National Competitiveness Research 2023: Emerging Technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Institute for Policy and Strategy on National Competitiveness (IPSNC, ipsncr.org) has been publishing the National Competitiveness Research (NCR) annually since 2001. The IPSNC developed a new theoretical model on national competitiveness and operationalized the model by measuring the indices for more than sixty countries and regions around the world. Based upon these findings, the report also provides policy recommendations for governments to enhance national/regional competitiveness and business implications for companies to formulate effective strategies.

Since 2021, the NCR has been published annually by World Scientific Publishing based in Singapore. We have selected a special topic each year for the serial publication, and the topic for 2023 is emerging technologies and their relevance to corporate and national competitiveness. The discussion on the digitalization of business began as early as the 1990s, but the emerging technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing have only been a recent trend. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of emerging technologies by both firms and countries. Yet, despite the growing importance of emerging technologies, firms and governments seem to be lagging in effectively integrating them into their operations.

To address these future challenges, this book will address how emerging technologies have affected firms, industries, and countries. It also welcomes discussion on how firms and countries are responding to the changing environment to enhance their competitiveness through these new technologies. In this regard, we invite manuscripts either theory-building papers or empirical studies.

The following are some suggested topics:

    • Opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies toward corporate and national development.
    • Emerging technologies as a driver for entrepreneurship and competitiveness.
    • The changing paradigm of the competitiveness of firms and countries due to emerging technologies.
    • Corporate strategy and government policy in response to emerging technologies.
    • Emerging technologies and the development of new business and industries.
    • Determinant factors of effective adoption and integration of emerging technologies.
    • Emerging technologies and social and environmental development.
