The OBTC Doctoral Institute - A Priceless Gift for Your Doctoral Students and ABDs

Do your favorite doctoral students and ABD faculty a big favor - steer them on to the Doctoral Institute (DI) at the Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference (OBTC).  The DI will be held  June 9-11, 2008 at <st1:placename w:st="on">Babson</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype> (<st1:city w:st="on">Wellesley</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">MA</st1:state> - just outside of <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:city>), with the full OBT Conference to follow, June 11-14.  The intensive two-day DI experience is focused on
students developing skills to balance the demands of teaching, research, and their personal lives.  The 2008 DI will feature Drs. Richard Boyatzis of Case Western, Amy Edmondson of Harvard, and Denise Rousseau of Carnegie Mellon. The sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Tim Peterson of Texas A&M with mentorship for students provided by Dr. Amy Kenworthy-U'Ren of Bond U.

Here is the link to formal DI announcement and information:

    http://www.obtc.org/doctoralinstitute.asp

Past participants have formed a lasting network of colleagues through the DI and have left the conference immensely gratified.

I hope you will pass along the link to this priceless experience that will help later-stage doctoral students and current ABD faculty at your institution to launch successful careers.  Better yet, arrange for your school to pay or contribute to their tuition, which covers all costs to both the Institute and the four-day OBT Conference itself, one of the oldest and most valuable forums for management pedagogy in the world.  You can check out the 2008 Conference website at
    www.obtc.org.

I hope I'll see you there too!  Once again, the DI is June 9-11 and the OBTConference follows on June 11-14.

P.S.  All DI participants become presenters of a self-designed workshop at the conference later in the week.  This may encourage your school's keeper of development funds to underwrite the event.

My best wishes for a prosperous, learning-filled 2008,
    Magid Mazen, Ph.D.

    ABOUT ABW:

Academic Business World (ABW) sponsors an annual international conference for the exchange of research ideas and practices within the three domains listed below (business disciplines, learning, and administration). The aim of the Academic Business World International Conferences is to provide a forum for the discussion of research within business and reference disciplines in education and the social sciences as well as research and experiences in learning and administration in higher education. We wish to promote inclusiveness in research by offering a peer-reviewed venue for the discussion of research in early stages as well as research that may differ from 'traditional' paradigms. A secondary but important objective of each conference is to encourage the cross pollination of ideas by bringing professors from multiple disciplines and backgrounds together for social and intellectual interaction.

    PARTICIPATION:

If you are interested in moderating a session or reviewing submitted papers, please contact Dr. Edd R. Joyner (Conference Chair) at eddjoyner@charter.net

    PAPERS:

Academic Business World seeks the submission of papers in all of the following three domains:

    BUSINESS DISCIPLINES DOMAIN

Papers in all traditional areas of business (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Management, Marketing, etc.) as well as any of the reference disciplines are solicited, with particular emphasis on papers in early development stages and papers involved with non-traditional paradigms.

    LEARNING DOMAIN

Learning oriented papers that describe new or innovative practices in classroom, laboratory, online, face-to-face, distance learning, or other learning environments in higher education are encouraged. Manuscripts that develop a more theoretical focus on teaching/learning are also desired. The discipline involved (accounting, engineering, art, education, etc) should not be the main focus, but rather the primary focus should be on the learning technique/practice.

    ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION DOMAIN

Administration oriented papers that focus on new or innovative practices in the operation of any academic unit in higher education are wanted. Topics may include: adjunct vs. full-time issues; budget equity with other units; any accreditation issue; finding good faculty; teaching vs. research issues; assessing programs, faculty, students; academic freedom issues; and others. Please do not view this list as exhaustive; papers in all areas of academic administration are sought.

    REVIEW PROCESS:

All papers will be blind reviewed by three or more peer reviewers. In support of our stated goal of inclusiveness, the targeted acceptance rate is 75-80 percent. Authors will normally be notified of the status of their papers within 2-weeks of submission. Accepted articles will be published in the refereed conference proceedings.

    ABSTRACTS AND PRESENTATION OUTLINES:

While only full papers are eligible for publications in the Journals listed below, Abstracts and Presentation Outlines are welcome for presentation at the conference.

    JOURNALS ASSOCIATED WITH ABWIC:

The best papers, as rated by reviewers and receiving a Best Paper Award, will be published (subject to possible revision to meet publication standards) in one of the following journals:

International Journal of the Academic Business World (IJABW). IJABW is a peer-reviewed journal in it's first year of publication and has been accepted for listing in a forthcoming Cabell's directory of publishing opportunities. (ISSN: Applied for)

The Journal of Learning in Higher Education (JLHE). JLHE is a peer-reviewed journal in its third year of publication and is listed in the 7th and 8th Editions of Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Educational Psychology and Administration. (ISSN: 1936-346X)

How are opportunities to generate economic profits formed?  How do they come into being and assume an identity?  Do the origins of opportunities have an impact on how they are exploited?  Do different types of opportunities have different impacts on industries, on technological innovation, or on society as a whole?  While scholars have asked a broad range of questions about entrepreneurship, questions about the relationship between opportunities, organizations, and entrepreneurship remain under examined.

The purpose of this special issue of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal is to focus attention on the causes and consequences of opportunity formation and exploitation.  We aim to sharpen scholars' collective understanding of how entrepreneurial opportunities are formed, how they are exploited, and how the combination of opportunity formation and exploitation affects the survival and growth of new ventures.  Some questions central to this research effort include:

    1.                   What types of environments spawn economically viable opportunities?

    2.                    What characterizes a "promising opportunity?"

    3.                   Can the opportunity formation/exploitation process limit entrepreneurial efforts?

    4.                   Do some opportunities require organizing to exploit early-mover advantages, and if so, how viable are these firms?

    5.                   How do organizations learn over time about an opportunity space?

    6.                   How do successful ventures re-interpret their purpose, re-position themselves, and re-organize to sustain alignment between the organization and the opportunities they seek to form and exploit?

    7.                    How do the origins of an opportunity and the process of forming an organization to exploit an opportunity interact?

    8.                   How do human skills and collective competences both influence and emerge from the opportunity formation/exploitation process?  How are organizational capabilities forged as a firm assumes a more coherent identity?

    9.                   When and how does the formation/exploitation process lead from flexibility to commitment?

    10.                How do successful nascent enterprises reduce ambiguity without committing themselves to paths that later prove too hazardous?  How do they develop and institutionalize productive routines when the definition of their niche and boundaries are moving targets?

    11.                How does an emerging enterprise locate itself in a web of social connections, forge the social capital it needs to survive, and legitimate its existence?

    12.                How do entrepreneurs and/or entrepreneurial teams form opportunities, and choose among them?

    13.                How does the choice and definition of an opportunity affect the formation of an organization intended to exploit it?

    14.                What is the process by which nascent organizations exploit initial opportunities?

These questions all focus on forming and exploiting opportunities that result in the creation of organizations and the effects of opportunities and organizations on  industries and society.  By directing attention to the specific challenge of organizing to form and exploit an opportunity, we wish to highlight the unique contribution that strategic entrepreneurship can make to the broader, inter-disciplinary research conversation about entrepreneurship.

In the newly evolving tradition of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, we welcome both empirical and theoretical papers that seek to break new ground and move beyond normal science.  We especially encourage papers that bring together multiple strands of research, multiple disciplinary perspectives, and multiple methodologies in addressing these, and related, questions.  We actively promote submissions that aim to launch new lines of inquiry, re-direct the trajectory of a current theory stream, and/or challenge long-held assumptions and empirical findings.

The due date for submissions is April 1, 2008.  Please submit papers to:
