Symposium Abstract:
Over recent years, leadership scholars have become increasingly interested in the complex, dynamic and co-created nature of leadership. This new stream of research sees leadership as a collective achievement that is brought about by all participants of the leadership process. However, because it is not easy to translate a collective lens into adequate research methods and theories, a number of diverse research efforts are present in collective leadership studies today such as collective, shared, distributed, relational, complexity, social network <g class="gr_ gr_62 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="62" data-gr-id="62">and</g> discursive leadership. While all of these different approaches see leadership as something that is brought about by the collective itself, how they conceptualize and study the collective nature of leadership varies deeply. As a result, there is contention about the true meaning of collective leadership. The aim of this symposium is to explore the complex, dynamic and co-created nature of collective leadership by bringing together five presentations that shed light on the phenomenon from different lenses to highlight theoretical, meta-theoretical and methodological differences and connections between the various collective leadership approaches.
