    Dear Friends and Colleagues,

    Sorry for cross posting . . .

Following the retirement of Dr. Ruth Wagner after 5 years in the role, American University's School of Public Affairs' Master of Science in Organization Development Program seeks an experienced, energetic, and entrepreneurial leader, who is passionate about creating and educating the organizational change leaders of tomorrow to serve as Program Director.   The appointment is a non-tenure track faculty position and will commence on January 6, 2020. In addition to directing the program, the position will teach three classes during the academic year.

As it celebrates its 40th, the AU MSOD Program has transformed over 1,800 graduates from able professionals to exceptional leaders. Our graduates are business executives and non-profit managers, consultants and entrepreneurs, community activists and federal employees - each with a deeply personal perspective on success in the 21st century.

The program was created by several of the very founders of the field of OD and carries on their legacy of experiential education in a cohort-based model, with a strong focus on interpersonal interaction, use of self, social justice and diversity, and global effectiveness.  Students are supported by faculty, coaches, and facilitators in building a learning community, international consulting projects, and a rigorous and demanding practicum.

The Program Director will assess and build on the strengths of the current program, including its focus, curriculum, and structure to assure that it remains state of the art and responsive to the needs of organizations and communities. The Program Director will represent the program to external constituencies and take an active role in recruitment of students. The Program Director will also oversee the Program's personnel, operations, budget, and external communications with the support of an Assistant Director and strong staff.

We are especially interested in applicants who have had substantial experience in consulting to and managing large scale change at a high level in the private sector, non-profit, public sector, or international organizations.  The candidate should demonstrate a talent for and interest in teaching and mentoring students. We are particularly interested in practitioners who can help us develop flexible new educational programs and raise the visibility of the School. This position will require some weekend and evening hours.

You can see the announcement and the instructions to respond at:

Generally, the successful candidate will have:

    • a terminal degree in the behavioral sciences (PhD, EdD, DBA, etc)
    • at least 10 years of experience in consulting to and managing large scale change at a high level in large scale systems
    • demonstrated effectiveness as an organization development consultant in increasingly complex systems
    • demonstrated talent in teaching and mentoring students
    • up-to-date knowledge about fields adjacent to OD, including leadership, change management, strategy, organizational behavior, psychology, sociology, social psychology, etc.
    • a commitment to outreach and recruitment on an ongoing basis throughout the calendar and academic years
    • the ability to think creatively, solve problems, and invent solutions, especially around product development and program design
    • an ability to work collaboratively with students, alums, faculty, staff, etc.

Many thanks to Dr. Ruth Wagner for her years of dedicated service in this role, setting a very high standard for the program and her successors.
