    Hello all,

I want to seek out your assistance on diversity-related movies for a class assignment. I typically ask my students to watch a movie and then relate the movie to topics such as gender, identity, inter-group categorization, legal aspects of diversity, etc. I have used "The devil wears Prada" and "Remember the Titans" in previous assignments. I have considered the movie "Crash" but decided against it due to its R-rating. If you can share with me your choice of movies in your class and specific assignments related to the movies, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I use Crash with my diversity Undergraduates every year.  I warn them in advance about the R rating, but I think the insights from the movie far outweigh the reasons it has an R rating.  I've also shown "Milk," the Harvey Milk story.  And I've considered showing Pleasantville, which has some interesting themes running through it related to diversity, perception, etc.

You might try Spanglish or Philadelphia (both PG-13), although I don't think either of those will hit all of your themes.  I've also shown The Last Castle (rated R), but it doesn't include some of your desired themes, particularly gender.

Crash is excellent. I've used clips from X-men movies during initial conversations to access their prior knowledge about in and out group categorization. The Associate should be rated PG-13 and addresses gender bias and, to a lesser degree, racial bias.

I've used North Country, Hotel Rwanda, Iron Lady, The King's Speech, and the updated version of 12 Angry Men (it is in color and has jurors of different races). I've had students do movie reviews in the past that they select and some have made connections to diversity. I'll try to pull that and post, but wanted to mention these.

    Take care,

    Crash is great, indeed.

I also have used Crimson Tide for years (even before I was in a military environment). Not only does it cover "surface" diversity, it covers deeper and more salient dimensions- age, organizational status, areas of expertise, etc.

    Hi All:

I've used "Car Wash".  A bit dated, but full of diversity issues, gender issues, religion conversion, inclusion, sexual harassment, hostile work environment.

It is with Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

    Enjoy:

    Hi Andrew,

I do something similar but that takes the movie selection out of my hands.  I have done it as a final assignment for MBAs taking an OB class.

Each student selects a movie and analyzes it with topics from the class: gender, identity, personality, etc.  They complete a written report and give a 5-minute presentation.

This is fun to watch because you truly see what the students like and how they can apply concepts to movies that they like.  It may work for you to do it this way so that it's not just that one movie that you choose.

    Hope this helps.

    Andrew,

I prefer to use "Crash" in my classes despite the rating or language. If I am worried about the rating of the movie, then I maybe preventing my students from learning the actual content and the lessons of the movie.

If you are looking for a movie with clean language, then use "Finding Nemo." There is a lot of stereotype and innuendos in that movie.

    Hearty cheers,

Thank you.

I have several movies that I use. My favorite is Gattaca. But I also like Real Women Have
Curves, A League of Their Own, TransAmerica, Iron Jawed Angels, and Gravity.
It would be great if you can share a list of the movies that you get from responses to this
email. I'd love to see it and I bet other GDO members would too.
    Much success
    Stacy
ps--I use Crash too but only one or two scenes because the cursing is a bit much

Andrew, here's an offering from a long-time "lurker":  the documentary Murderball.  It depicts the members of the US quadriplegic rugby team as they prepare for an international competition.  As the back of the CD states, Murderball is "a film about tough, highly competitive rugby players: Quadriplegic rugby players...[It] tells the story of a group of world-class athletes unlike any ever shown on screen...it will smash every stereotype you ever had about the disabled...most of all, it is a film about standing up, even after your spirit -- and your spine -- has been crushed."

It's a great film, and my students always enjoyed it, while opening their hearts and minds.  It's something quite different from the excellent films others have suggested.

Kinky Boots (2005). It deals with the issues you mention but it takes place in the UK so the legal issues would differ from the US. It is also a case study in organizational change. Plus it's fun and has a great soundtrack.
