  • 1.  Doctoral and Early Career Events for CMS Scholars at AOM

    Hi everyone

I have seen on Twitter concern about doctoral and early career academics feeling isolated at the AOM conference.  I remember that feeling well myself. As I'm involved with organizing the PhD & earlier career workshop for Vancouver in 2020 I'd be interested in hearing ideas that people have about how we might address the issue.
Please share any ideas you have on this platform.

    Hi Mark and all,

that is a very valid concern. Do we get all early career scholars/PhD students with the workshop? Do we need another format? Maybe something like a social for early career scholars/PhD students? Or a breakfast or something like that. Another idea would be to offer something like a mentor/mentee program for AOM2020 where PhD students and early career scholars can pick/choose among several mentors and they meet at least once during the conference. Could the CMS division offer such a thing online, with profiles of potential mentors (interests, vitae etc.)?

    Cheers
    André

I remember the feeling well too, In addition to Andre's suggestions, another idea is to have a permanent social space during the conference for CMS scholars.  To make sure  PhD students and early career academics felt welcome there, some of us could take the responsibility to be there at certain times and to ensure ECAs did not get left out of any conversations taking place, or to simply facilitate introductions.

    Hi all,
What I found a very nice initiative was what the GDO division organized for early careers this year during a consortium. The organiser had asked (in advance) to all the inscribed attendees who the GDO 'star' academic was they would most like to have a coffee with. He had then organised a meet&greet/speed-date/mentoring/breakfast event. It appeared that almost all of the 'star' academics were very keen to participate. Altough I did not attend myself, the feedback from 'both sides' was very positive.
    Kind regards!

As a PhD student, there's nobody I really know well enough to approach and talk to, and there's a sense of social distance as well, which means that it's difficult to approach anyone from a position of unfamiliarity. So, someone in that position would think something to the effect of, "I'm a PhD student/newly minted Assistant Professor and that's a well-known and accomplished scholar whose work I'm citing in my dissertation or my newly published paper, so how do I get to introduce myself to them without looking like a nervous wreck or a bungler, especially when I want to make a good impression for the job market or in building up a research partnership that gets me tenure?" There's a lot of anxiety involved, and if you have young academics and PhD students afraid that each social interaction is going to be crucial for their future, they're going to feel especially isolated because none of them are willing to make the first move, to reach out and to just talk to someone different.

And even when PhD/ECS manage to speak to senior scholars, they often seem to sense that the senior scholars are more interested in catching up with each other, making it harder to network. I've often left conversations if I'm meeting a senior scholar or journal editor for the first time and they then meet someone else they haven't met - simply because our conversations are a lower priority item and I don't want to impose on the senior person's time for fear of making a bad impression.

Andre's idea is very good and in fact a mentorship plan was brought into effect, but my mentor was unfortunately unable to come to AOM, and any other potential mentors of interest were too busy or already taken. So instead, I would like to further Carole's suggestion and suggest an organized facilitated meet and greet during the CMS social, in which, in case a proper mentor is not available, PhD students and early career faculty could meet at least one mid/late career academic who can get to know them and their interests well. They, in turn, help introduce the students/EC faculty to some of the more senior scholars and journal editors with similar interests and help get started off with areas of interest and future research projects. How does this sound?

    Hi,

I also heard positive feedback on the GDO mentoring initiative. A similar issue came up in the PDW on inclusion for disabled academics. Online opportunities for mentoring before the conference would be an option which could overcome the difficulties of mentors not being present at the conference as well as offering support to those new to the conference or who needed to strategize their participation (fatigue, social anxiety etc). This could be combined with a meet and greet (for those mentors or other academics) at the conference. I would suggest considering other spaces/times than (or as well as) the social for people who might find the noise/crowds a challenge. Final point, making sure any meet/greet activities take place in accessible spaces.

    Best wishes, Jannine

    Hello all!

We must collectively engage in making the AoM conference a better experience to all (incoming) members. Thanks for starting this conversation here, Mark.
Thus, I would also suggest a second moment for the consortium with thematic tables where people could sit and start discussions around their shared interests.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this post - all the replies are very helpful - and keep them coming, there's obviously plenty of time before ~Vancouver.
