursday, August 9 at 5:00PM through Tuesday, August 14 at 3:00PM so attendees can print their name badges, collect their programs and tote bags, and begin attending sessions.

AOM RESOURCE CENTER

Located directly outside the Exhibit Hall, the AOM Resource Center is your one-stop shop for navigating the Annual Meeting with representation from Membership, Publications, Program, Housing, Placement Services, General Information and Technology@AOM. All of your questions can be answered in one convenient location. The AOM Resource Center will be available Friday, August 10, 7:30AM-5PM and Saturday-Tuesday, August 11-14, 8AM-5PM.

GETTING AROUND CHICAGO

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

The AOM Housing Reservation System is now CLOSED for new reservations. If you have questions regarding your reservations, please contact the hotel directly. For those still requiring reservations, we provide information on hotel locations on our Hotel Accommodations web page. Conference rates may no longer be available.

SPECIAL MOBILITY NEEDS

We will work to accommodate members who require added assistance. Please contact us at needs@aom.org.

VALID TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

If traveling to the Annual Meeting from outside of the United States, you are required to show a valid passport. Registrants without appropriate identification and travel documents, including passports and visas when applicable, may not be allowed to travel. You may even be retained at border or customs checkpoints by government authorities. Please remember to check with government agencies to determine visa and passport requirements, as well as clarify travel tariffs and taxes that may be required by government agencies when entering or leaving the United States.

*Special Notice to attendees directly impacted by the U.S. Immigration Travel Ban: Please notify Terese Loncar if you are planning to attend the 2018 AOM Annual Meeting in Chicago.

View the Virtual Exhibit Hall online and stop by the Grand Ballroom, Ballroom Level in the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Friday from 6:00PM-8:00PM, Saturday and Sunday 8:00AM-5:00PM, and Monday between 8:00AM-2:00PM, to see the latest in management tools and literature, interact with exhibitors, and enjoy a cup of coffee.

EXHIBIT HALL HIGHLIGHTS

"Streets of Chicago" with AOM at the Exhibit Hall Opening Reception on Friday, August 10, 6:00-8:00PM. Visit with exhibitors, and enjoy local, themed foods and don’t forget your complimentary drink voucher (on your attendee badge).
Be one of the first 200 attendees to visit the Exhibit Hall Saturday, Sunday, or Monday and receive a swag bag sponsored by the 2018 exhibitors.
Come relax and mingle with the exhibitors during dedicated exhibit hours on Sunday, 10:30AM-12:30PM.

PLEASE NOTE: Exhibits will be closed on Tuesday, August 14, so make sure to visit before Monday at 2:00PM to take advantage of exhibitor discounts.

This year's Annual Meeting Program is available in three electronic formats: Online version, Dynamic Edition, and Mobile App. These versions of the program are easily accessible, simple to use, and they help reduce waste. Printed programs will be offered onsite in limited quantities.

Start-up to Scale-up Conference Registration Opening Soon!

The second in a series of specialized conferences scheduled for 2018, “Start-up to Scale-up” taking place in Tel Aviv, Israel, December 17-19, 2018, features research on the unique organizational challenges of start-up firms and entrepreneurial corporations that seek to grow within and beyond their established markets.

Stay tuned for up-to-the-minute conference announcements, including registration opening.
