The Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines (WAIM) Research Coordination Network (RCN) (https://waim.network/) brings together researchers working to develop the understanding needed to jointly design both sides of the human-technology frontier in work settings where people interact with intelligent machines. Our main activity over the past few years has been organizing workshops and an annual conference, but both are on hold due to the ongoing COVID crises. Indeed, with everything that's going on, research may currently be lower-priority or even on pause for many people. Yet, as a research coordination network, we'd like to provide a small means of social support that may spur you on even in these challenging times.
To this end, we are organizing a series of mini paper-development workshops, to be held virtually throughout the summer and perhaps beyond. These mini-workshops aim to recreate the valuable small-group discussions of their face-to-face cousins by bringing together authors and a moderator for discussion around work in progress. We see these groups as a means for providing both beneficial feedback for developing and refining ideas, as well as a place to make sense of how to navigate the world's "new normal" as a researcher.
This email is a call for participation on both sides of the table. If you have a paper you're working on that's at a point where it would benefit from discussion or if you'd be willing to moderate a group discussion and provide your own feedback on a paper, please register your interest here:
We'll use your responses to put together groups with as much shared interest as possible. Once the groups are formed, it will be up to the group members to share papers and pick a time and a medium and to run their meeting.
The call will be open indefinitely and groups will be formed periodically, so feel free to sign up whenever you have a paper at an appropriate point. The workshops are open to anyone working in the broad area of work in the age of intelligent machines, so feel free to forward this call to students or colleagues who might be interested.
