Stanford Health Policy AHRQ Postdoctoral Fellowship Announcements (for 2025 Start)

The Stanford University Department of Health Policy seeks to appoint up to two post-doctoral fellows for two-year positions beginning in the Summer of Fall of 2025.  These positions are part of the AHRQ-funded Health Services Research Training Program at Stanford, and offer training and research opportunities in health services research, health economics, decision sciences, and related fields.  This program offers opportunities to work in a cross-disciplinary setting with health policy scholars across multiple disciplines including social sciences, research methodologies, and clinical medicine.  Fellows are able to take advantage of mentored research as well as the rich environment of seminar, workshops, courses, and other resources for skill and career development.

The following specific opportunities for fellowships are available this application cycle, and applicants should indicate their specific interest in up to two of these opportunities.

    1. Opportunities for individuals with training in clinical medicine who wish to pursue training and research in health services research, health economics, decision sciences, or related disciplines.  Fellows with these interests would be paired with a primary mentor associated with the fellowship program who has compatible research interests.

    1. Professor Lee Sanders is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in health-services research or econometrics. The fellow will work on projects in health services research relevant to the impact of immigration policy on maternal and child health. This work will support health policy development and decision-making across immigration policy and Medicaid policy. Building on a data-analytic partnership between Health Policy, Pediatrics, and the Immigration Policy Lab – we aim to apply rigorous methodologic approaches to examine Medicaid claims data to examine the impact of immigration policy on the health of children in immigrant families and communities. Prospective fellows in health services research, economics, epidemiology, sociology, or political science with skills in health-services research, causal-inference methods, and/or policy analysis are welcome to apply.

    1. Professor Sara Singer is seeking a postdoctoral fellow who will work with faculty and collaborators in the Health Leadership, Innovation, and Organizations (HELIO) Labs at multiple stages of the research process (from application to dissemination) and on multiple projects suited to their research interests and career goals. The fellow will use quantitative and qualitative health services research methods to advance theory and practice related to the organization of health delivery, including through teamwork, collaboration, and culture change and innovation.

    1. Prof. Marissa Reitsma is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in computational health policy.
The fellow will work on projects relevant to syndemics, which are co-occurring conditions that arise from shared drivers. Depending on individual interests, projects may focus on building multi-disease simulation models, examining the impacts of social determinants on constellations of conditions, evaluating health policy solutions for syndemics, or developing quantitative methods to support syndemics science. Modeling infrastructure exists for projects related to substance use, HIV, and hepatitis C virus, but scholars can work on other conditions, including cardiometabolic disease and cancer, based on interests and prior experience. Prospective fellows with experience in decision science, disease modeling, multimodal data synthesis, or machine learning/AI applied to healthcare data are welcome to apply.

    1. Professor Maria Polyakova is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in economics, preferably with background in health economics, public economics, or other fields of applied microeconomics. The fellow will work on projects in health economics using administrative data.  This work will support health policy development and decision-making in publicly funded healthcare programs. Prospective fellows in the field of economics or related disciplines with relevant experience in empirical data analysis or large-scale administrative data are welcome to apply."

    1. Professor Pascal Geldsetzer's group is looking for a postdoctoral fellow interested in health policy issues and clinical decision-making relating to primary care and preventive health services provision. The fellow will work on projects that focus on the application of econometric techniques for causal effect estimation in large-scale electronic health record data to inform health policy and clinical guidelines. A particular interest of the group lies in identifying preventive health services that would be most effective and cost-effective in improving health status among underserved and disadvantaged populations. The research aims to inform health policy development and decision-making across a wide area of clinical activities, with an emphasis on primary care. Prospective fellows would need to bring strong training in econometric techniques. Experience in clinical medicine is a plus but not required.
