Special Issue on Technology Entrepreneurship  CALL FOR PAPERS

    DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15, 2010

    Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal

Guest Editors: Christine Beckman, Kathleen Eisenhardt, Suresh Kotha,

     Alan Meyer & Nandini Rajagopalan

Advising Editor: Mike Hitt, Texas A&M University

    Background and Purpose

This special issue will explore research questions at the nexus of entrepreneurship and technology. Technology entrepreneurship draws from two well-established, but related fieldsentrepreneurship and technical innovation. The challenge for technical entrepreneurs is not only to create a new business, but also to invent new technologies and shape nascent markets. The challenge for policy makers and other institutional actors is to frame the context in which such entrepreneurs will emerge and prosper.  The intent of this special issue is to provide a forum to advance our understanding of the research issues that fall at this nexus.

We invite scholars from entrepreneurship, strategy, innovation, economics, history, sociology, organizational behavior, and technology studies to contribute papers to this special issue. We welcome studies that: (1) employ a variety of methodologies, from statistical, simulation, and mathematical modeling to case-studies; (2) examine multiple levels of analysis including the entrepreneurial team, technology, firm, industry and country; (3) employ traditional or emerging theoretical approaches such as bricolage, effectuation, and improvisation; (4) examine the creation or transformation of technology-based industries; and (5) study venture formation in novel industry and institutional settings.

    Research Questions

We seek papers that provide new theoretical perspectives and/or empirical insights for technology entrepreneurship in both for-profit and non-profit sectors. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to the following.
    ·        Although many studies of entrepreneurship focus on individual entrepreneurs, teams of co-founders typically join together in launching technology-based businesses.  How do these teams effectively work together? Do the characteristics of the co-founders influence the recognition of technological opportunities and their subsequent development? How do co-founders share ownership?

    ·        Context is likely to play a key role in the formation and evolution of technology-based businesses. How do regulatory and tax policies affect such ventures? Is technology entrepreneurship driven by discoveries in basic science, M&A and IPO activity, number of technically-trained professionals, national culture, or other factors? What is the interplay between technology-based ventures and established firms? How do the dynamics of technical ecosystems, rivalry, and platform-based industries influence the strategies of technical entrepreneurs?

    ·        Much research on technology entrepreneurship uses the biotechnology and semiconductor industries as its setting. As a result, we know less about entrepreneurial activity in novel areas such as ventures that rely on user-driven technical innovations, pursue technical innovations for education, and target technologies for developing economies. Is technology entrepreneurship different in these settings?

    ·        Since universities are often sources of the new technologies that create entrepreneurial opportunities, studies are needed to explicate the roles of these actors. What are the strategies that universities employ to aid in the emergence and growth of technology-based firms?  How does technical knowledge diffuse from university research to potential entrepreneurs? What role do academic scientists play in the venture creation process?

    ·        Intellectual property is central to technology entrepreneurship. What are the various approaches to both formal and informal IP protection undertaken by technology entrepreneurs? What are the implications of these approaches for venture performance and industry evolution? How do these approaches influence the returns to technical innovation?

    ·        A significant number of technology-based ventures are funded by venture capital, corporate venture capital, and angel investors. But, these investors often go beyond providing financial resources. How do these investors nurture venture success? Do these investors differentially influence firm outcomes such as innovation and growth? How is corporate governance affected by the presence of diverse investors?

    ·        Recognizing the challenges of degraded natural environments and expensive energy, entrepreneurs are launching ventures that promote sustainable business practices and commercialize clean and/or energy efficient technologies. What unique managerial practices and business models are employed in these firms? Which policy interventions encourage their formation and growth?

    ·        Technology entrepreneurs who seek to advance social ends rather than just commercial ones are becoming increasingly prominent. How do these entrepreneurs create value? Who captures the value that is created? How can these entrepreneurs benefit from customer creation of content, client empowerment, and open source business models? Does the emergence of technology ventures addressing social concerns influence other institutional actors such as NGOs and national governments?

