Resilience in the Workplace: Recent Advances in Models, Methods, and Applications

    (Proposed Symposium, AOM 2019)

Conference Theme: Understanding the Inclusive Organization

Organizer: Dr. Danielle D. King (Rice University, Department of Psychological Sciences)

    Dear colleagues,

I invite you to join a presenter symposium on Resilience in the Workplace. The Conference will be held in Boston, Massachusetts on August 9-13th, 2019. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to consider your work for inclusion in this symposium.

Please follow this link for additional AOM meeting details: https://aom.org/annualmeeting/

The goal of this symposium is to facilitate the presentation and discussion of research advancements in the area of resilience (adaptive functioning despite adversity) at work. Research has recently discussed needs and opportunities in this domain (e.g., Britt et al., 2016; King et al., 2016), and this symposium seeks to bring authors and interested readers together to share how these needs are being addressed. It is the hope that this symposium will give presenters and attendees a space to share current directions, novel research insights, and updated advancements about resilience for employees and organizations.

The integrating theme of the symposium will be finalized once more information about the individual papers is gathered. Theoretical/conceptual and empirical work in this domain is welcome.

Some possible topics of particular interest include:

    • Improved operationalization of resilience at work
    • Assessment of validity in resilience measurement for employees, teams, and organizations
    • Best practices for improving resilience trainings and interventions
    • Advancements in theoretical grounding of the resilience domain
    • Longitudinal assessments of employee resilience
    • Uncovering important work-related predictors and outcomes of resilience
    • Meta-analysis of resilience research at work

In the proposed symposium, four research papers that focus on resilience in the workplace will be presented and discussed. Given the benefits of resilience in the workplace, insights will be valuable to employees, leaders, teams, and organizations.

If you are interested in joining the symposium, please email Danielle.D.King@rice.edu by November 25th indicating (1) your desired role in the symposium (i.e., presenter or discussant) and (2) an abstract of what you would like to present in the symposium (~300-500 words). The abstract should contain (a) the project title, (b) key ideas and contributions, (c) a description of the methods, data, and analyses (if appropriate).

    Symposium Timeline:

    • November 25th, 2018: Brief abstract due to Danielle King
    • December 2nd, 2018: Four abstracts chosen and authors notified
    • December 16th, 2018: Extended abstracts due to Danielle King (2-5 pages of text, excluding references and up to two pages of appendices)

I hope you will be interested in joining this session because, as in previous years, the interaction among resilience scholars will be interesting and impactful!

Thank you in advance for considering this request.

    Sincerely,
    Danielle D. King
