    Conference Announcement and Call for Papers The First Annual Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (SEE) Conference Thursday-Friday, April 12-13, 2012 University of Denver, Denver CO Conference Website: http://biz.colostate.edu/seeConference

    Abstracts submission deadline: 20 January 2012

    Keynote Speakers

    Sankaran Venkataraman, MasterCard Professor of Business Administration; Research Director, The Batten Institute, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia Jay Barney, Chase Chair for Excellence in Corporate Strategy and Professor of Management & Human Resources; Fisher College of Business, Ohio State University Tom Dean, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Enterprise, Colorado State University Jim O'Toole, Daniels Distinguished Chair of Business Ethics, University of Denver The First Annual Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (SEE) conference invites scholars in sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship to share research and knowledge, and to create an academic community. Building on the vibrant cohort of scholars in ethics, entrepreneurship, and sustainability around the Rockies' Front Range, the SEE Conference will enable local, national, and international researchers to drive the development of these increasingly important and rapidly changing areas of study.

    Sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship draw on knowledge from diverse, but converging streams of research. These include but are not limited to studies on sustainability, social entrepreneurship, business ethics, firm-community ties, and environment impacts, to name a few. The fact that ethics and sustainability are intertwined with the concept of entrepreneurship is no longer new. Indeed, many argue that ethical choices are a fundamental aspect of any business activity, and critical to sustained success of startups, small firms, medium enterprises, and large, multinational corporations. Some even suggest that the focus on sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship triangulates every economic opportunity. The goal of the conference is to advance the accumulation of knowledge about SEE-related topics.

    We invite participants to submit abstracts (2-3 page) that address a broad array of subjects on the topics of sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship (SEE). These abstracts will be reviewed by our Advisory Board. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following areas:

    · Definitional and conceptual understandings of sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship

    · Conceptual models and empirical analysis of the antecedents, consequences, and contingencies associated with the processes of sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship.

    · The role of ethical behavior in the growth, survival, and performance of entrepreneurial ventures.

    · Antecedents and consequences of unethical behavior in entrepreneurial ventures.

    · The nature and dimensions of ethical behavior in the entrepreneurial firm.

    · The role of economic and institutional systems in motivating ethical and sustainable behaviors.

    · Divergences between economic incentive systems and entrepreneurial action.

    · The interplay between ethics, sustainability, economic institutions, and entrepreneurial opportunity.

    · Examination of productive and unproductive entrepreneurship.

    · Value creation in sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship.

    Participants of the SEE conference can expect to:

    · Share cutting-edge research, ideas and theories.

    · Foster collaborative research efforts.

    · Build a worldwide network of scholars who advance the state of knowledge about SEE.

    The conference will start with a reception, dinner, and keynote speaker on Thursday, April 12.

    On Friday, April 13, there will be a full day of presentations, and three more keynote speakers (breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks will be provided). There is no registration fee, but we invite participants to commit and attend the entire event, which will end with a dinner and a keynote speaker (~8:30 pm).

    Hello,

    South Asian Journal of Global Business Research (SAJGBR) is looking for papers for a Special Issue on Base of the Pyramid. Please see additional information below.

    My apologies for any cross-postings.

    Best regards,

    Candice

     Call for Papers- Special Issue of the South Asian Journal of Global Business Research

    Fortune at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) Revisited

    Bottom (base) of the Pyramid concept has a long history. The term was first coined by the US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in a radio address in 1932. However the concept was popularized in the business literature by C.K. Prahalad much more recently. Since then, study of BoP has captured attention of practitioners and scholars alike (Gollakota, Gupta, and Bork, 2010, Karamchandani, Kubzansky and Lalwani, 2011; Olsen and Boxenbaum, 2009); and four approaches have emerged for strategizing about the BoP.

    Fortune Finding: Prahalad and Hamel (1990) underlined the scale of the world population not included in the global markets, and the potential of fortune-finding by catering to the common needs of this poorest population, by providing low-cost products and extending distribution reach.

    Fortune Creating: London and Hart (2011) postulate that the next generation of BoP business strategies require a shift to "fortune creating" with the four billion consumers, producers, and entrepreneurs who make up the poorest population of the world, so that viable and scale ventures may be designed.