    Practice Theme Committee (PTC)

2011 PTC Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

Annual Meetings Academy of Management, August 12-16, San Antonio, Texas, USA

    (August 12-13 for PDW presentations)

Online Submissions Due January 11th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ET (New York time): http://annualmeeting.aomonline.org/2011/

The Practice Theme Committee is of strategic importance to the Academy of Management and spans across all Divisions and Interest Groups of the Academy. It aims to:

Develop greater awareness of what practice means and how it can usefully inform our scholarship in terms of both research and teaching.

Identify and profile exemplary initiatives that bridge the gap between theory and practice and engage practitioners and academics in the co-creation of knowledge.

Create a platform for ongoing engagement with practitioners so that the knowledge we discover is relevant and has impact.

This year's theme "West Meets East: Enlightening. Balancing. Transcending.", encourages us to self-reflectively examine our cherished assumptions, perspectives, and values to generate new cultural lenses for research and practice. Moreover, it implores us to engage our practice and research with cross-cultural awareness, global impact, and principled accountability. In particular, we invite you to take the challenge that a practice perspective offers to engage with:

    1.      How do we bridge theory and practice to bridge cross-cultural understanding in management research? How do we co-create knowledge between practitioners and academics to bridge cultural boundaries?

    2.      How do we engage our practice research with cross-cultural awareness, global impact, and principled accountability? How do we recognize and reward relevance, impact, and accountability in management research and practice?

    3.      How do we enhance management practice and research with curricula that foster cross-cultural awareness, global impact, and principled accountability? What are the challenges? What are some exemplary practices?

    4.      What are the leadership practices that embody enlightenment, balance, and transcendence? How do leaders enlighten societies, balance trade-offs, and transcend conflicts across borders?

    5.      How can we better understand the role of phronesis in addressing 'mal-practice' and 'mis-management' in advancing greater balance and harmony in research and practice? How do we bridge East and West through our practices to make a difference? How do we demonstrate and embody reflexive practices that show trenchant cross-cultural understanding?

We encourage exciting, innovative, and interdisciplinary workshops involving both researchers and practitioners. Please note that the "Rule of Three" applies for the 2011 PDW program. If you have any questions before submitting, please contact Kuo Frank Yu (Kuo.Frank.Yu@CityU.Edu.HK), PDW co-Chair, and Wolfgang H. Guettel (wolfgang.guettel@jku.at), PDW co-Chair.

With this call for papers, we intend to invite research that advances a discussion that

relates to how sustainability is developed and maintained (sustained) in organizations

with a particular emphasis on international organizations, whether they are multinational corporations (MNCs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or international governmental organizations (IGOs). We consider sustainability to be an approach to business that considers economic, environmental and social issues in balanced, holistic and long term ways that benefit current and future generations of concerned stakeholders.

The invited research may contribute on multiple levels: individual, organization, industry, field or community, and international or global levels, to develop research about how to sustain sustainability in organizations from management and ethical perspectives, particularly using theoretical lenses of strategy and organization theory. The impact of ethical, sustainable thinking and the associated deep rooted changes have enhanced business and society. Now, managers and others need to ensure the sense of urgency is sustained so that they do not lose ground and rather, ensure that ethical, sustainable progress continues. We will consider both theoretical and empirical papers and suggest particular subtopic areas below. This issue will publish high quality and progressive scholarship that builds theory. Furthermore, the research included will develop the area of sustainability so that it moves toward a more mature stage. Submissions may focus on, but must not be limited to, one of the following domains:

Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations Subtopic Areas and Questions:

    1) Types of Organizations: MNCs, NGOs, and IGOs

How do concerned stakeholders maintain their ethical influence on MNCs so that

MNCs continuously improve in regards to sustainability and ethics?

How do MNCs define and enact CSR? After this has happened, how do firms

maintain the focus on it over time so that they do not lapse into old bad habits?

How do stakeholders, in comparison to MNCs, expect sustainability practices to

evolve; what outcomes do they expect? Will ethical, sustainable practices prevail

    with stakeholders' support?

