Call for Abstracts: AOM Symposium on Upper Echelon Work-Family Interface

     Dear AOM Scholars,

We are putting together a presenter symposium on work-family interface of organization's upper echelon members to submit to the 79th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management <https://aom.org/annualmeeting/> in Boston, which will take place August 9-13, 2019.  We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your work for inclusion within that symposium.

    Scope of the Topic

It is going to be 35 years since Hambrick and Mason conceptualized the role of executive background characteristics on organizational outcomes, through their seminal work 'Upper Echelons Theory.' However, when it comes to executives and/or directors, there is still limited understanding on how their experiences in non-work domains (such as personal life or family) impact their work performance, strategic decisions, and other organizational outcomes. For example, when Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corp, announced that he and his wife Wendi of 14 years were filing for divorce, shares of News Corp traded 1.4 percent higher. As another example, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, and his wife Priscilla Chan pledged to use 99% of their Facebook stock, valued at around $45 billion, to further their philanthropic interests, when their daughter was born.

We are interested in understanding how members of an organization's upper echelons manage their work-family interface. How do family roles and life events present them with unique challenges and opportunities for fulfilling their work role, advancing their careers, and shaping their organizations? What mechanisms link their non-work and work roles and experiences? Do these links differ based on their social identities?

If you are interested in having your work included in this symposium submission, please send a 250-500 word abstract of that work to amitra6@uic.edu and cgp208@lehigh.edu by December 27th 2018.

The overall timeline is as follows:

    •December 27, 2018: Abstracts due to amitra6@uic.edu and cgp208@lehigh.edu

    • December 29, 2018: Abstract selection complete and notifications made

•January 3, 2019: Extended abstract due (2-5 pages of text, excluding references and up to 2 pages of appendices)
