Research Policy Special Issue Call for Paper"Innovative start-ups and policy initiatives: heterogeneity, impact and implications"Innovation policy increasingly emphasizes the role of start-ups in bringing innovations to the market and entrepreneurship policies are becoming more selective by targeting more innovative start-ups rather than new firms in general. This convergent development is evident by the number of Startup Acts, which have been issued worldwide to sustain the creation and the growth of innovative start-ups. This large and heterogeneous set of new initiatives promoting innovative start-ups offers the opportunity of some reflections, appraisal and refinements of the very nature of innovative entrepreneurship and related policies. National strategies in support of innovative start-ups are quite mixed and somehow experimental and there is still a lack of evidence on their effectiveness. This special issue seeks to stimulate novel, interdisciplinary, theoretically- and empirically-sound scientific research on innovative start-ups, on policies for innovative start-ups and on the impact of such policies. By recognizing and deepening our knowledge about the heterogeneity of innovative start-ups in different institutional contexts, we aim at better understanding the idiosyncratic nature of such firm and, in turn, which policy actions are more effective in a given context, and why.