How do the stakeholders and MNCs resolve differences and tensions these days

    and how has it changed?

What are the future plans of MNCs in terms of their sustainable transformation?

How fast do they plan to change and which stakeholders are they choosing to

satisfy? Which ones will be left unsatisfied and what will be the consequences? Is

this possible imbalance acceptable from an ethical standpoint?

How does the presence of MNCs affect the progress of sustainability in developed

    nations?

How do MNCs transfer sustainability innovation from one subsidiary to others?

What is the role of the headquarters?

What are IGOs and NGOs doing to continue to promote and maintain sustainable

practices and ethics in organizations globally?

What are IGOs' and NGO's capabilities compared to MNCs', in respect of

    promoting sustainability globally?

What motivates IGOs and NGOs to promote sustainability and how impactful are

the actions? Which ones find long term success in their sustainability initiatives

    and why?

Are developing nations acting in a sustainable and ethical manner and can they? If

they are, how are they doing so and maintaining their progress?

What are IGOs and NGOs doing to support or hinder sustainable development in

either developing or developed nations? What are the differences in their

    approaches in these different environments?

Are IGOs and NGOs providing continuing support through incentives to

environmental entrepreneurs for their sustainable technological developments and

is it working? Are these incentives and projects nationally strategic to the

countries in which the entrepreneurs reside such that there is beneficial economic

development? Does the support include emphasis on ethical decision making and

    management practices?

How do IGOs and NGOs coordinate and collaborate with each other, with

governments and with firms to influence sustainable practices

    2) Types of Activities: Environmental Innovation and Combating Climate Change

How do firms harness creative destruction when pursuing environmental

sustainability efforts? What happens after the big changes? Does sustainability

    innovation become incremental?

What talents and special expertise are required for environmental innovation? Is

ethical character and behavior part of the talent profile? How has the labor pool

changed to support this special type of sustainable innovation e.g., full life cycle

designs and use or development of special reusable or recyclable materials.

Is there a global model of firm sustainability innovation that has been sustained?

If there is, does/do the model(s) include subscription to a set of ethical values,

what are they, and how is the ethical culture sustained?

How does green technology evolution and revolution affect the current and future

competitive landscape? Will competitive behavior amongst firms also become

more ethical because the technological shift is one towards sustainability?

Which firms will survive the changes and will we experience an increase in

competition or more oligopoly due to the large investments required to develop

    green technology and commercialize it?

Who will be the winners and losers as we adopt green technologies and retire the

old ones? What are the ethical questions to consider under these circumstances?

How will consumers benefit from green technology? Will life become cheaper

and will our standard of living improve overall? How will the benefits of green

    technology be distributed?

How do consumers need to change so as to support the green technology

revolution? Will they change and if so, how fast? Will demand increase for goods

and services produced in currently perceived ethical, sustainable ways and will

the related standards be maintained and improved? How will ethical, sustainable

standards be set so as to satisfy consumer tastes and expectations?

How have firms responded to climate change and maintained their sustainable

performance? What processes of learning and change have they undergone in

order to find the right balance between seeking profitability and fighting climate

    change?

What kinds of organizational changes have helped firms to adapt to the

environmental changes that the world is experiencing?

Are firms changing adequately to help slow climate change and if not, what

    more needs to be achieved?

What aspects of supply chains are most impactful on climate change and how

should firms discover and adopt best practices in their global supply chains?

Should these best practices include ethics and how will they be explicitly

    incorporated into them?

    Timeline, Process & Standards

To be considered for the special issue, "Sustaining Sustainability in Organizations", full

papers must be submitted by May 1, 2011. All submissions will go through a doubleblind peer review process. 2011 Organization Science Winter Conference PRE-CONFERENCE

Steamboat Springs (CO) February 9th and 10th

Conveners: Arie Y. Lewin and Silvia Massini

We are looking forward to the 2011 Pre-conference and plan on the same format as prior years. This includes the Pre-conference Reception, and two sessions taking place Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

We are expecting that about one quarter of those attending will be "Regulars," with the rest being considered as "Theme Related". "Regulars" are people who have been attending about every other year (typically). They provide the enduring core and institutional structure of OSWC.

