Richard Hackman Award for the Dissertation that Most Significantly Advances the Study of Groups
INGRoup values and promotes diversity in theoretical and methodological perspectives for examining and understanding group processes and outcomes. This award goes to a new PhD whose doctoral dissertation shows the greatest potential to advance the understanding of groups beyond one discipline. The award recipient is recognized at the INGRoup conference and on the INGRoup website, receives a commemorative plaque, and receives complementary registration and an invitation to present their dissertation in a feature session at the following year's INGRoup conference. Peer and self-nominations are submitted before the annual conference.

Nominations may be submitted by peers or self, and should consist of (1) a letter of nomination that outlines the contributions made by the nominee in their dissertation work to knowledge about groups and teams; (2) a ten-page dissertation summary; (3) a full electronic copy of the dissertation; and (4) the nominee's vita. See the criteria for the award below for more detail. All materials should be emailed to the Hackman Award Committee in care of Dr. Pri Shah (pshah@umn.edu) with the subject header "INGRoup Hackman Award Nomination". Nominations for the 2020 award are due on May 1, 2021 by midnight.
Criteria & Eligibility for the Award
The dissertation must:
- Advance the science of small groups and teams
- Advance or have clear potential to advance the understanding of small groups and teams beyond a single discipline.
- Be research accomplished in a completed doctoral dissertation completed within the calendar year before submitting the nomination. Exception: The inaugural award in 2014 was open to dissertations that were completed in the two-year period of 2012-2013.
Guidelines for Nomination
- Nominations may be submitted by any member of INGRoup; self-nominations are welcome.
- Nominations will consist of four documents:
- A letter from the nominee and nominator (if not a self-nomination), specifically outlining the contributions the dissertation makes to knowledge about groups and teams, based on the award criteria. The nominee's letter should also include the title of the dissertation, dissertation completion date, degree-granting school, and names of the dissertation chair and committee members.
- A dissertation summary (no more than 10 pages; 1" margins all around, double-spaced, 12 point font). This summary will be used in the first round of evaluation.
- A full electronic copy of the dissertation. This will only be used in the final round of evaluation.
- The nominee's curriculum vita.
- All nomination materials (letter(s) of nomination, dissertation summary and electronic copy of the dissertation, and nominee's vita) should be assembled electronically (.pdf format preferred), clearly marked with the names and contact information of the nominee and nominator, and submitted no later than the due date via email to the Hackman Award Committee in care of Pri Shah (pshah@umn.edu) with the subject header "INGRoup Hackman Award Nomination".
Administrative Procedures
- An INGRoup Awards Committee, selected by the President, will review the letters of nomination and supporting materials of all nominees and make a recommendation to the INGRoup Board.
- The INGRoup Board may either endorse or reject the recommendation of the Awards Committee but may not substitute a nominee of its own.
- In the absence of a nominee who is deemed deserving of the award by both the Awards Committee and the INGRoup Board, the award may be withheld.
