Teaching Committee Mid-Winter Meeting Report

by Diana M. Hechavarria, Ph.D.
August 2022

The Teaching Committee of the AOM Entrepreneurship Division is an engaged group of academic scholars renowned for their teaching excellence in the area of entrepreneurship both in United States and Europe. The committee strives to maintain a vibrant and diverse membership representing a cross-section of pedagogical approaches to entrepreneurship. Several members of the committee are former winners of the Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award, which has been sponsored until 2019 by McGraw-Hill. The Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award was subsequently sponsored by Yeshiva University.

Efforts in year 2022 for the Teaching Committee have been focused on: (1) confirming committee membership with those members whose terms have not expired and replacing members whose terms had expired; (2) collaborating with NORD and Yeshiva University to identify best sponsorship solutions for the Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy award, who decided to end their sponsorship this year and, (3) issuing a call for award nominations and reviewing submissions.

Committee membership
In 2022, the committee had 14 confirmed members. This number included the chairperson and the award chairperson. The membership is an engaged group of academic scholars teaching in the area of entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, family business and hailing from institutions in North America and Europe. We continue the tradition of inviting former winners of the Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award to join the committee and intend to do so again this year.

With several committee members’ term ending in January 2022, the final number of members is currently 11 members and includes 7 returning members and 4 new appointments:
  • Our newest 2022 award winner is Deepak Hedge from New York University with the “Endless Frontier Labs” course. Deepak will join the committee.
  • The chair, Diana M. Hechavarria effectively took on her role after the in August 2021.
  • The former chair, Rachida Justo, is offering continuing support but is no longer serving as committee member.

The Teaching Committee membership is listed below. This chart reflects the current membership of the committee, effective August 2022.

Sponsorship
Yashiva University has sponsored the award thanks to the help of our Award Chairperson, Noam Wasserman, who is also Dean of Yeshiva University's Sy Syms School of Business. Thanks to his support our committee was able to keep on offering the 1500 monetary award to our winner, which is particularly valuable given the gradual decrease in sponsorships available for our division in the last few years. We are also in conversations with NORD to offer a second level award for 2023.

Innovation pedagogy Award
In 2022, deadline for submission was May 22nd. We received 4 very high-quality submissions, a great slate to evaluate. Mirroring the level of maturity attained by the academic field of entrepreneurship, submissions included using hybrid approaches to teaching entrepreneurship in a bootcamp style course, intensive, space entrepreneurship, social innovation, flipped classroom, and instructional strategies.

In terms of format, the judges were asked to provide ratings and comments for each submission on a survey uploaded to survey monkey, for which they were provided a link. As in previous years, the survey asked for responses on a set of the main criteria:
  1. Innovation and Novelty of the course
  2. Demonstrated and Potential Impact and Transferability of the course
  3. Relevance (e.g., actionable lessons for entrepreneurs, addresses a social need)

Ratings were recorded on a 7-point Likert-scale and were accompanied by comments for each of the criteria.

A winner emerged from the evaluations, which were due on June 15, 2022. Deepak Hedge (New York University) and the award will be mentioned during our Division Meeting this year. As in previous years, the Award Chairperson, Noam Wasserman, will continue in his role of facilitating the process, and we are grateful for his service.

New Activities
The committee is exploring how we can better serve our membership by examining what entrepreneurship teaching programs are available on the current educational market and completing a report for Mid-winter meeting to take stock of what our goal is for 2022-2023. We plan on doing a survey to also understand what our members would like to see from us as the teaching committee at AoM.