The organizing theme for OSWC XVII is to explore the topic of organizational memory. Organizational memory has been central to theories of organizational cognition, learning and knowledge. Theoretical models of organizational memory have been developed and the implications of where knowledge is embedded for competitive advantage described. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in organizational memory, with particular interest to the knowledge repositories of routines and transactive memory systems. Further, empirical research in both the laboratory and the field on organizational memory has increased. The Organization Science Winter Conference will explore new developments and suggest further research direction on the important topic of organizational memory. Dan Levinthal, Linda Argote and Ray Reagans are the conveners of OSWC XVII.

Those who are invited to present at the Pre-conference, will have about 20 minutes for their presentation followed by discussions. This format will accommodate about TWELVE presentations.

YOU may think of your talk as bringing all of us up-to-date with your recent research. WE THINK OF YOUR TALK AS THE BEGINNING OF AN OSWC CONVERSATION LASTING SEVERAL DAYS: on ski-lifts, in lift-lines and bars, or (imagine) at the conference itself! So, you need to help us out on this!!

    PRE-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

    Wednesday 9th: Registration at 4:30pm

Reception with open bar 5:30 to 7:00pm

Session from 7:00pm to10:00pm or when we conclude

Thursday 10th:   Continental Breakfast at 7:00am.

    Session from 7:30am to 10:30am.

Ski your heart out and legs off: 11:00am to 4:00pm

    OSWC (opening) Reception: 4:30 pm.

Pre-conference registration fee will be $35.00 and will include opening reception on Wednesday and breakfast on Thursday morning.

Please submit a ONE page summary of your paper to Ms Stefanie McAdoo Stefanie.mcadoo@duke.edu no later than December 1st 2010. EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN INVITED BY THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE TO ATTEND OSWC 2011 is also invited to join the Pre-Conference.

    CALL

    Organization Science Winter Conference

    OSWC-XVII

    February 10 – 13, 2011

    Organizational Memory

We are very pleased to announce the Seventeenth Annual Organization Science Winter Conference (OSWC-XVII). OSWC-XVII is sponsored by Organization Science in order to stimulate knowledge about organizations through experimentation and boundary-crossing conversation. It combines the leading-edge ideas of strategy and organization scholars, executives, entrepreneurs, and interested non-business scholars, in a community-enhancing setting. The time and place are February 10 - 13, 2011 at the Sheraton Steamboat Hotel and Conference Center, Steamboat Springs Colorado.

The Seventeenth Organization Science Winter Conference (OSWC-XVII) will explore the topic of organizational memory.

Examples of possible research questions include:

    1)                  How is organizational experience embedded in organizational memory?

    2)                  How is experience interpreted?  What are the processes of sense making that occur in the interpretation of experience?

    3)                  What is the role of analogical reasoning in the interpretation and storage of experience?

    4)                  How can we characterize organizational memory? What are the "retention bins", reservoirs or repositories of organizational knowledge?

    5)                  Under what condition do the various knowledge repositories complement each other? Under what conditions do they substitute for each other?

    6)                  When does organizational knowledge persist through time? When does it decay? Does knowledge acquired from certain kinds of experience or in certain repositories decay faster (or slower) than knowledge acquired from other kinds of experience?

    7)                  Under what conditions is erroneous data embedded in organizational memory?

    8)                  What challenges and opportunities do new organizational forms such as virtual teams or offshored arrangements pose for organizational memory?

    9)                  How do new developments in technology enable organizational memory?

    10)              What are new methods for studying organizational memory?

    11)              What is the relationship between organizational capabilities and organizational memory?

    12)              When does organizational memory facilitate (versus constrain) adaptation? Is organizational memory a source of inertia or of change?

