    Hello All

The OB group at Cal State Fullerton is considering creating a minor in leadership for business as well as non-business students. I am interested in knowing if you are aware of other universities or colleges that offer a leadership minor in a business school. If so, I am interested in knowing what courses are offered as part of the minor.

Additionally, if anyone is willing to share any syllabi of different leadership courses that they are teaching, that would be helpful. We will need to offer four courses. We currently offer two (Managerial Leadership and Team Leadership Skills), and are currently in discussion what other leadership classes we should offer so that we don't have too much overlap across courses.

Feel free to reply to the list-serv, or contact me directly at rgottfredson@fullerton.edu.

    Thank you!

We just started this AY and have over a dozen students enrolled already (this is a lot for our population). We are adding another track for Rural and Native Leadership and Civic Engagement

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Cheers,

    Greetings!

We recently developed a leadership minor in the College of Business designed to appeal to all undergraduate students, regardless of major or course of study.

Basically, we developed 2 new leadership courses (see attached syllabi) and utilized existing courses to fill out the required 18 hours for the minor.

Required Courses (all junior and senior level courses):

    1.       Introduction to Leadership and Leadership Development

    2.       Advanced Leadership Theory and Research

    3.       Principles of Management

    4.       Negotiation

And 2 courses from the following (all jr & sr level):

    1.       Human Resource Management

    2.       Small Business Management/Entrepreneurship

    3.       Critical Thinking and Decision Making

    4.       Personal Selling

    5.       Sales Management

Part of the reason to use existing courses was to entice business majors to add the minor to their course of study and to provide a broad business foundation for students outside the College of Business.

  • 4.  Leadership Minor & Courses

    Posted 02-08-2015 11:22
    Colleagues,

SUNY Fredonia has a leadership program that is run under the Student Affairs Division as an interdisciplinary minor program.  That placement has allowed multiple majors to participate.   I work closely with the program in fact doing research with the director on how experiential learning impacts success after graduation.   Link to program

Here's the details of the Leadership Minor

The goals of the Leadership Studies Minor are:

    • To introduce leadership as a recognized and well-documented set of concepts and ideas gleaned from designated courses that enhance leadership concepts;
    • To provide the opportunity for an internship experience that documents appropriate leadership skills;
    • To allow students to use this minor to complement a variety of major programs, including but not limited to, Business Administration, Communication, Social Work, or Education; and
    • To offer a substantial menu of educational opportunities in an effort to enhance student potential as active and progressive individuals in a variety of diverse and competitive professional settings.
    •

    Requirements for consideration:

Undergraduate student enrolled at SUNY Fredonia

Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5

Consultation (and approval) with current Academic Advisor

Application and consultation with Leadership Minor Coordinator

    Affiliated Student Organizations and Activities:

The Leadership Corps provides opportunities for students to program special events, develop leadership competencies, and enhance presentations skills by facilitating workshops for campus and community organizations.  Examples of this are Resident Assistant training from several college campuses on our ropes course at the College Lodge, Myers-Briggs Type Inventory presentations, and etiquette dinners.

The Leadership Awards Reception (co-sponsored by Leadership Corps, Campus Life, Faculty Student Association, and University Advancement) provides an opportunity for recognition of our student leaders on campus, while allowing a reception for several scholarship announcements.

The Leadership Minor would also provide students with hand-on experience in the New York Leadership Educator's Consortium (NYLEC).  A yearly conference is planned in the summer to provide students and professionals in the field of leadership development an opportunity to learn new theories and present on current trends.

    Requirements for the Minor:

Completion of the minor requires a minimum of 21 credit hours.   Coursework focuses on five basic components: theory of leadership development; leadership in a changing world; communication skills (oral and written); techniques for working with groups and organizations; and presentation skills.  The minor includes a required internship, scheduled in consultation with the Minor coordinator.

    Core (6 Credits):

LEAD 201       Advanced Leadership Development                                                    3

LEAD 490       Internship in Leadership Development                                                            3

    Electives (15 Credits):

Must cover at least three of the following areas.  At least six (6) of these credits must be at the 300-400 level, and no more than three (3) of these credits may be from any one discipline.  Note that many of these courses have prerequisites, but often the prerequisite is a course that could be taken to satisfy a requirement in the College Core Curriculum.

    Dear Ryan:

You may want to check International Leadership Association's website for copies of sylabus? I am not sure is membership is required.

Here is the link that will take you directly to the sylabus. Hope these are helpful.

I am co-supervising an honors student who is conducting a systematic review of qualitative studies -- published or unpublished -- that have examined relations between leaders' behavior and employee well-being or work attitudes. If you have or know of relevant studies, we would appreciate learning about them. Please send information to elliot.ince@gmail.com or bjelley@upei.ca.

    Hi,

Here is the syllabus for the leadership class that I am teaching.

