PhD Program in Administration: Specialization in Organization Studies
The doctoral program in administration at York University Schulich School of Business offers outstanding students the opportunity to develop the skills that will enable them to conduct leading edge research. Graduates of the program have had successful careers in universities, government and industry, in Canada and abroad.
What is Organization Studies? The Organization Studies specialization is designed for aspiring scholars who are interested in researching the changing dynamics of organizations in contemporary society. Organization Studies draws from a number of social science fields including psychology, sociology, and economics. Topics of study include but are not limited to: organizational behaviour; organizational theory; leadership; diversity and inclusion; sustainability; negotiation and conflict management; stigma; teams; institutional theory. A major strength of the program is its emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative approaches in research.
Program overview
- Coursework: Coursework prepares students to do research in their major field.
- Comprehensive exam: Each student must pass a comprehensive examination before proceeding to formal work on her or his dissertation..
- Dissertation proposal: Candidates prepare and orally defend a written proposal to conduct original dissertation research.
- Dissertation and oral examination: Candidates write a dissertation based on original research carried out under the supervision of a supervisory committee
- Typical time to completion is 5 years
Admission requirements: All applicants to the PhD program must meet the general admission requirements of the Schulich School of Business, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and the University Senate including:
- a four-year honours undergraduate degree from a recognized University, or qualifications accepted as equivalent by the Senate Committee, and
- a basic understanding of calculus, linear algebra and analytic geometry at the university level.
- A Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score.
