    Call for Proposals

Handbook of Research on Strategic Leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

An edited handbook to be published by Edward Elgar Publishing

    Background

Over the past decade, the acceleration and collision of several trends are shaping the agenda of strategic leaders (CEOs, top management team members, board members, and so on). These trends include the emergence of fundamentally new technologies, digital transformation, new entrants wielding disruptive innovations, and increasingly powerful platforms. In our MBA and executive education classes, strategic leaders regale the broader challenges of coping with shifting geopolitical landscapes (e.g., the political earthquakes of Trumpism and Brexit; the growing isolation of China from western states), the demands of climate change, the rise of non-stakeholder activists, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, and the evolving nature of business ecosystems. The challenges of managing these interrelated technical, societal, and economic developments are coming into sharper focus.

    Intended Contributions

Our edited Handbook seeks to advance understanding of how strategic leaders can confront the challenges and opportunities of what some refer to as the 4th Industrial Revolution – a fusion of technologies and systems blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres (World Economic Forum, 2016). There is a pressing need to ensure research on strategic leadership is reflective of these emerging issues and is a source of thought leadership in this domain.

An Open Call for Expressions of Interest

We invite colleagues to submit a brief proposal and join the several thought leaders, educators, and practitioners who have already committed to contribute. We especially welcome contributions in the following areas, so long as there is a clear intersection with strategic leadership topics:

    • Big data and analytics
    • Machine learning and artificial intelligence
    • Digital technology, new business models, and the future of work
    • Governance and regulatory issues surrounding digital technologies
    • Wider societal issues associated with digital technologies (e.g., the DEI agenda, sustainability, the circular economy)

This list is not exhaustive; feel free to contact us with topics that fit the overall theme.

    Process

Interested authors should send a one-page proposal outlining their ideas and how they fit by Monday, November 1st 2021 to all three co-editors (listed below). For more information about the edited volume and timelines, please contact us.
