    Position Description

    Area: Strategy and Entrepreneurship

    Duration: 1 year

    Start Date: October 1, 2024

    Salary: USD$70,000 per annum, plus University of Maryland health benefits

    Job Description:

    The postdoctoral scholar will be part of a research team to support an NSF-funded project that uses machine learning and large language models to analyze business information. The scholar will work with Professors Waverly Ding, Anil Gupta and Kunpeng Zhang at the Smith School of Business, University of Maryland at College Park to develop techniques to analyze business texts that answer questions relating to firms' ESG-related practices.

    The primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher include:

    • Planning and assisting with data analysis of business texts to develop new measures relating to firm ESG activities
    • Developing new research ideas based on the products of the analytical work
    • Implementing and developing LLM-based models for textual data analysis
    • Collaborate with the research team on new reports based on the developed dataset
    • Collaborate with the research team on new research papers aimed at top academic journals in strategy and information sciences
    • Assist with the training of doctoral students with the new analytical techniques developed from the project
    • Presenting research in seminars and academic conferences and to relevant parties in the business community
    • Engage with the Smith school research community to advance the research programs of interest to the school's faculty

    Qualifications:

    • Recent Ph.D. in Computer/Data Science (specialized in machine learning), Information Systems, and Management & Strategy
    • Experience with analyzing large corpus of textual data with large language models
    • Experience working with interdisciplinary research teams is preferred
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
