    Dear All:

    I am teaching Organizational Learning course for the first time. This is a level four undergraduate course. I would really appreciate if you can suggest in-class activities, experiential exercises, case studies, video clips, and other materials that can supplement the lectures. Particularly materials for the following topics would be helpful:

    1. ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING AS STRATEGY
    2. LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE AS COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
    3. KNOWLEDGE CREATION
    4. INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING

    I look forward to your replies and suggestions.

    Regards,

    Hi Samina;

    Without knowing the specifics of your syllabus, I'm not sure I can give specific recommendations.

    However; I find that there are a number of really good videos on YouTube. The pro is that there are many videos. The con is that there are also bad ones. So, you will need to invest some time to "separate the wheat from the chaff".

    I've also found that there are a number of good examples of OD topics in movies. And, there are some journal articles written on the subject. Also, you can just "Google" the topic you are looking for. As an example, Google the phrase: "Organization Learning in movies" or " organizational learning strategy in movies".

    I have had very good feedback from students in incorporating movies in the course content.

    You should be able to get these articles on-line:

    T. Scott Graham, Ph.D.
    Michael Z. Sincoff, Ph.D.
    Bud Baker, Ph.D.

    T. Scott Graham, Ph. D.

    Nope this helps.

    ‎Hello! In my global OD classes, I used You Tube videos of the American version of The Office. Brilliant examples of how not to behave in an organization, touching on all the topics you cited.

    Margaret;

    Glad you mentioned that. Reminded me about clips from the movie "Office Space". Many available on You Tube. "Classic" movie about dysfunction based in an IT company, but applicable anywhere.

    Hi Samina,

    If your students have any work experience (ie experience of 'life inside organisations'), you could use the 'Learning Company Questionnaire" with them - not new but still a very useful diagnostic tool to identify organisational learning. If you get your students to answer the questions in relation to organisations that they know, you could tap into their own experiences. You can also use the questionnaire (and the 11 'characteristics of a learning company' which it is based upon) as a starting point for discussion, ie get students to discuss whether they agree or disagree with the criteria, and whether they would like to work in an organisation that fulfils those criteria.

    The full questionnaire is only available from the authors (Mike Pedler, John Burgoyne & Tom Boydell), but years ago I've used a slightly simplified version, which is in the appendix to the report "Learning to Succeed" (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/270588152_Learning_to_Succeed_Organisational_Learning_in_the_Surveying_Profession).

    Good luck with your search!
    Best regards,
    Fides

    Hi Samina -

    you may find some of the content of my 2009 book "Designing the Smart Organization" useful. It contains a framework for linking strategy, organization, and learning architectures, and 10 case studies about interesting practices from global corporations such as Siemens, Nov. There is also an instruction guide available. Here is a link to the amazon page where you will find more  info.

    Good luck with your course,

    Roland