    Fortune Sharing:  Some social entrepreneurship scholars based in the industrialized markets contend the need for the corporations to approach the BoP with a corporate social responsibility mindset, and commit to sharing their wealth with the BoP, rather than seeking to create wealth off or through the BoP (Berkman, 2010; Davidson, 2009).

    Fortune Stealing: Some social activists based in the emerging markets maintain that the multinational corporations have been all too enthusiastic to take off with the technological fortune that belongs to the communities in which the poor people have lived for generations, without giving any credit or compensation (for example, see Shiva, 2011).

    Besides understanding and contrasting these approaches, there is also a need to re-examine the concept of the Base of the Pyramid.  While in economic terms, the world's low-income communities may be at the Base of the Pyramid, in human terms, many low-income communities are known for their hospitality and helping spirit and thus perhaps could be at the Top of the Pyramid (Gupta, 2011; Leisinger, 2007; Rashid and Rahman, 2009). In the informal economy of these communities, the concrete local social context of the humans may matter more than the abstract global economic context of the corporations. Thus, as we democratize and decentralize the discourse by giving voice to the "BoP" communities that have been disconnected from the mainstream global markets, there may be a need to reframe our language.

    We propose the concept of Extensional Technological Growth (ETG) as a heuristic for strategies involving the disconnected communities.  We observe that a flip side of the weak linkages of the low-income communities with the global markets has been the preservation of the uniqueness of the technological base of the people in these communities (Gupta, 2008). This people's technological base is generally locally efficient, relying on the complementarity of the locally available and distributed resources (Cooke, 2006). In several nations, efforts are beginning to be made to connect alternative and diverse technological bases across multiple community groups and construct innovative, scalable, and disproportionately proficient technological base (Gupta, 2011). These efforts have a potential to generate extensional technological growth (ETG), connecting beyond the mainstream boundaries and channels for augmenting technological capabilities.

    Issues related to disconnected communities are particularly relevant for emerging economies of South Asia[1], where 25% of the population currently lives under poverty levels. As South Asia is estimated to provide 30-32% of the increment to the world population into 2050 (World Bank, 2011), as per the traditional understanding of BoP, there is going to be even a greater expansion of the BoP in the region (Khilji, 2011). For the special issue of the South Asian Journal of Global Business Research, we invite papers situated in or inspired by the South Asian context, and that explore theoretical and empirical aspects of topics such as:

    1)           Could there be alternative approaches to BoP as popularized by Prahalad? What would the theoretical and practical underpinnings of these approaches?

    2)           Is economic wealth really the right perspective to define the base in the BoP? What other perspectives could be used?

    3)           How do we engage these disconnected and forgotten communities and what can we learn from them? What approaches, strategies and practices are emerging from these communities that would further our understanding of leadership, management, innovation etc.?

    4)           Can social learning and critical theory (and other theories) be used to explain possible strengths of the BoP?

    5)           How to improve the ETG ecosystem- nonprofits forming alliances with business vs. nonprofits as mediators between business and people groups;

    6)           How to develop the ETG market – seeding and base-building for marketing to the BoP vs. manufacturing for low cost in the BoP vs. pursing ETG with the BoP;

    7)           How to leverage the ETG for global markets – green leap of small footprint innovations designed for the BoP vs. buyback of green solutions designed using ETG know-how for the global markets;

    8)           How to account for the ETG -- corporate social charity given to the BoP (cost-center) vs. sustainable distributed gain sharing with those contributing to ETG (profit center);

    9)           How to fund the ETG business ventures – philanthro-captialists offering patient capital to the central actors vs. microcredit federations offering fast circulation capital to decentralized actors;

    10)       Two sides of the ETG entrepreneurship – promoting consumption through marketing initiatives vs. promoting investment through multiplex linkages in the low-income communities

    11)        How to design the ETG ventures – for economies of scale through connectivity with the global economic context vs. for economies of choice through sensitivity to the local social context.

