Tensions, contradictions, paradoxes, and conflicts are an inevitable part of human and organizational life (Jehn & Mannix, 2001; Lewis, 2000; Tetlock, Peterson, & Lerner, 1996). In recent years, the rapid growth and increased complexity of organizations has not only compounded the number of tensions but also made them more salient. A recent review article of the literature by paradox experts recommended that management researchers examine individual approaches to tensions, as the topic remains heavily under-researched (Schad, Lewis, Raisch, & Smith, 2016). This presenter symposium is an attempt to generate discussion and encourage research on this topic. It includes 6 research papers that cut across levels of analysis and methods from scholars across the globe–Australia, Canada, China, and U.S.–and an expert discussant, Marianne Lewis, who has spent her career studying tensions and is one of the authors of the recent review article cited. By enriching our understanding of tensions at the individual level, this symposium contributes to a larger goal–and theme of this AOM conference–of helping people live better lives. An Integrated Model of Dynamic Problem Solving within Organizational Constraints Presenter: Johnathan Cromwell, U. of San Francisco Presenter: Teresa M Amabile, Harvard U.