In the tradition of OSWC, we invite 2-3 page proposals for plenary panels and interactive poster papers on the theme of the conference. If you are interested in attending OSWC-XVII but not as participant on the program please submit a statement expressing your desire to participate and describing your interest in organizational memory. The application deadline for proposals or individual applications to attend is November 1, 2010

As has been the case in the past, much of the plenary program is implemented from suggestions received from scholars wishing to participate in OSWC. Most authors will be invited to join another highly acclaimed OSWC tradition-the open-ended evening-long (7–10pm) Interactive Poster Sessions accompanied with finger food, wine, soft drinks and deserts. Historically, 50% of the OSWC attendee roster is reserved for participants new to the conference. Invitations to attend will be extended by the co-conveners of OSWC-XVII, Dan Levinthal, Linda Argote and Ray Reagans. Panel proposals, posters and statement of interest in participation should be submitted by email to Linda Argote c/o Jennifer Kukawa, jkukawa@andrew.cmu.edu.

Individuals having substantive questions are invited to contact the program co-chairs for OSWC-XVII:

Professor Dan Levinthal (Levinthal@wharton.upenn.edu), the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Professor Linda Argote (argote@cmu.edu), Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University and Professor Ray Reagans (rreagans@mit.edu), MIT Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The International Network of Business and Management Journals (INBAM) holds its Second Conference "Brokering Knowledge" in Valencia (Spain) from March 20st (Tuesday) to March 22nd (Thursday), 2012. Twelve editors of leading journals will participate in this 2nd Conference. It is organized by the Universitat de València and the Universidad Católica de Valencia. The following editors-in-chief have confirmed their presence and participation:

    David Audretsch (Small Business Economics),

Robert Blackburn (International Small Business Journal),

    Ghauri Pervez (International Business Review),

    Theresa Welbourne (Human Resource Management),

    John Peters (Management Decision),

Slawek Magala (Journal of Organizational Change Management),

Rick D. Hackett (Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences),

    Bruce Tracey (Cornell Hospitality Quarterly),

Adrian Ziderman (International Journal of Manpower),

    Gary Akehurst (Service Industries Journal),

Rodney Turner (International Journal of Project Management),

Vlad Vaiman (European Journal of International Management).

The overall theme of the Conference will be broken down into subtopics, with a total of twelve sessions, one for each journal. In this way, the various areas can be adapted to the different streams of research and editorial policies of each journal and editor participating at the Conference.

The journal editor corresponding to each area will open the session with an outline of Trend in the future in his/her journal. Authors will then go on to present the papers chosen for each session.

One of the results of the Conference is to select papers that, depending on the specialty of the journal and the quality of the papers, will constitute special issues of each of the journals.

Each of the twelve Sessions-Tracks (and consequently the special issues) would have three coordinators (that would be the guest editors of the special issue). Once the Conference has concluded, the guest editors (as well as the editor-in-chief of the journal) for each session will decide which papers are to be recommended for inclusion in the special issues/section of the corresponding publications. Depending on the quality of submissions, the best papers will be published in the special issues of these SSCI journals.

This will make this and subsequent Conferences organized by the Editor Network of the International Network of Business and Management Journals

    (INBAM) quite unique.

    Website available at: www.inbam.net

Thank you for your interest in the INBAM Network.

    Books – Call for Authors

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Greetings,

We are inviting academic editorial contributors to a new 1-volume reference work on the skills and characteristics of successful entrepreneurship.

New ventures often are launched into highly dynamic environments characterized by rapid technological change, inherent unpredictability, and an uncertain cash flow. Such ventures often require rapid growth to succeed. While new ventures offer those who initiate them a high degree of independence, excitement, and potential for great reward, they also offer high risk, stress, and greater potential for failure. Thus, it takes a special set of skills, techniques, and temperament to succeed. These skills, along with the potential risks and rewards and environmental settings and characteristics, are explored in the Encyclopedia of New Venture Management. The work will contain approximately 150 signed entries with Cross-References ("see-also") and suggestions for Further Readings.

We are now making assignments due December 10, 2010.

