Deadline Extended - January 24th! Submit your proposal today!

    Dear ISA Friends and Colleagues,

For those of you who have been on the fence about submitting a paper or panel proposal to the ISA Conference June 3-5 in Cambridge, MA, you are in luck! We are extending the deadline to Friday, January 24th. The conference will be held at MIT's Samberg Center and this year's theme, The Work of the Future, is well aligned with the interdisciplinary nature of the ISA, drawing as it does from several different disciplines. Many of the ISA tracks - globalization, labor markets, technology management, operations and supply networks - speak directly to key topics related to technological change, the nature of work and workers. It is sure to be a rich set of presentations and discussions over the two days.

The conference will highlight regional industry strengths in both advanced manufacturing and biopharma through excursions and panels. We've also introduced several sessions specifically addressing the Work of the Future topics, including an author-meets-critic session with Mary Gray, author of Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass, as well as a plenary session with several of MIT's Work of the Future Task Force members to discuss the task forces's interim report. See more of the conference highlights here.

Please send your paper or panel proposal in the next week and join us in Cambridge.

I hope to see you in June!

    Call for Papers

Just five days to go before submissions are due for the 2020 ISA Annual conference! Please send your paper abstracts and panel proposals for our annual conference, held next year on June 3-5, 2020 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Samberg Conference Center, near Boston, MA.

Boston is known as The City of Notions, The Cradle of Liberty, The Athens of America, and America's Walking City, and Beantown - to name just a new of its nicknames. Boston has one of the healthiest and most diversified economics in the U.S., with strength in technology and innovation (e.g., robotics, artificial intelligence, etc.) that is transforming work in diverse industries such as education, health care, financial services, and manufacturing. This year's conference theme, Work of the Future, was chosen with that in mind.

Papers and panels that address the work of the future in any regard are encouraged but not required. We welcome any and all research that fits under the broad umbrella of industry studies. ISA was founded to encourage "industry studies" in which researchers pursue contextual knowledge of industry, firm, and workplace in order to inform research questions, guide data collection, motivate multi-method analysis, and stimulate interpretations that consider both generalizability and context-contingent lessons.

We hope that you will join us at next June's conference. We have several conference additions and highlights this year, which you can learn about here: https://www.industrystudies.org/conference-highlights. For many of us, it is our favorite conference - small and personal, drawing people from  many disciplines who share a passion for phenomenon-driven research and for going out into the field to speak with people, observe, and gather primary data.

Check out the call for papers for further information, it is attached to this email and can also be found on our website: https://www.industrystudies.org/call-for-papers. One great way to leverage the riches available at an ISA conference is to convene a panel whose members reflect different perspectives on a given topic or theme. The panel designs each year are varied, so feel free to be creative - look at a single question across multiple industries; compare and contrast the critical issues affecting a single industry; or find researchers united by a method who are applying it in diverse industry settings.

Please feel free to share this email with colleagues doing industry studies. Invite a friend to submit a paper or panel alongside you!

The submission deadline is Friday, January 24, 2020.
