    University of Illinois at Chicago

Department of Managerial Studies (Macro: Social Issues in Management)

Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Scholar

    Description

    Position Overview

The Managerial Studies department at UIC's College of Business Administration seeks an outstanding meso or macro social issues scholar (broadly defined) for a Bridge to Faculty (B2F) Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The goal of B2F is to recruit, mentor, and support the transition of an outstanding candidate from a two-year postdoctoral appointment (second year subject to satisfactory performance and University approval) to a research-active, tenure-track faculty position.  Successful postdocs in the Bridge to Faculty program may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2025-2026 academic year.  In addition to relationships within Managerial Studies and the College of Business, the B2F Postdoctoral Research Associate will participate in a cohort-based mentoring experience through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement, where they will have the opportunity to network with other Bridge to Faculty Scholars from among some of UIC's 16 colleges.  This is a full-time position with highly competitive salary and benefits.

As an embodiment of UIC's commitment to diversity, it introduced the Bridge to Faculty Scholars program to enhance diversity among its permanent faculty by encouraging the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from groups that have been historically underrepresented in their fields or departments (broadly conceived).  UIC strongly encourages applications from individuals who have demonstrated a background and/or record of scholarship that will best support UIC's diverse student body.  More information on the B2F program can be found at https://diversity.uic.edu/faculty/bridge-to-faculty/.

UIC, UIC Business, and the Macro Managerial Studies Group:

Located adjacent to downtown Chicago and just minutes from Lake Michigan, UIC is among the nation's preeminent urban public research universities.  It is a Research-1 university with state-of-the-art research facilities.  Serving over 34,000 students and with nearly 260,000 alumni, it is the largest university in Chicago.  It is also distinguished as one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation and is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPSI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).  As such, UIC deservingly prides itself on its mission of "providing access to excellence."  By emphasizing cutting-edge and transformational research along with a commitment to the success of all students, UIC embodies the dynamic, vibrant and engaged urban university.  Recent "Best Colleges" rankings published by U.S. News & World Report place UIC among the top public schools in the nation.

UIC Business is the largest provider of undergraduate business education in Chicago.  Our undergraduate business program has been ranked #1 in Chicago by U.S. News.  We also have full-time, flexible, and online MBA programs as well as five Ph.D. programs (Accounting, Business Statistics, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Organizational Behavior/Human Resources).  UIC Business is AACSB accredited with more than 4,500 students.  For additional information, please visit our website at http://business.uic.edu/.

The Managerial Studies Department consists of three research-oriented faculty groups: Macro (Strategy/Organization Theory), Micro (Organizational Behavior and Human Resources), and Entrepreneurship.  The B2F position is affiliated primarily with the Macro group, though opportunities to collaborate with other faculty are also welcome.  Faculty in the Macro group include Shelley Brickson, Conor Callahan, Felipe Calvano, Jocelyn Leitzinger, Livia Markoczy (joining in 2023), Anthony Pagano, Susan Perkins, Steve Sauerwald, Mark Shanley, and Mary Beth Watson-Manheim (Department Head).  Our group has published in Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, and Journal of Management, among other high-quality journals.  In 2021, we ranked #29 (out of 150 US public business schools) in terms of research productivity on the TAMUGA Ranking of Management Departments.

    Research Areas:
We particularly seek candidates whose research addresses social issues / social impact / social value, broadly conceived, in some fashion.  Examples include, but not limited to: corporate citizenship, sustainability, ethics, stakeholder management, social value creation, demographic composition of boards and senior management, social movements (e.g., Black Lives Matter), etc.  We hope that the B2F scholar will help move us toward our long-term goal of building research and teaching capability in this domain.

    Responsibilities:
This position is focused on research activities, with the goals of facilitating the scholar's ability to publish research and generate a detailed research plan.  Teaching duties will be kept to a minimum (2 classes over a 2-year period, typically catered to the scholar's interests), and the B2F Scholar will be exempt from service in order to allow the candidate to develop an independent research program.  In addition, B2F Scholars will participate in a cohort-based mentoring and networking experience through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement.

    To Apply:

Applications should submit the following materials and attachments to the UIC Job Board: https://uic.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/1/home/requisition/3021?c=uic
