    Stream 6:Feminist perspectives on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future of work

    The rapid development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is profoundly reshaping work and organizations. As AI systems become more prevalent across industries and job functions, there is an urgent need to examine their impacts through a feminist lens (Wellner & Rothman, 2020). This stream aims to advance the emerging concept of FeminAI - the intersection of feminist theory and AI - by critically analyzing the gendered implications of AI in the workplace and proposing feminist approaches to AI development and use.

    We invite empirical, conceptual, and methodological contributions that explore how AI technologies impact gender dynamics in various contexts, including the workplace, and how feminist principles can inform the development, implementation, and governance of AI systems to promote gender equality and challenge existing biases (Leavy, 2018).

    Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

    • Technofeminist critiques and counterstrategies for AI-driven technological disruptions in the workplace
    • Intersectional perspectives on how AI impacts individuals with multiple marginalized identities at work
    • Exploring dynamics of power and inequalities in AI-mediated future work and organizing
    • Developing feminist design principles or governance frameworks for more equitable AI systems
    • Decolonizing AI development and implementation in organizational contexts
    • Indigenous perspectives on gender, AI, and the future of work
    • Critically examining the role of AI in shaping inclusion and exclusion in digital work environments
    • New forms of gender bias and discrimination emerging in AI-driven work processes
    • Fostering digital inclusion while leveraging AI technologies in crisis contexts
    • Changing workforce dynamics related to AI adoption and exploring impacts across generations

    We particularly welcome submissions that:

    • Develop novel theoretical insights at the intersection of feminist thought and AI studies
    • Employ innovative and sensitive methodological approaches to studying FeminAI
    • Examine understudied contexts, especially perspectives from the Global South
    • Propose concrete interventions to address gender biases in AI
    • Highlight voices and experiences of women interacting with or impacted by AI technologies in the workplace
    • Take an intersectional approach to understanding AI impacts
    • Critically reflect on the meaning and future of work in relation to AI and gender

    Abstracts of approximately 500 words (excluding references) must be submitted to the FourWaves GWO2025 submission system. No independent abstract submissions (i.e., an abstract submitted to someone's personal email) will be considered for acceptance or presentation at the conference. Stream convenors will be conducting a blind review process and redirecting abstracts to the organising committee for consideration in the open stream if appropriate. The abstract itself should then not have any author details included to ensure this blind review process. Abstract formatting specifics are available in the submission system.

    Conference Abstracts will be due by 25th January, 2025. No extensions to this deadline will be possible as some participants will need appropriate time and justification documents to secure visas to attend the conference onsite.
