    Dear Careers Division Members,

We are so excited to present the Careers Community on Connect@AOM!

We know that Careers division members are eager for opportunities to network with each other, to build relationships and to share and exchange professional resources. The Careers Community makes this easy to do! The Discussion feature allows you to participate in threaded conversations where you can respond to previous conversations or start your own on a topic of your choosing. Documents and other multimedia files can be shared in a centralized resource library, accessible to all. Members can also contribute to our calendar of events, creating a valuable one-stop resource for all of the important events, calls for papers or other professional development opportunities that are of interest to our community.

Are you ready to get started? You can login to the community using the same username and password that you use to access your AOM member profile.

To kick off the discussion, we'd love to know what you love about working in the Careers field! To post an answer to the group, use the "Reply to discussion" link found to the right of this message in your email.

We hope we are excited to join the conversation with this new member benefit! See you at Connect@AOM!

Thanks Corinne, for kicking things off. Welcome everyone to Connect@AOM and the Careers Community!

Here are four simple steps members can make to quickly take advantage of the new system:

    1. Update you member profile - If you want to, add a photo and tell us a little about your professional interests and background.
    2. Start a conversation - post a message to the Careers Discussion group.

    3. Share a resource - visit the Library and share a document, video, or other multimedia file. Sample folders have been created in the Library already, and we welcome your contributions!

    4. Select your notification preferences - You have been subscribed to the Daily Digest version of the Careers Community, meaning you'll get one email each day containing all of the previous day's posts. You may elect to change to real time, weekly digest or no emails, allowing you to join the conversation at your leisure. Click the orange "Settings" button on the Community home to select your email preferences.

    Hi Everyone:

In response to Corrine's question, what do you love about careers-there is so much to love. We are a friendly, welcoming group. People often join as PhD students and remain members throughout their careers. Our leadership positions are filled by a diverse set of individuals from both big and small universities.

Corrine, Scott, Bert and the Executive Committee have a done a wonderful job of moving our division forward. Just look at the great events on our program.

Lauren Keating has once again organized the excellent Careers in Rough session that helps scholars at all stages of their career develop their work for publication. If you haven't attended one of these sessions, please talk with Lauren and submit for the 2018 program.

Our division has always done a terrific job of providing doctoral students with a developmental consortium, but we've taken another major step forward. Career division member Bob Ford and CASS have organized events for more senior scholars. There are many of these sessions on the program.  The Monday, August 7th session (10-11 am Hyatt Regency in Hanover Hall D) with Glenn Ruffenach, the former Encore Editor for the Wall Street Journal looks especially interesting as well as the symposium "Then & Now: Beyond Turnover" (3-4:40 pm Hyatt Regency in Inman) which features top scholars, including Julia Teahen, Tom Lee, Maria Kraimer and Beni Halvorsen).

What do you think-what do you love about our division?

    Take Care, Sherry

    Dear Colleagues:

I'm happy to join the Careers community!  Corinne asked what we liked about the Careers field and Sherry reminded us about what we love about the Careers Division (good people!  great conversations!  good parties and good times!).

I found the Careers Division because of good people (I won't name any names so no one feels responsible!).  But I love the careers field because career is an integral part of one's identity.  I am very interested in identity issues.  But with careers, the identity is different for everyone AND it changes over lifespan.  So it's a field that is dynamic, so it is challenging to study, and involves one's identity.  What could be better?

I'm looking forward to talking about careers next week at the Academy of Management meeting and continuing the discussion here, on this discussion list.

I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks, so it's going to take me a little while to become facile with this new system.  But I'm pleased and proud that the Careers Division is, as usual, at the front of the pack in terms of trying new things!

    Thanks for listening!

I love the topic area!  Our studies of how people's careers unfold to identify the facilitators and barriers are critically important to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion in our workplaces.  Building research and theory on how talent is recognized and developed provides a foundation of knowledge supporting the achievement and self-actualization of people from all backgrounds and identity groups.

    We do important work!

Also, I love the community!  In the Careers Division, I've met some of my favorite AOMers and made friends from all over the world.  Looking forward to seeing you all in Atlanta!

    Hi Corinne and colleagues,

I love working on career related topics because there is room to contribute in a multi-disciplinary way and by theorizing context.
Besides, the CAR community rocks! so welcoming, developmental and friendly. I learned a lot from my fellow colleagues at the Academy.
can't wait to see you all in Atlanta.

    Hi all,

I agree with everything that has been said above. CAR is great because of its diverse member group, its contents, its friendly and open atmosphere, and also because both senior and junior scholars get the chance to have leadership positions. All around great experience to be part of this group and to contribute to the future of our division as an executive team member!
