    First announcement

Call for Papers for a Workshop

    ORGANIZING FOR DIGITAL INNOVATION

    Submission deadline: November 1st, 2015

    Date workshop:  March 11th & 12th, 2016

Location: VU University Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

    Contributors:

Youngjin Yoo (Temple University), Ola Henfridsson (University of Warwick),

Raghu Garud (Penn State University), Patrick Cohendet (HEC-Montreal/Mosaic),

    & Michael Barrett (Cambridge University)

    Organized by:

KIN Research Group (www.kinresearch.nl), VU University, and

Industrial Design Engineering (www.io.tudelft.nl/en/), TU Delft.

    About the workshop

We invite you to submit an extended abstract to the workshop on Organizing for Digital Innovation. This will be a small-scale academic workshop that brings together researchers from fields of innovation, information systems, design and organization studies who are interested in the emerging phenomenon of digital innovation. The workshop will also include contributions by selected companies (e.g. Philips Design, CERN) on the forefront of digital innovation to inspire and spur reflections. The main aim, apart from stimulating interaction and developing high-quality academic papers, is to create a inter-disciplinary research agenda on organizing for digital innovation and set the scene for future research.

    Background

Digital innovation concerns the application of digital tools, technology and digital infrastructure in new products, services, and business models that offer customers enhanced or unique value. From the 'internet of things' to the pervasive use of social networking sites; from 3D printing to miniaturizing sensing electronics; and from crowdsourcing platforms to millions of publicly available pictures, songs and videos, digital technology is now considered a primary source of innovation. Such innovations bridge digital and physical domains, connect heterogeneous actors and systems, and are generative and ever evolving. These characteristics offer new opportunities and challenges for the design, development and use of digital innovations. This workshop seeks to advance research on actual processes and practices of organizing for digital innovation. For instance, what is the role of action-oriented approaches emphasizing agility, experimentation, effectuation, and learning in the design and development of digital innovations? How do creative actors interact with larger ecosystems and infrastructures? Because digital innovations have pervasive influences on the practices and values in work and daily life, more understanding is also needed about the implementation and use of digital innovations and how that informs future design and development of such systems. How can the data generated during the use of a digital innovation support innovators during the design and development of the new generation of products and services? How do domain experts and end users incorporate digital innovations in their practices and what is their role as co-innovators?

    Possible topics

We therefore seek both theoretical and empirical papers that could be focused on, but need not be limited to, the following themes:

    crossover collaboration for digital innovation

    creative industry and digital innovation

role of 'big data' in the development and evolution of products and services

creating and changing new business models for digital innovation

integration of physical and digital technology in product development

implementation of digital innovations in organizational processes

involvement of users in digital innovations

the role of infrastructures, ecosystems, platforms, and complementors in digital innovation

design thinking and design's role in digital innovation

new (agile and lean) design and development methods for digital innovations

service dominant logic and design in digital innovations

the role of (big) data in digital innovations

    performativity of digital technology

    Submission Process

Submission of extended abstract (about 1500 words) before November 1, 2015 to di.feweb@vu.nl

Notification of decision on acceptance by mid November, 2015.

Full paper due by March 01, 2016

    Additional Information

Participation fee is Euro 250, and for Phd students Euro 150. A selection of papers will be published in a special issue of The Information Society, following a regular review process.