    We are hoping to use a new lens on the BoP in order to allow us to be more creative and think differently, hence we encourage submissions beyond these questions, as long as these contribute to advancing research, policy and practice related to BoP and ETG. We welcome submission from all business or related disciplines, and are open to multi-disciplinary approaches.

    CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS

    Proposal Submission Deadline: December 10, 2011 Extreme Leadership: Leaders, Teams and Situations Outside the Norm A book edited by Dr. Cristina M. Giannantonio and Dr. Amy E. Hurley-Hanson Chapman University Orange, CA USA

    INTRODUCTION

                While much is known about leaders and teams in traditional business settings, much less is known about the behaviors and processes of leaders and teams facing extreme situations.  An extreme situation is defined as one that falls outside the norm; that is, the situation falls outside the scope of daily experience (Giannantonio & Hurley-Hanson, 2011).  There are numerous historic and contemporary examples of leaders and teams that have survived extreme situations in both business and nonbusiness settings.  Business examples include the exponential growth of Apple and Facebook in the midst of the current challenging economic environment. Historic examples include Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition, while more recent examples include the first responders to the events of 9/11 and the 2010 Chilean mine disaster and rescue effort.  Companies are facing global and economic environments that fall well beyond the scope of their daily experience. One way to contribute to management practice is to better understand leaders and teams that exist, and thrive, in extreme situations.

    OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK

                This book offers an alternative lens through which to view successful leaders and teams by analyzing cases drawn from a diverse set of extreme situations.  The book aims to develop a body of knowledge, research, and principles which can be extrapolated from these case studies.  Authors may submit chapters which explore extreme leadership by focusing on extreme leaders, extreme teams, and/or extreme situations. Authors are encouraged to consider the construct of Extreme Leadership as research question.  Why are some leaders successful and why do some fail?  What are the factors that explain successful leadership and team behavior in extreme siutations> How do leaders and followers change as situations move beyond the norm into the extreme?  What leadership lessons can be extrapolated from these examples to advance leadership research and management practice?

    SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

                Researchers are invited to submit a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the focus and content areas of the proposed chapter. The deadline for chapter proposals is December 10, 2011.  Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by January 31, 2012 about the status of their proposals and will be sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by May 1, 2012. All submitted chapters will be reviewed using a double-blind review process. Contributors will be required to serve as reviewers for this project.  Please contact either editor for further information.  Submissions can be forwarded electronically in Pages, Word or PDF document format to Dr. Cristina M. Giannantonio at giannant@chapman.edu.

    PUBLISHER

                This book is scheduled to be published by Edward Elgar Publishing, an international publisher in economics, finance, business and management, law and public policy, with over 3000 titles in print. Risks of Organizing and Organizing of Risks

    Are organizations, through their choices of technologies, products and processes,

    risky by design? How can organizations and institutions be designed to effectively assess,

    manage and govern risks? Papers in this stream will address these and related questions by

    focusing on the complex relationship between risk and organizing.

    Risk and its management are increasingly prominent features of organizations and

    their environments. Outside the organization, risk discourse frames a long heterogeneous list of societal concerns in which organizations are implicated, including global pandemics;

    terrorism; food shortages; financial instability; chemical contamination; and climate change

    among others. Theorizing of risks by scientists not only fuels this process but has also given

    rise to a well developed discipline, "risk analysis", that has applied this body of knowledge to a remarkable diversity of social contexts.

    Consequently, a notable "turn to risk" (Mythen, 2008) is evident in sociology, economics, anthropology and political science as scholars seek to understand our contemporary "risk society" (Beck, 1992). Understanding the cultures (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1982; Douglas, 1992) and systems of governmentality (Foucault, 1991) through which organizations operate requires scholarly engagement with risk.

    With the emergence of our "risk society", organizations are not only seen as producers of risks borne by other actors, but they have also become bearers of regulatory, legal, and reputational risks as governments and other stakeholders increasingly target them in their efforts to manage the risks inherent in organizing. Indeed, inside the organization, the discourse of risk and its management has become a source of principles for organizing and managing in general, with important implications for how organizations are represented, managed and governed, as well as for how they respond to actors in their environment (Power, 2007).