This comprehensive project will be published by SAGE Reference and will be marketed to academic and public libraries as a print and digital product available to students via the library's online services. The General Editor, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, is Dr. Matthew Marvel at Western Kentucky University's Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

If you are interested in contributing to this outstanding reference, it is a unique opportunity to contribute to the contemporary literature. Moreover, it can be a notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits. SAGE Publications offers an honorarium ranging from SAGE book credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the printed product for contributions totaling 10,000 words or more.

The list of available articles is already prepared, and as a next step we will e-mail you the Article List (Excel file) from which you can select topics that best fit your expertise and interests. Additionally, Style and Submission Guidelines will be provided that detail article specifications.

If you would like to contribute to building a truly outstanding reference with the Encyclopedia of New Venture Management, please contact me by the e-mail information below. Please provide a brief summary of your academic/publishing credentials in related issues.

    Thanks very much.

    Job Positions

    --------------------------------------------------------

Management and Organization Department Robert H. Smith School of Business,  University of Maryland Tenured/Tenure-Track Position in Strategys

We invite applications and nominations for an open rank (tenured or tenure track) professor position in the strategy area. We seek candidates with a deep commitment to research and teaching and invite applications from scholars interested in any sub-domain within the strategy field, broadly construed.

The Robert H. Smith School of Business (www.rhsmith.umd.edu) is recognized as one of the world's leading business schools for its strong track record in both research and teaching. Within the business school, the Management & Organization department is particularly proud to be viewed as one of the strongest departments (please visit http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/management to learn more about the M&O faculty and http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/strategy/ for information on the "Strategy Research Group" which includes faculty from other departments with a core interest in strategy). Our new hire should help strengthen an already strong M&O and broader strategy group faculty.

The Management & Organization (M&O) department consists of 30 core faculty. The group's interests and responsibilities cover the following areas: organizational behavior, human resources, strategy, globalization, and entrepreneurship. Research excellence serves as the foundation of the M&O department. A recent analysis of publications in the most prestigious journals related to the above areas indicated that, on a worldwide basis, M&O ranked among the leading five over the past five years. Some other indicators of the strength and scholarly reputation of M&O faculty include: (a) seven Fellows, including past Dean of Fellows, of the Academy of Management; (b) two Past Presidents of the Academy of Management; (c) several past members of the 11-member board of governors of the Academy of Management; (d) six University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teachers; (e) multiple editorships and editorial board memberships on highly prestigious academic journals; and (f) multiple best paper awards from prestigious journals and academies. M&O also has a vibrant PhD program which is getting stronger each year. Recent placements of PhD graduates include universities ranked in the top 20 institutions for management research. M&O faculty also believe in teaching excellence. Over the last several years, M&O faculty have earned the highest teaching ratings across all departments. It is our belief that the above excellence in research and teaching relates to a culture of collaboration and intellectual synergy.

The Smith School has leading edge MBA and undergraduate programs, a rapidly expanding portfolio of executive education programs including EMBA programs in both the US and China, as well as a strong doctoral program. In the most recent surveys, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Smith Undergraduate Program as #19 (Management as #10) while Financial Times ranked the Smith MBA Program as #20 in the U.S.

Given the Smith School's location in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, faculty and staff at Smith enjoy not only a strong institutional environment but also the pleasures of living in a vibrant and leading global city which is very cosmopolitan, rich in world-class museums and the performing arts, architecturally delightful, full of greenery with the beautiful Potomac River flowing right through the city, within one to two hours of driving distance from not only beaches but also ski slopes, and home to some of the country's best public and private schools.

For full consideration, we encourage applicants to submit a complete set of materials by November 5, 2010.  Candidates should send a CV together with a brief cover letter highlighting their specific strengths relative to this position. Nominations of qualified candidates will also be appreciated. Please apply at https://jobs.umd.edu. (Refer to position # 104824 in the faculty listing)   In case you have questions, please direct them to Ms. Erica Scarpulla (escarpulla@rhsmith.umd.edu), who is administratively assisting Professor Rajshree Agarwal, Chair, Strategy Search Committee.

University of Maryland is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, and encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
