    Posted 03-23-2011 10:35

    Dear Colleagues,

I'm revising a course I've taught to MBAs in the past and will teach in a few months in our executive MBA program.  The course spans OB and HR topics, including motivation; reward systems; performance appraisal; selection; interpersonal dynamics and difficult conversations; stereotyping; group norms, dynamics, and effectiveness; organizational culture; and organizational change.  So, it's a broad sweep.

I'd love to get your recommendations regarding things that have worked really well for you when you've taught any of these topics to an MBA or executive MBA audience.  If you send your suggestions to me personally, I will compile them and send them back to the list (kleink@wharton.upenn.edu).  Here are some of the things I'm most interested in:

    ·         Readings on any of the topics listed above that are short, pithy (and therefore engaging to MBA students), and consistent with research evidence and our dominant theories.  (Finding readings in this sweet spot has been a challenge.)

    ·         Exercises or cases that bring home key messages regarding employee selection (e.g., the selection methods/approaches that are most vs. least valid)

    ·         Other exercises or cases that are your all-time favorites on any of the topics above

    ·         Video or movie clips that enhance student engagement, discussion, and learning

    ·         Company examples that help bring home key teaching points (for example, I find that talking about Netflix is helpful re: compensation and culture: http://www.slideshare.net/reed2001/culture-1798664)

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions,

    Katherine

    Katherine –

I enjoy using clips from an old comedy movie, "Gung Ho."  It can be used for addressing diversity in organizations, conflict, motivation, perception, and goal congruence...plus it's a lot of fun.

    Dear Katherine

    Please consider this edited reference:

Locke, E. (Ed.) (2009). Handbook of principles of organizational behavior: Indispensable knowledge for evidence-based management (Second Edition). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley.

I have found it to be right on target as the chapters are short, comprehensive reviews of the most important OB and HR topics by well recognized scholars in each area, followed by case studies that are also short but engaging for MBA students, and ending with numerous excellent references for those who want more on the topic. The link below is for the book on Amazon, where you can access the table of contents and part of the first chapter.
