Sustainability Research in Latin America
Date: Saturday, July 26, 2025
Time: 15:00 – 17:30 CEST
Session Type: Professional Development Workshop (PDW). See details @AOM
Orientation: International, Research,
Summary:
Global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequities have intensified in recent decades. Firms play a critical role in advancing Sustainable Development, and research on Sustainability Management has expanded. However, much of this work focuses on developed markets in the Global North. As a result, perspectives from the Global South, particularly Latin America, remain underrepresented, leading to a limited recognition of locally developed management practices and insights. Latin America’s distinct context—characterized by rich biodiversity, natural resources, political instability, weak institutions, family-controlled firms, and economic volatility—offers valuable lessons in addressing sustainability challenges. In a context where the management field struggles with getting effective answers to great challenges and wicked problems, Latin America remains understudied despite its potential. Given the significance of the matter and the demand for scholarly development in the field, this PDW brings together leading scholars advancing understanding of sustainability in the region. Panelists will share insights across areas such as circular economy, regenerative systems, biodiversity, education, and sustainable development goals. The session will engage participants in critical discussions around two central questions: (a) How are Latin American organizations tackling sustainability challenges, and how do their approaches compare globally? (b) What research opportunities are most promising, and how can scholars effectively pursue them? By bridging diverse perspectives, this PDW aims to amplify Latin America’s role in sustainable business discourse and inspire future research that reflects the region’s significance and potential.
