AOM Annual Meeting – Montreal
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear TIM Community Members:
We have what I believe is an exciting and high quality program awaiting you in Montreal. While I hope you are able to attend many TIM sessions and that you have a fun and intellectually stimulating conference, I want to remind you of several key TIM Division program events for you to put on your schedule and to tell you about our program in general.
First let me highlight is our combined TIM Business Meeting and Social (Session 542) which will be held Sunday night from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Le Palais Des Congres: 520 AB. This year we are holding this session at a new time and date. Please come on Sunday evening to get an update on the division, to acknowledge the finalists and recipients of the best paper and best student paper awards as well as the best dissertation nominees, to ask questions and find out how you can get more involved in the division, and of course to socialize and dine with other TIM members.
On Monday morning (Session 571), we will once again have our TIM Breakfast Meeting. Before you head off to sessions, please stop by from 7:00-8:00 a.m. in Le Palais Des Congres: 520 DE to chat with TIM members in a more relaxed setting.
That afternoon, (from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in Le Palais Des Congres 516 C, session 1127) we will have our annual TIM Best Dissertation Paper Session. Come hear cutting edge, high quality research by the finalists for the best dissertation paper award.
Immediately following is the TIM Distinguished Speaker session (Session 1223, Monday 4:45-6:15). This year we are honored to feature Thomas J. Allen of MIT as our speaker. The title of his talk is "Research Methods: (Advantages and Accomplishments of Working with Home Brew)". If you are not already in the room for the Best Dissertation Paper Session, please try to arrive early to Le Palais Des Congres: 516C since this session tends to fill up quickly.
Besides these sessions, I am confident you will find many other good sessions throughout the conference. While there are several new formats to the sessions, you will find high quality throughout. The decision about which paper to put in which type of session was determined by its relatedness to other papers, not by quality.
· We have traditional paper sessions but in general you will find fewer papers per session than in previous years and more time for discussion of the papers. My goal in designing these sessions is that you will find time to discuss each paper in greater depth as well as to explore the linkages between and among them.
· A new format this year is the round–table discussion. I am very excited about the potential for these sessions. They contain some of our best papers and are in a format designed to encourage discussion. These are papers that have relatively more in common with one another and the discussion should focus on exploiting and leveraging the existing knowledge in the room to develop deeper insights into the issue.
· Another new format this year is the cross-divisional paper sessions. As you know, many topics found in technology and innovation management are also discussed in other divisions. Again, some of our best papers spanned division boundaries and were put into sessions. If I can continue the explore – exploit metaphor, my expectation is that the juxtaposition of these papers from different perspectives will lead to participants exploring their commonalities and spark an understanding into the bigger topic.
· Finally, there are developmental sessions. These are sessions for papers that have high quality which are worthy of a more focused discussion than they would receive in a traditional paper session.
So my hope is that by attending and presenting at these sessions, you will gain new ideas that you didn't have before, an increased depth to your existing knowledge, and connections to other TIM members and to the TIM community that you can build from in the future.
If you have any questions about the program, please let me know and I look forward to meeting many of you in Montreal.
Best,
Paul Olk

AoM Professional Development Workshop (Sponsors: RM, BPS, OB, OMT, TIM, ENT, ODC)
The Case Against Null Hypothesis Significance Testing: Flaws, Alternatives, and Action Plans
William H. Starbuck, University of Oregon

Bruce Thompson, Texas A & M University
Academy of Management Meeting in Montreal, Canada
Friday, August 6, 2010 at 10:15 AM – 12:15 PM
Delta Centre-Ville, Cartier A
The purpose of this workshop is to increase the awareness among management researchers of the severe limitations of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) and to introduce alternative approaches based on effect size measures and confidence intervals. NHST has been criticized by methodologists on various grounds. Their criticism suggests that in the management literature, the extensive use of NHST in quantitative management research has led to the accumulation of deceptive findings. Consequently, management journals are full of "statistically significant" results that are both too small to be practically relevant and so small that they are unlikely to be replicated by other studies. In a field that aspires to provide useful advice to managers, we need to focus on practically important effects that are robust across a wide variety of settings.
To identify practically meaningful findings, methodologists have recommended the reporting of effect sizes and confidence intervals as an alternative to NHST. Recently, approaches for estimating confidence intervals for effect size measures have also been introduced (Cummings & Finch, 2001; Kline, 2004). The application of alternatives to NHST by management researchers, however, has been limited by both a lack of sensitivity regarding the inherent problems of NHST and a limited familiarity with alternative approaches. Our two-hour workshop addresses these issues in the following three modules:
• Critique of NHST
• Alternatives to NHST
• Round-table discussion for hands-on advice
No pre-registration is required to attend this session.

