    Sloan School of Management
100 Main Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02142

Post-Doctoral Position in Work and Organization Studies

We are pleased to announce plans to award up to two two-year postdoctoral fellowships in the Work and Organizations Studies (WOS) group at MIT Sloan. Ideal candidates will have recently completed a PhD—or be near completion—with a research agenda relevant to management. Degrees may be in psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, organizational theory, or related social science and management fields.

The fellowships provide an opportunity to continue research within the WOS intellectual community. WOS faculty employ a range of approaches, including quantitative and computational methods, ethnography, and field- and lab-based research. Interdisciplinary exchange is central to our work, and our collaborations frequently extend to partners in corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors.

Each fellow is paired with at least one faculty mentor. While collaboration is not required, it is strongly encouraged and readily available. Fellows who engage deeply with the community tend to benefit most. Preference will be given to applicants who can articulate how they would leverage WOS’s intellectual environment.

In addition to research, fellows are expected to participate in workshops and seminars and to mentor our Predoctoral Associates. Fellows will also teach one section of an undergraduate course at the intersection of organizations and communication. The course develops students’ understanding of organizational dynamics and their ability to navigate social networks, work in teams, interpret incentives, leverage collective intelligence, manage change, and make sound decisions. Laboratory sessions, led by TAs and writing faculty, provide structured practice in written, oral, and visual communication.

These fellowships are intended to broaden access to research careers. We therefore encourage applications from individuals with unconventional research trajectories. “Unconventional” includes scholars transitioning from outside the traditional business school context or those whose backgrounds differ from conventional academic pathways.

We recognize that such trajectories often involve overcoming meaningful obstacles. In 250 words or less, please describe a specific obstacle you faced, including what you hoped to achieve, what stood in your way, how you addressed it, and what you learned. This statement may be included in your cover letter or submitted as a supplemental document.

Please submit applications electronically at https://apply.interfolio.com/183473 providing a current CV, research and teaching statements, two papers that indicate your research focus and capabilities, and two letters of recommendation.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Questions should be directed to Virginia Geiger at vgeiger@mit.edu.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an equal employment opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin.

Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check, including verifying any finding of misconduct (or pending investigation) from prior employers.

    Posted yesterday
    Dear Virginia,

Thank you for sharing this opportunity. I recently visited MIT following the Global Flourishing Summit at Harvard, and I found that the institution's environment truly resonated with my work and aspirations.

Before I submit my application, I would like to ask a few questions regarding the postdoctoral fellowship, as my background is non-traditional. My research focuses on transformation, systems change, and human flourishing within global corporations. Specifically, my PhD work involved developing a learning model for women in Latin American corporate settings to adopt flourishing as a measure of success. I am currently based in Panama, where I run a consulting firm that applies this research with corporate clients.

Given my background and current situation, could you please clarify the following:

    - Residency Requirements: Is the postdoctoral position fully in-person? I am currently based in Panama and balance my work with family (3 kids in ES/MD/HS) commitments.
    - Citizenship: I hold Argentinian and Italian citizenship. Does this impact eligibility for the fellowship?
    - Research Methodology: My intention is to conduct action research, remaining deeply immersed in the corporate communities I serve. Is this approach aligned with the expectations of the WOS group?
    - Interdisciplinary Fit: I hold an MS in Industrial Engineering and previously served as a TA in System Dynamics. I am eager to apply these systemic optimization principles to the science of human flourishing.

I appreciate your time and look forward to your guidance on whether my profile and research goals align with this position.

    Best regards,

    Denise Dziwak