    This has led to novel species of risk (e.g. operational, reputational); the rise of programmes such as Enterprise Risk Management; and new organizational roles such as the Chief Risk Officer. No longer the sole purview of those working in finance and insurance, issues of risk and its management increasingly inform managerial decision making in all sectors of the economy. In fact, "ideas about risk and risk management have come to play a key role in the very idea of organizing and organization itself" (Scheytt, Soin, Sahlin-Andersson & Power, 2006: 1336).

    Despite these developments, risk remains "an important but under-investigated

    feature of organizations in Late Modernity" (Gephardt, Van Maanen & Oberlechner, 2009:

    141). Papers in this stream will address this gap, exploring and illuminating the multiple

    connections between organizing and risk. We are interested in papers that examine any aspect of risk in and around organizations. As issues of risk often cut across traditional

    disciplinary boundaries, we welcome papers that draw on multiple perspectives, including

    organization theory, strategy, accounting, economics, and marketing. Specifically, we invite

    contributions that explore themes such as:

    Risk and Organizational Environments: Industries, Institutions and Stakeholders

    Institutional design for societal risk management

    The role of risk in institutional change

    The role of risk in technological and industrial evolution

    Risk and involuntary stakeholders

    Risk regulation and its consequences for organizations

    Risk discourse and its consequences for organizations

    Risk and Organizations: Organizing and Managing Risk

    Organizational design for risk management, including risk metrics

    Organizational processes of risk assessment and management

    Risk and organizational sense-making; risk and decision-making

    Risk, uncertainty and theories of organization-environment relations

    Risk and stakeholder theory

    Risk and theories of organizations and the natural environment

    Risk and innovation; risk and technological design

    Risk and Individuals: Enacting Risk

    Risk and power relations

    Risk and trust

    Risk and identity

    Dror Etzion is Assistant Professor at the Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill

    University. He completed his Ph.D. studies at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.

    His research program focuses on environmental metrics: how we decide what we measure,

    how new metrics diffuse in the organizational landscape, and how accurately the measures

    used actually capture the reality of business impacts on the environment. His Ph.D. work was

    awarded the Booz Allen Hamilton/Strategic Management Society Fellowship and the Aspen

    Institute's Business and Society Program Dissertation Proposal Award. He has published in

    Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Inquiry, and MIT

    Sloan Management Review.

    Steve Maguire is Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. His research focuses on institutional and technological change resulting when commercial, scientific and political struggles intersect around social or environmental issues. He is a recognized expert on the precautionary principle as a tool of risk management, and is currently appointed to the Government of Canada Chemicals Management Plan "Challenge Advisory Panel", which advises Health Canada and Environment Canada on the application of the precautionary principle and weight of evidence in screening approximately 200 "high priority" chemicals for health and environmental risks. He has published numerous academic articles and book chapters including articles in the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Studies, Journal of Management Studies,Health Care Management Review, Global Governance, Greener Management International, Strategic Organization, and Emergence.

    Nelson Phillips is Professor of Strategy and Organizational Behaviour at Imperial College

    London where he is also Head of the Organization and Management Group. His research

    Call for Short Paper Submissions

    EGOS Sub-theme: Institutional Work and the Institutionalization of Inequality

    Deadline: Please submit a short paper of not more than 3,000 words (incl. references and all other materials) by January 16, 2012 at the EGOS website: http://www.egos2012.net

    Convenors:

     Thomas B. Lawrence, Simon Fraser University, Canada (tom_lawrence@sfu.ca)

    John M. Amis, University of Memphis, USA (johnamis@memphis.edu)

    Kamal A. Munir, University of Cambridge (km288@hermes.cam.ac.uk)

    Over recent years, we have seen inequities grow in many of our societal institutions, prompting debates, demonstrations, and crises, in countries around the world regarding the state of nations' governance, health care, education, and economic systems. Our aim in this sub-theme is to examine such changes and explore the roles that institutions play in shaping systems of exclusion and inequality around the world. More specifically, our focus is on the relationship between institutions, inequality and institutional work (Lawrence, Suddaby & Leca, 2009). Institutional work describes "the purposive action of individuals and organizations aimed at creating, maintaining and disrupting institutions" (Lawrence & Suddaby, 2006: 215). In keeping with the Colloquium theme of "Design?!", we are interested in exploring the roles that individual and organizational actors play in the formation, ongoing operation, and potential transformation of institutions that work to include certain groups while excluding others, reinforce unequal access to power and decision-making mechanisms, and provide freedom and wealth to some parts of society while impoverishing and constraining others.

