Special Issue of Research in Ethical Issues in Organizations (REIO)
Ethics in the Global South
Editors:
Michael Schwartz, RMIT, Melbourne
Howard Harris, University of South Australia
Developments in the Global South have raised ethical question in business, in human development, economics and the environment. Practitioners and academics working in the countries of the Global South and in other southern hemisphere countries have contributed to debates about ethical issues in organizations. This volume is conceived as an opportunity to showcase, in an international series, that work.
The influence of the Global South is increasing in the conduct and governance of multinationals, in the growing interest in the 'bottom of the pyramid', in the debates over the environment, trade and international law. There are questions aplenty. Does the First World understand? Some answer with a resounding, No. 'Missing from much current mainstream policy, media and academic debate is acknowledgement of the diversity of the global middle classes and an understanding of how ethical interpretations and behaviour differ in various consumer markets around the world' (McEwan, Hughes & Bek 2015). The 'complexities and tensions faced during fieldwork' are sufficient to have given rise to a handbook (Lunn 2014).
Definitions of the Global South vary. We do not intend to be restrictive. The whole southern hemisphere is included in our scope and the less developed and developing countries of the northern hemisphere. The volume will have two sections, the first about the Global South and the second from the South. The second section will seek to showcase recent work in applied ethics from writers in the South, whether or not the topic is directly related to the Global South.
The contributions to the first part of the volume, dealing with ethical issues in the Global South should address one or more of the following topics, although the list is by no means exhaustive:
.. Impact of differing values and beliefs on recruitment and other aspects of human resource management
.. Ethics of research in developing and less developed regions
.. Responsibility along the supply chain
.. How well do the guidelines developed in the West for international business fit when the home country, or both home and host countries, are in the South or East
.. The role of consumer and social media protest in changing organizational behavior
.. Different approaches to gift and friendship
.. The impact of social and religious conventions and beliefs, such as those regarding death, on management
.. Understanding that there are significantly different conceptions of what is good
.. What do we owe people? How does the past, perhaps the colonial past or some repressive regime, affect the obligation of those doing business or providing services today.
.. The role of international agencies
