    Hello Colleagues,

I am planning to design and teach a Social Entrepreneurship course for undergraduate business students. I wanted to make it pretty experiential and wonder if I could get some suggestions from the AOM community on- course design, curriculum, books and resources, activities, or any other relevant advice.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

    Hi Kanhaiya,

I, too, am working on a course in Social Entrepreneurship for Western Carolina in the fall.

I am building off a prior course syllabus and incorporating my experiences working in the social sector for a couple of decades. The prior course is not very experiential, and I want to incorporate the UN's Social Development Goals into the curriculum.

However, I probably won't have the course designed for a couple more months, though. So, I would also welcome any input or insights from others.

I would be happy to share my materials once complete.

    All the best,
    -David (dharkins@wcu.edu)

    Hello David,

Thank you for reaching out. With your experience in this field, I am sure you will develop a very innovative program.

I have started developing the framework, and it will be a good idea to catch up towards the end of the semester.

    Hi Kanhaiya & David,

It has been a while, but when I was at the University of Richmond I taught a class that I called Social Entrepreneurship and Prosocial Motivation. Attached is the summer syllabus, fall syllabus, grading guides, etc.

The main deliverable for the class was a response to a request for proposals (RFP attached) from the microcredit organization Esperanza-and, the class raised money for Esperanza and we took a trip to visit the Dominican Republic (paid for by the university) where we gave the money to Esperanza and presented the findings from our research.

I hope some of this may be useful as you develop your classes.

    Best, Jeff

    Dear Jeffrey,
I am in the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode in the state of Kerala, India. This part of India is known as "God's own Country" for its greenery. I have been trying to develop a course of 20 hrs for practising managers for our executive MBA program. Is it ok if I partake of the outlines you have attached? I would also like to come back with queries on the design I might have. With the pandemic, we are limited in hands-on experience and visit to Social Enterprises here in India.

    Hello Dr. Gumusay,

Thank you for sharing. Both courses are exciting. I teach an innovation course that has a crisis and innovation component, and your second course will help me improve that part.

    Hi Kanhaiya and others,

Check out Debbi Brock's new site, Social Change Innovators! It is just what you want! She has created a free platform for those who are teaching SE and don't want to reinvent the wheel. Syllabi, exercise, etc. It's an amazing resource. I was on a webinar where she walked us through it this winter and was very, very impressed.

    Good luck,

We teach a course here at Princeton, titled Creativity, Innovation, and Design. The class is an introduction to how to tackle wicked problems, problems so complex that no amount of words can describe all the constraints faced in any mitigation. Each semester, each section of the class, is given a truly wicked campus problem and each team must present to the university's highest officials potential designs for mitigating such problems a sexual assault, systemic bias, loneliness, and micro-agression, among others. Many of the student's proposed designs have been implemented by the university, which has made the class very popular as students aspire to leave their mark. (The class was awarded the 2019 AOM ENT Div Innovation in Pedagogy Award.) Many of the students then go on to use what they learned to spend several years tackling community problems like affordable housing, immigration, mental health of high schoolers, etc. We are happy to share all our materials if anyone is interested.

    Hello Derek,

Thank you for sharing your ideas on this topic.

Your model seems to have a real impact and the projects are very much social entrepreneurship. I am keen to see a few sample reports prepared by the students and also the process you have put in place to guide them as they progress in the semester.

Hello All. Based upon your interest in Princeton's Creativity, Innovation, and Design class I have attached the three documents. First, a general overview of the pedagogy of the class (CID General overview.docx). The next document is the one we use to introduce new lecturers to the class (CID Overview.pptx), and the third document is a narrated set of slides we send to each student before the first class (CID class 1 final.pptx). As these documents are meant to prompt discussions during a face-to-face meeting, I apologize for anything that's not absolutely crystal clear from these 3 documents. That said, I would be happy to go over any of these materials on a Zoom call with anyone, and help anyone that is interested in implementing all or part of this class into one of their own. – Derek Lidow

    Dear Derek,

I study intuition in decision-making and I intend to develop a course on the subject.

I believe that your course (Creativity, Innovation, and Design) can inspire me and help me with this, could you share the materials with me, please?

    Hi Kanhaiya -

Here is another syllabus for you:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tke0L3KA6mmhJHmL5R9ryzfp_GPyjOOhuvsi6v5Dje4/edit

It is for a graduate level course that I taught a couple of years ago. It had three streams, and the most experiential piece of it was a modified version of the lean startup approach to "getting out of the building." If I were doing it again, I would probably use some resources from Daniela Papi's "Apprenticing with the Problem" approach, which came out of her time at Oxford:

    http://tacklingheropreneurship.com/

Glad to see this thread and to have some of those other resources available, and happy to discuss further!

    Hi Kanhaiya, hi all,

We've designed the "Accelerating Investment Readiness" MOOC (#AirMOOC) on social entrepreneurship and impact investing. All resources are freely available and you and all are welcome to use them. In particular the animated videos on our YouTube Channel were well received: https://youtu.be/yPUVuh_uFgg

We are currently working on an open source platform: "TRANSFORM: Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainability". I'll be happy to share when it's available. We also want to present the work at TLC @ AOM, not only to spread the content but also invite educators to build the platform further in the future.

    Best wishes,
