Research and Theory to Foster Change in the Face of Grand Health Care Challenges

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for Volume 22 of Advances in Health Care Management (AHCM), an annual research series published by Emerald Publishing. The past few volumes have focused on identifying and setting a research agenda for grand healthcare challenges (see Preface, Vol. 20, Hefner & Nembhard 2021). Through informed commentaries from prominent scholars in health care management, Volume 21 (Shortell, Burns, & Hefner, in press) highlighted the current opportunities and challenges of: health system digitization; diversity, equity, and inclusion; COVID-19; performance improvement; network governance; inter-sector alliances; alterative payment models; and social determinants of health. A common theme across the chapters in Volume 21 was discussion of the organizational change needed to address these challenges.
Therefore, this year's call is for papers that more deeply examine how health care organizations position for, and pursue, successful sustained change in response to ever-evolving environmental pressures. For example, how do we motivate change within individuals, teams, or organizations? How can principals of change management be utilized to support responses to grand challenges? And, can we identify, adapt, and scale specific successful change mechanisms? Submissions can consider one grand challenge, multiple challenges simultaneously (e.g. HIT and DEI), or consider change mechanisms to respond to the general problem of both long-standing and emerging 'grand challenges in healthcare.'
A related aim of this, as well as future volumes, is to devote a section to theory building within health care management. Many of the chapters in Volume 21 highlight the important place for theory in addressing health care challenges and guiding future research. AHCM wants to acknowledge this by becoming a recognized venue for papers focused on theory development or reliant on existing theory for research design and/or results interpretation.
Submissions to this call for papers can be empirical studies, literature reviews, conceptual frameworks, case explorations, and discussions of policies and implications. Paper length can vary from short report or commentary to a lengthy theory piece. The goal is to highlight the diversity and excellence in the health care management field.
Submissions: Abstract submission is to assess fit within the volume and allow for editorial planning. Full invited manuscripts are accepted at go.osu.edu/advances on a rolling basis until Nov. 15, 2022. This website includes manuscript formatting instructions. Contact the editorial team if you have questions. Additionally, chapter authors can select open access publishing upon acceptance.
