    Organization Studies

Special Issue on 'Institutions and Work'

    Guest Editors:

Tom Lawrence (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada)

Tammar Zilber (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel)

Bernard Leca, (Rouen Business School, France)

    Deadline: February 28th 2011

The notion of institutional work was introduced to embody and extend several streams of research on institutional processes. Defined as "the purposive action of individuals and organizations aimed at creating, maintaining and disrupting institutions" (Lawrence & Suddaby, 2006: 215), the idea of institutional work reflects a shift in focus from isomorphism to change (Dacin et al., 2002), deterministic effects of structures to actors' power and agency in manipulating and even transforming the institutional order (Battilana & D'Aunno, 2009; Greenwood et al., 2008), and large scale, macro-level inquiries which concentrate on structures and practices to an interest in microlevel ideational dynamics (Zilber, 2008).

The concept of institutional work also holds promise by connecting to a broader range of analytical tools and methodological avenues than have traditionally been employed to consider institutional dynamics and effects (Lawrence et al. 2009). In this special issue of Organization Studies we want to focus on the relationship between institutions and work. Two sets of questions in particular motivate this special issue

The consequences of applying the concept of work to the study of agency and institutions. The concept of work invokes notions such as effort, intentionality, coordination, roles, resistance, context and time. We aim to explore the implications of this metaphor for understanding the relationship between agency and institutions by addressing such question

as: What is institutional work? What are its limits? How does it interact with that which is not workable? On which institutional levels does work take place and how do they interact? Can "institutional work" be performed toward any sort of institution, including those so naturalized that they are 'taken for granted', and if so under which conditions? Most generally, what are the costs and benefits of employing work as a metaphor to understand the relationship between agency and institutions?

The relationship between institutional work and other forms of work, and discussions and treatments of "work" in other contexts and disciplines.

Work has been a central topic of scholarly concern for a long time and across a broad range of disciplines and approaches. We encourage research that leverages and contributes to those traditions. How, for example, do ideas such as identity work (e.g. Alvesson et al., 2008) and emotional labor (Hochschild, 1983) connect to the concept of institutional work?

What can we learn from such literatures as labor process theory (Braverman, 1974; Knights & Willmott, 1990), critical studies of work and resistance (Jermier et al., 1994), studies of the experience of work (Terkel, 1974), or gender studies and the treatment of reproductive/maintenance work and how gender as an institution is reproduced across life domains (e.g. West & Zimmerman, 1987), for example through discursive work (Butler, 1993)? Can research on institutional work learn from insights gained by looking at concepts close to the notion of work such as bricolage (Levi-Strauss, 1966)? Exploring the relationship between institutional work and others forms of work might also lead to question what is distinctive about institutional work, and to which extend it can be distinguished from other kinds of works and practices.

Our intention is not to embark on a colonial project. We do not assume that all these can or should be conceptualized as forms of institutional work. Rather, we are looking to use the concept of work to bridge between institutional studies of organization and other intellectual streams, which will help us further develop the concept of institutional work and the broader domain of institutional theory. In particular, we are interested in adding much needed critical reflections on the work of institutions within society at large, and re-locating organizations in their broad, societal and political contexts.

We welcome empirical research, as well as theoretical and methodological discussions that touch upon the potential of institutional work to reinvigorate institutional theory. We also encourage efforts to use the notion of institutional work to bridge institutional theory with other literatures and theoretical concerns within the discipline of Organization Theory and beyond.

We welcome you to what promises to be a most intensive, exciting intellectual experience.   We have both written extensively on the topic of Open Innovation (which we will define carefully during the Course), but we believe that the best work in this area is yet to come!  We have selected some readings and chapters to guide you in preparing for our two day Course.  You will get much more out of the Course if you make the time to put more into it.  Please read the assigned material carefully, and come prepared to share your questions, reflections and criticisms with your colleagues and us. Furthermore, upon registration participants should submit an abstract (1-2

pages) as well as bring one poster (A2) of their current or indented research on open innovation to be discussed with faculty and Ph.D. candidates.

We have also incorporated reasonably long breaks and lunches, so we hope that you'll have time to get to know us and each other.  While the Open Innovation research community is growing, it remains at an early stage of development.  Your passion, commitment, energy and ideas are vitally needed.  Once again, welcome!

The Center for Corporate Education (CCE), funded by the School of Business Foundation at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), is offering a winter-term, non-credit, continuing education, live, interactive, synchronous online class introducing the use of R for a variety of academic-research statistical analyses, including: inference; ANOVA; simple, multiple and logistic regression; analyzing longitudinal data; and simultaneous inference and multiple comparisons. The limited time, early sign-up cost for the 14-hour, 5 week course is $195 (student); $250 (faculty); and $295 (practitioner). This course is popular so please do not wait if you are interested. If you sign up now and your plans change, we will work to reschedule you (or refund your deposit, less $25, if that is what you prefer).

The informational (and registration) site for the AM version (in the Eastern US) is here: https://www.regonline.com/R-vcu-feb-AM

The R Project for Statistical Computing provides a comprehensive environment for statistical analysis and graphics and is unrivaled in the availability of new, cutting-edge applications. R is a very powerful system for statistical computations and graphics, and runs on Windows, UNIX and Mac computers. It may be described as a combination of a statistics package and a programming language. It is freely available for download from http://www.r-project.org/ .

We designed this course specifically for researchers and statistical workers who want to learn a powerful new software platform for conducting a variety of essential academic research statistical analyses, including: (1) the statistical graphical displays available in R; (2) simple inference; (3) analysis of variance; (4) simple and multiple regression; (5) logistic regression; (6) analyzing longitudinal data; and (7) simultaneous inference and multiple comparisons.

The number of R users was estimated at 2,000,000 in 2009 (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/08/r-you-ready-for-r/). We like to think of R as 'open source SAS.' But R is free and widely supported. It you crunch numbers for a living and you have not used R, now is a good time to start.

This course illustrates how to use R for common, research-oriented statistical analyses using generic data which is provided with or without the (optional) textbook. We will also use
R Commander, the freely-available, menu-driven, statistics-oriented visual interface to R to illustrate how to utilize the various statistical functions.

This live, interactive, synchronous online course (which has both an AM and a PM version to reach all time zones) is conducted in four separate, weekly 3-hour sessions. There is also a pre-class session  to ensure that everyone has installed R and R Commander without problems. All classes are recorded and provided to participants so, if you miss a class, you will have the recording. Also, you may switch from AM to PM (or vice versa) as space allows (although you initially sign up for one or the other). There is also information available at http://www.pls-seminars.com.

Don't wait ! Join the 'R' revolution ! You will be glad that you did ! And get an R course completion certificate in the process !

    Apologies for double postings

    Dear Colleague,

It is my pleasure to announce the publication of the first volume of the International Journal of Management and Business, IJMB.
You may view it at: http://www.iamb.net/IJMB/journal.html

What is UNIQUE about IJMB is that in addition to quality academic papers, each abstract is offered in at least 5 languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and additional optional language in which the authors are fluent.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank and to acknowledge the instrumental contribution of the Chief Editor, Dr. Meir Russ. Like any "first", it took longer than we anticipated, yet we are pleased with the product. We hope you will like it too and that it will encourage you to submit your paper for publication in the Journal.

    All the best,
    Shmuel