    We are interested in institutional work that leads, or has led, to the formation, operation, transformation, or destruction of institutions associated with a broad range of social inequalities, including, but not limited to: differential access to health care, education, housing, food, economic resources, power structures, or areas of recreation; degradation of living conditions, the environment, social structures, or relationships; and direct or indirect exploitation of groups on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, disability, or sexuality.

    Submissions are encouraged across a wide range of levels of analysis: world-systems, regional or national societies, organizational fields or populations, organizations or subunits within organizations, and individuals or groups. We are especially encouraging of work than spans multiple levels of analysis, and that adopts a longitudinal view of institutions, either historically or in real time. Further, we are interested in work that seeks engagement with a wide range of theoretical and empirical approaches, including but not limited to institutional logics, practices and/or routines, feminism, critical theory, actor network theory, sensemaking, semiotics, network analyses, discourse analyses, and action research approaches. We equally welcome case studies, comparative research projects, ethnographies, survey-based work, large statistical analyses, and conceptual pieces.

    Thomas B. Lawrence is the W. J. VanDusen Professor of Management at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. His research focuses on the dynamics of power, change and institutions in organizations and organizational fields. It has appeared in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly and Organization Studies. He is a co-editor of Institutional Work: Actors and Agency in Institutional Studies of Organization (2009), and the Sage Handbook of Organization Studies, 2nd Edition (2006).

    John M. Amis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management at the University of Memphis. His research interests center on issues of organizational and institutional change in the public and private sectors. In addition to two books, he has had articles published in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Research Methods, and American Journal of Public Health. He has recently received grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Tennessee Board of Regents to investigate the creation and implementation of policies designed to combat childhood obesity.

    Kamal A. Munir is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at University of Cambridge, where he has been based since 2000. He obtained his PhD in Organization and Management Theory from McGill University, Canada. Kamal has published several articles in organizational and technology journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Industrial and Corporate Change, Organization Studies and Research Policy. In addition, he has written numerous articles for prominent newspapers and magazines such as The Financial Times, The Guardian, Financial Express India, Dawn, Herald and World Business, and his work has been cited in several forums, including BBC's Hard Talk, Wired magazine, and BusinessWeek.

    Background: Patent data is increasingly used in sophisticated analyses, helping experts to investigate innovation, the advancement of science, and technology-related activities. Patent information is also employed by industry to do competitive analysis and to help plan R&D and technology strategies and in government to gather important information about the patent system and its performance. Advances in computing power and the availability of patent databases have expanded the possibilities for conducting statistical analysis and research, while the demand for patent statistics is rising as economic performance is increasingly tied to technological innovation.

    Topics of Interest: The "Patent Statistics for Decision Makers 2011" Conference will explore advances in the analysis of patent information in the context of the changing legal, economic, competitive and technological landscapes. The Conference aims to educate and share best practices by surveying the breadth of thinking - while exploring the frontiers of our knowledge - on issues relevant to using patent information by industry, academic, and government decision makers, including:

    1. Next generation of patent-related indicators, such as indicators of patent quality;

    2. Patent valuation and Intellectual Property (IP) taxation regimes;

    3. Patenting strategies and patents' use in knowledge networks and markets;

    4. Business dynamics and technology-based entrepreneurship;

    5. Competitive analysis (including patent mapping and visualization);

    6. Patenting in growing technical fields (such as clean technologies);

    7. Planning R&D investments and measuring R&D performance;

    8. Understanding the operation of the patent system and formulating IP policy reform;

    9. Sustaining patent office operations in a fee-based system.

    Statistical analysis of patent data commonly aids decision makers in assessing the opportunities available to them, and provides key insights into the risks and challenges associated with their decision options.
