    Dear HCM Members:

Below please see a description of this year's AOM conference security protocol:

    AOM Security Protocols

The safety and well-being of our attendees remain our top priority, and we have implemented a comprehensive set of security protocols designed to ensure a secure and seamless experience for everyone. Here's an overview of our standard security measures:

    1. Pre-Conference Coordination: AOM staff connect with local security teams well in advance of the conference and again on-site before the event begins. This proactive collaboration guarantees that all parties are fully aligned on security expectations and procedures, setting the stage for a safe conference environment.
    2. External Security Team: AOM hires a dedicated outside security team that works closely with the hotels and facilities to implement a consistent set of emergency and security protocols. This experienced team is well-versed in managing large events and will facilitate seamless coordination across all venues, enhancing our preparedness and response capabilities.
    3. Vigilance for Disturbances and Protests:
Given that the AOM Annual Meeting has been the subject of protests in the past, we maintain a standard approach to handle such situations. Our standard practice allows peaceful protests in common or shared spaces, provided that attendees do not disrupt meetings or private events. Attendees engaged in disruptive activities may be asked to disperse to maintain a respectful and productive environment.
      • In instances of peaceful protests, similar to what we experienced in Philadelphia a few years ago, security personnel will be on hand to monitor the situation, ensuring it remains non-disruptive.
      • Should a protest escalate beyond peaceful means, we ask all attendees to defer to our security personnel and adhere to established protocols. Consistency is key in handling these scenarios, including determining the appropriate time to involve local law enforcement if necessary.

Collaboration with Chicago CVB and Local Venues

We are actively engaging in discussions with the Chicago Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and are working closely with the AOM Program Chair to strike the right balance of security measures and preparedness for any potential issues. We have requested detailed assessments from each property involved, as well as insights from the Chicago CVB, to ensure our protocols are comprehensive and tailored to the unique Chicago environment.

AOM Code of Ethics and Professional Norms

Beyond security protocols, AOM's code of ethics and professional norms are the cornerstones of our community. Many divisions and interest groups, most recently the SIM Division, have proactively communicated with members about the norms and expectations as we approach the Chicago conference. While criticizing and debating ideas is integral to the academic community, we stand firm that criticizing and harassing members is not acceptable.

If any member experiences harassment of any kind within the context of the AOM Annual Meeting, please email ombuds@aom.org
