Fellowships in the CAS Research Group
    "Platforms as Organizational Forms "

Center for Advanced Studies, LMU Munich

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich is a forum for intensive international academic exchange. Its purpose is to promote cooperation with national and international Visiting Fellows who work closely on collaborative projects with LMU professors. In order to intensify cooperation between researchers at LMU Munich and leading experts from other universities, the Center has set up a major program, the CAS Research Groups.

The CAS Research Group "Platforms as Organizational Forms" is initiated by Professor Dr. Tobias Kretschmer (Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization, LMU) and will commence its work in October 2020.

The CAS Research Group will investigate the distinctiveness of platforms as an organizational form. Platforms play an important economic role and are characterized by connecting two sides, e.g. a buyer and a seller of a good or service. Notably, the sides usually make decisions independent from the platform owner, yet they share a common goal, the viability of the so-called platform ecosystem including platform, complements and buyers.

As organizations are defined as multi-agent entities with identifiable boundaries working towards a common goal, thinking of platforms in the common dimensions of firm (e.g. the platform owner) or market (e.g. the complementors making independent decisions to join the platform) may not describe platforms adequately. We will think of platforms as a set of solutions to four fundamental problems of organization: task division, task allocation, incentive provision and information provision in this Research Group to join research on platform markets and organization design.

The CAS Research Group will bring together internationally renowned researchers who are invited to LMU Munich to contribute to the Group's research. Applications are welcomed from all the main substantive sub-disciplines of management and economics, including strategy, organization theory and design, industrial organization, and economic sociology, but also from experts in empirical and theoretical methods relevant to the CAS Research Group. Both senior and junior postdoc researchers are encouraged to apply. The Center for Advanced Studies will provide financial and organizational support for visits of between four weeks and nine months during the period between October 2020 and September 2021. Travel and accommodation will be paid for and an expense allowance or other compensation (according to individual agreement) will be provided to cover operating costs or as recompense for any loss of income sustained. Guests will receive a workspace in the Center and will have access to all its facilities. Visiting researchers will find an open and stimulating research environment in an interdisciplinary setting.

Applications should consist of a brief outline (1-2 pages) of the expertise, field of exchange and intended contribution to the CAS Research Group. Applications should also contain relevant credentials and a résumé including a list of the most recent publications. In order to strengthen the role of women in research, female scholars are strongly encouraged to apply.

Tobias Kretschmer will be attending the 2019 SMS Annual Conference in Minneapolis, and will be available for informal enquiries about the CAS Research Group.