Dear AOM Members,
We would like to invite you to our PDW session, "Open Innovation with Suppliers: Research Perspectives and Strategic Practices", on Saturday, Aug 7 2010 4:45PM - 7:15PM at Le Palais Des Congres in 511B.
This PDW comprises two pairs of short seed presentations and a time for small group discussion in between. Research perspective presentations will be given by Joel West (San José State University, USA) and Stephan M. Wagner (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zürich, Switzerland), while Holger Schiele (University of Twente, The Netherlands) and Frank Piller (RWTH Aachen, Germany) provide reports on strategic practices. The PDWs main target is to bring scholars from an "open innovation research" and from an "early supplier involvement in new product development" perspective together. Therefore, ample room for discussion and interaction is reserved.
Over the past two decades, the process of generation of innovations has fundamentally changed. The classical form of in-house innovations developed in the laboratory of a particular firm has given way to a more network-oriented design, firms involving several partners from different organizations – customers, competitors, suppliers, universities etc. This phenomenon has gained intensive attention by scholars and practitioners alike. Two large research streams have emerged: one stream often labled "open innovation" research and another discussing new product development issues. The first stream is largely building upon the work of Chesbrough (2003), as well as related work by von Hippel (1988, 2005) on users and other external sources of innovation. This stream considers collaboration by firms with customers and competitors to create and refine innovations. While these streams allow for contributions by suppliers to such innovation, in practice such contributions are under-researched. These researchers are more often anchored in the TIM division of the Academy of Management. The second stream of research has a focus on early supplier integration in new product development, their protagonists often being "at home" in the OM division. The two groups of researchers are dealing with one single phenomenon, though from different angles. Interestingly, they do not seem to explore the overlap very often. A recent review on early supplier involvement concluded that "chiming with the idea of open innovation" would be a fruitful avenue for the researchers in early supplier inclusion (Johnsen 2009). This PDW exactly seeks to bring researchers from the two fields together in order to discuss the overlap and explore cross-fertilization, eventually contributing to a holistic understanding of networked innovations. In order to create an open space for discussion, this PDW will built upon seed presentations from the two fields and employ the "World Café" method with small group discussion on several round tables to bring participants together.

**apologies for cross-posting**
Emerald is pleased to announce the publication of a new book that offers a fascinating insight into Peter Drucker's views on his own ideas and takes an in-depth look at the legacy left by the man who is widely recognised as the greatest management thinker of his time.
Managing People and Organizations: Peter Drucker's Legacy
Author: Guido Stein
Format: Hardback, 246 x 174mm , 180 pp
Publication date: 16 July 2010
Imprint: Emerald Group Publishing Limited
ISBN: 9780857240323
Price: £49.95
Drucker was timely and inopportune at the same time. It is clear that from his extensive, solid and continual formation there has been born a singular, and at the same time multi-faceted, philosophy, which is deliberately difficult to summarize.
Drucker was one of the first, if not the first, to discover the imminence of this far-reaching change. Precisely because he is not a specialist, he was able to perceive details and nuances that had been missed by the great gurus of management. This is why Drucker is considered to be the forerunner of modern management, as well as other concepts. This book shows the lesser-known side of Peter Drucker as far as his views on his own ideas are concerned. Drucker is most commonly thought of as a management theoretician; undoubtedly this is the most well known dimension of his work. However, Drucker's aim was also to write about man in his (man's own) social context. Guido Stein elucidates Peter Drucker's thinking in a way that its relevance for today and tomorrow can be fully comprehended. He challenges the reader to engage personally in deep reflection as opposed to finding a new management "solution" or quick fixes for problems of the day.

Praise for the book
"Peter Drucker will always be relevant; we should thank Guido Stein for reminding us of this and for bringing us Drucker's ideas undistorted. In these times when the leading business schools of the world focus on the relevance and applicability of corporate knowledge, the thinking of Peter Drucker once again becomes the undisputed reference for those working in this field." – Pedro Nueno, IESE professor
****
"The author is sure to become a classic of business literature." – Actualidad Económica
****
"In a crisis-ridden world we need to rediscover management as a purposeful function beyond short term objectives and profits. Guido Stein's book contributes to establish orientation and meaning. He achieves this by masterfully re-tracing the fundamental ideas and concepts of Peter F. Drucker, thus making them accessible to the reader in a compact but never superficial way. Guido Stein elucidates Peter Drucker's thinking in a way that its relevance for today and tomorrow can be fully comprehended. He challenges the reader to engage personally in deep reflection as opposed to finding a new management "solution" or quick fixes for problems of the day. I would hope that this book will help experienced managers and executives to rediscover Peter Drucker and above all that it will find its way to the young generation, who are keen to develop a new understanding of management's role in 21st century society." – Richard Straub, Founder and President of the Peter Drucker Society Europe
****
"Guido Stein sets out in wonderful detail how Drucker's timeless insights have come to dominate management thinking - even when managers themselves do not realise they are operating under his influence. I cannot do better than Drucker's own response to Prof Stein's work: it is both profound and scholarly. You could not wish for a better introduction to Drucker's work." - Stefan Stern, Financial Times Management writer
