AoM PDW: Digitization, Platforms and Ecosystems: Implications for International Business Theory and Practice

In recent years, the emergence of novel digital technologies, digital platforms and associated ecosystems have begun to radically reshape the nature and structure of the global economy. These changes make it necessary to reassess long held assumptions about the contemporary global business environment and improve international business (IB) theories to better fit these emerging realities. This PDW aims to examine the broader implications of digital platforms and ecosystems as a context for global business and consider how digital technology-related theoretical perspectives, ideas and concepts could be incorporated into existing IB theories to make them better reflect the contemporary global business environment. The PDW panelists will engage with the workshop attendees in a robust discussion on a wide-ranging set of topics and themes at the intersection of IB and digital technologies including how digital platforms and ecosystems engender new ways of internationalization, accelerate international entrepreneurship, redefine firm-specific and location-specific advantages, and promote new forms of dynamic capabilities in MNEs.