REQUIRED READINGS:Effective Leadership: Theories, Cases, and Applications, (2013), by Ronald H. Humphrey. SAGE Publications. ISBN: 978-1-4129-6355-8.  Amazon.com currently offers a digital edition for only 2.99 if you also buy the paperback version ($69.38) from them in case you want both a hard copy and a digital version. The digital version costs $64.80 by itself.

Student website for the book: www.sagepub.com/humphreyel

When you go to the website pick your region of the world-North America-and then create an account that will let you access the textbook supplements (I'm not sure if you actually need to create an account to access the resources). The supplements includes free articles you can read to learn more about a topic, learning goals, web resources including numerous videos of the leaders featured in the book, and other items. You will not be tested over these web resource items unless specifically told to study them for the test. To see the web resources, click on the Chapter Resources link, and then click on the chapter title to see the materials for that chapter.

EXAMS: The 3 multiple choice exams will cover material from both the readings and the class lectures.  Exams usually have 40 questions and last about 40 minutes.  Closed-book test: No lecture notes or books may be used during the test.

TERM PAPER: The term paper will consist of a case study based on a case passed out in class.  See the attached instructions for details on how to write the paper.

GROUP PRESENTATION: Groups of 5-6 people will make presentations to the class on a topic that they have researched.  See attached.  We will form presentation groups during week 2.

GRADES: Course grades will be assigned as follows:

         Exams ..................  20% each

         Paper ..................  20

         Presentation ...........  20

    A = 87.000% and above; B = 75 to 86.999; C = 65-74.999; D = 55 to 64.999; F = below 55.000. Absolutely no rounding up.

Bonus: up to 3 bonus points for self-assessment papers handed in. These bonus points are added to your final course average, so with 3 bonus points you would need an 84% average for an A (84 + 3 = 87.00 for the final course average), a 72 for a B, 62 for a C, and 52 for a D. You get one point for each bonus self-assessment paper handed in (up to a maximum of 3). Each self-assessment paper should (1) tell me which assessment you did from the student textbook website, including chapter and link to the assessment; (2) tell me what you learned about yourself from the self-assessment, and (3) discuss how you can build upon your strengths and improve your weaknesses. You do not have to tell me your actual scores (some people may have high scores even for their weaknesses so saying you want to improve does not mean you are not building on a strength or that you are terribly poor at your weakness), and please do not feel that you have to disclose anything that you regard as too personal. Each paper should be one page long. The papers should be handed in during exam days-do not email me them or hand them in at other times. One bonus paper is allowed for each exam and should be from the chapters covered during that exam.

    Take care,

    Ron

Here is information on the University of Tampa's leadership minor.
The interdisciplinary Minor in Leadership Studies is coordinated by the TECO Center for Leadership and is designed for students who want to further develop leadership competencies and skills. Students complete three required Leadership courses and then choose three Leadership electives from an approved list. In conjunction with their coursework and in consultation with their leadership advisor, students complete a number of experiential activities (90 hours minimum). They document and reflect on these experiences in a leadership portfolio which is evaluated at the end of each semester.

Students apply on a rolling basis for acceptance to the program beginning the following fall term. Upon acceptance, students enroll in the UT Co-Curricular Transcript program and will be assigned a leadership advisor who will guide them through the program.

    Application

To be a candidate for the Leadership Studies minor you must first complete the online application and be approved by members of the Leadership Resource Team.

    Program Requirements

    • Must maintain 2.5 GPA in all courses for Leadership Studies minor.
    • Take courses in the following:

    A = 87.000% and above; B = 75 to 86.999; C = 65-74.999; D = 55 to 64.999; F = below 55.000. Absolutely no rounding up.

Hi Ryan,

It's not minor but we have a program here at TCU that is similar to what you're seeking. I'm posting a detailed reply on behalf of the academic director of our BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program, Dr. Greg Stephens:

    _____________________________________________________________________

Here in the Neeley School at TCU we have developed a three year undergraduate leadership program, now recruiting it’s tenth student cohort. It is called the BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program (http://www.neeley.tcu.edu/leader/), and it draws students from all over the business school. Though it is not considered an academic minor, graduating students receive the designation of “Emphasis in Leadership Studies” alongside whatever business major they have pursued. The program includes both curricular (five course) and co-curricular elements.

The sequence of coursework follows a model of leading self, leading others, and leading the organization. The sequence begins with a course titled “Foundations in Leadership,” followed in sequence by “Interpersonal Leadership Skills,” “Team Leadership Skills,” “The Leadership Challenge,” and a fifth course (currently in development) which will be offered as a capstone course for the first time in Fall 2015. That fifth course resulted as we transitioned a couple of years ago from a two year to a three year program. We have had terrific success with the program, which selectively admits about 30 students each year.

We would be happy to share syllabi from the courses with you, as well as information about the co-curricular elements of the program. My email is g.stephens@tcu.edu.
