Background to the Special Issue
Businesses are increasingly being challenged by societal actors to explain, justify or change their behavior with respect to their role in creating, maintaining and/or ignoring societal challenges such as climate change, human rights issues, income inequality, environmental degradation and poverty. Business & Society (B&S) researchers are tasked to examine these issues and this, more often than not, necessitates strong qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies to explore the complex questions that arise. Unlike other fields such as finance where data may be more readily available, B&S researchers frequently need to collect their own data (qualitative and quantitative) from multiple sources, develop new metrics to measure social activity or performance, and unravel the deeper level meaning of social initiatives by business. B&S issues also differ from much management research in that they inevitably deal with a multiplicity of indicators and interpretations.
To date B&S research has struggled to meet these methodological challenges. This special issue encourages B&S researchers to advance our understanding of existing and more novel methods and methodologies so that we can deal better with the qualitative and quantitative conundrums we face. Examples include: consideration of whether complex multi-dimensional constructs such as CSR and social impact should be operationalized empirically, and if so, how; what tools can we use to convincingly interpret the variety of meanings of social responsibility that may arise across stakeholders, countries and contexts; how to deal with social desirability bias, selection bias, and endogeneity issues in B&S measures; how to effectively use social media data to empirically analyze stakeholder expectations of social performance; when and how best to use mixed methods techniques to address complex social responsibility phenomena; how to incorporate historical analysis into B&S research; and how best to uncover latent, marginalized or unspoken voices and perspectives in B&S research.
Types of Submissions Solicited
With this call for papers we therefore seek to expand our knowledge of methods and methodologies by encouraging B&S scholars to:
• critically categorize, analyze and evaluate the methodologies in the existing B&S literature;
• identify and problematize methodological challenges specific to research in the B&S field;
• highlight methodological challenges currently overlooked in B&S research;
• apply new methods and methodologies from other disciplines to B&S research;
• develop new methods and methodologies for B&S research;
• provide a showcase for excellent examples of quantitative and qualitative research design in B&S research;
Two types of papers will be considered for publication in the special issue: (i) Full Papers addressing any aspect of B&S method and methodologies (approx. 40 pages); (ii) shorter length Research Notes that deal with a specific technical issue or problem in a B&S method.
SUBMISSION PROCESS AND DEADLINES
Authors should submit their manuscripts through ScholarOne Manuscripts by July 1, 2015 to
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bas. Manuscripts should be prepared following the Business and Society author guidelines:
http://www.sagepub.com/journals/Journal200878/manuscriptSubmission.
The editors welcome informal enquiries related to the proposed topics.
All articles will be double-blind peer reviewed by at least three anonymous referees.
Special Issue Workshop:
To help authors prepare their manuscripts for submission, a Special Issue Workshop will be held at the 2015 IABS Conference in Costa Rica to be held in March 2015 (final date TBC). Authors are invited to present and discuss their papers during the workshop. Presentation at the workshop does not guarantee acceptance of the paper for publication in Business and Society.
To be considered for the workshop, please send your working paper to the BAS Editors at
BASeditors@schulich.yorku.ca by December 5, 2014. Submission of a paper to the workshop is not a precondition for submission to the Special Issue.
