We invite you to submit a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) proposal for the Academy of Management Annual Meeting Knightian Uncertainty PDW program to be held synchronously, July 31st, 2021, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm (EDT).

Knightian uncertainty refers to where neither the possible outcomes nor the probability of those outcomes is known or knowable when a decision is being made. Management researchers have not ignored fundamental, or “Knightian,” uncertainty over the years, but systematic theorizing has been sparse and fragmented. This paper development workshop devotes itself to deepening the conversation about fundamental uncertainty and how to make it operationalizable and actionable. This workshop emphasizes repurposing uncertainty from being a background assumption to a foreground focal construct that enables better understanding of but not limited to opportunity creation and discovery, imagination, curiosity, and creativity.

Tentative Program

Part 1: Panel presentations and Q&A (140 minutes)

Part 2: Paper development sessions - paper discussions in breakout groups (80 minutes)

Part 3: Closing comments and Q&A (30 minutes)

PDW Proposals Must Include

  1. Title page with author information and keywords
  2. An abstract of up to 250 words
  3. A paper that you would like to receive feedback on (MS Word file, 35 pages of text maximum, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman Font)
  4. For less developed papers, we suggest minimum 4-5 pages in length so that the ideas can be communicated adequately

Proposals will be evaluated based on: (a) the fit with the theme of the PDW session. (b) the novelty of the topic or the degree of raising interesting new questions, (c) the expected substantive and networking benefit for participants (d) the interest of the individuals in the session and other groups within the broader Academy. We encourage submission of proposals which could address these four criteria. Please email aompdw2021@gmail.com with your proposal by June 30th, 2021. Participants will be notified of their breakout groups and receive the submitted papers within the same breakout group one week before the PDW. All papers’ abstracts will be made available to all attendees, who want to join in any one of the tables as an audience.
