Abstract: This paper explores the impact of institutions on the propensity of different social groups to enter entrepreneurship. We propose that while formal regulatory changes may lower the barriers to entrepreneurship, informal institutions shape the impact these changes have on entry among different social groups. Using an exogenous reduction in entry barriers in Mexico, we find the institutional logic of patriarchy can hinder the impact of formal regulative changes on increasing rates of female entrepreneurship, instead leading women to become unpaid family laborers or wage workers to support family members' newly founded firms. Our study contributes to the relationship between institutions and entrepreneurship and highlights the need to consider both formal and informal institutions in efforts to address the gender gap in entrepreneurship.
