    Big Data and Innovation: Toward a Research Agenda  (Saturday, August 2, 2014, 12:30-2:30pm in Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 107A)

     

    The goal of this PDW is to consider the strategic opportunities and challenges in commercializing big data, explore novel research questions and methodologies, and begin to identify a scholarly community and a research agenda. Our panel consists of academic and industry experts who have years of experience in studying a variety of computing and communication platforms and will lead a discussion of the implications of big data for the strategic management of innovation. Arpita Ghosh (Cornell University)  will discuss the role of users in creating big data, via voluntary contribution, e.g. user-generated content and crowdsourcing platforms, and via non-voluntary contribution as in the tracking and collection of data about user behavior (browsing, purchases, location). Her focus is on the design of incentives, markets and policy for big data. Rashik Parmar (IBM) will explore the conditions for the emergence of data platforms, and the use of big data as a basis for innovation in a variety of industry contexts. Llewellyn Thomas (Imperial College Business School) will review the emergence of trade in big data through commercial transactions. He will outline the new types of businesses that seek to create and appropriate value, how these new business models will emerge, and the importance of big data ecosystems. Aija Leiponen (Cornell University) will overview the legal and governance challenges of big data and lead a discussion on their strategic implications for innovation. The workshop format includes short presentations, Q&A, and small group discussion. The workshop will seek to highlight the following questions:

     

    How can big data be valued and commercialized?

    What are the different types of big data and how can information (value) be extracted from them?

    How can service users be motivated to contribute high-quality inputs through user-generated content?

    What business models are there for the commercialization of big data?

    What kinds of big data ecosystems might emerge to enable the combination of disparate data sources?

    How will open data lead to new data-driven business models?

    How will big data assets and streams be legally and strategically governed?
