    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear Colleagues:

NSF issued a new solicitation on Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems yesterday.  Proposals are due 2 June.  Further information and a link to the solicitation itself can be found at:
    http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503256&org=NSF&sel_org=N
    SF&from=fund

This is a wonderful opportunity for US-based social scientists working on topics pertinent to virtual organizations, broadly construed.  A synopsis and list of some potential topics is provided below.  These
should not be construed as complete lists.  Additional pertinent research topics are welcome, so long as the work would yield sound, generalizable advances in knowledge.

We look forward to receiving your strong proposals.

Feel free to distribute this notice widely.

    Best regards.

    Synopsis

A virtual organization is a group of individuals whose members and resources may be dispersed geographically, but who function as a coherent unit through the use of cyber infrastructure. Virtual
organizations are increasingly central to the science and engineering projects funded by the National Science Foundation. Focused investments in sociotechnical analyses of virtual organizations are necessary to
harness their full potential and the promise they offer for discovery and learning.

The Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems (VOSS) program supports scientific research directed at advancing the understanding of what constitutes an effective virtual organization and under what conditions virtual organizations can enable and enhance scientific, engineering, and education production and innovation. Levels of analysis may include (but are not limited to) individuals, groups, organizations, and institutional arrangements. Disciplinary perspectives may include (but are not limited to) anthropology, complexity sciences, computer and information sciences, decision and management sciences, economics,
engineering, organization theory, organizational behavior, social and industrial psychology, public administration, and sociology. Research methods may span a broad variety of qualitative and quantitative
methods, including (but not limited to): ethnographies, surveys, simulation studies, experiments, comparative case studies, and network analyses.

VOSS funded research must be grounded in theory and rooted in empirical methods. It must produce broadly applicable and transferable results that augment knowledge and practice of virtual organizations as a modality. VOSS does not support proposals that aim to implement or evaluate individual virtual organizations.

Critical challenges and prominent themes that scientific inquiries might address under VOSS may include (but are not limited to):

    * Units and frameworks of analysis-both social and technical: Social units of analysis may be individuals, teams, scientific disciplines, individual or multiple organizations. Technical units of analysis may include specific tools or objects, virtual or immersive environments or "worlds," specialized niches, or collections of such virtual environments. What are the conceptual and comparative frameworks of analyzing virtual organizations? What theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches can be applied, what need to be adapted, what need to be developed?

    * Organizational life cycles: What are the stages and causes of virtual organization evolution, including, for example, formation of new organizations, organizational change or transformation, and organizational crisis or decline?  How do they vary across task, domain, population, and/or stage of organization lifecycle?
    * Production and innovation: What technological, social, and legal arrangements support intellectual production and innovation in virtual organizations? How do these arrangements interact? How do they vary
across task, domain, population, and/or stage of organization lifecycle?

    * Organizational structure, scope, and scaling: Are there levels of connectivity, diversity, and interactivity at which scientific production and innovation can be optimized in virtual organizations? How does optimization on these dimensions vary across task, domain, population, and/or stage of organization lifecycle?
    * Individual and collective motivation: What are the social and technological barriers to and/or enablers of participation in a virtual organization? What are the social and technological forces of coordination, competition, and/or collaboration? How do these forces vary across task, domain, population, and/or stage of organization lifecycle?

    * Management, Governance, and Leadership: What are models of governance agreement, and what should they address? How do they interact with the cultures, structures and arrangements governing the
participating individuals and institutions? How do virtual organization and participants understand, negotiate, and prioritize multiple and what might be conflicting memberships?

    * Measurement and assessment: What are the tests of efficiency, equity, and effectiveness that can be applied to different types of virtual organizations?  How do these conditions vary across task, domain, population, and/or stage of organization lifecycle?

    * Comparative performance: Under what conditions do virtual organizations outperform co-located organizations? What tasks or processes can be done or done better by virtual organizations that cannot be done or done as well in co-located organizations, and vice versa? What are the advantages and isadvantages of technological-mediation? Under what conditions (and how) might virtual organizations be instrumented to advance our understanding of certain phenomena better than co-located organizations?

Call for Papers - International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development (IJIRD)
    Special Issue on: "Community-based Entrepreneurship"
    Deadline: 30 June 2008

    https://www.inderscience.com/browse/callpaper.php?callID=899

Guest Editors: Prof. Vanessa Ratten, Duquesne University, USA
Prof. Leo Dana, University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Prof. Isabell Welpe, University of Munich, Germany
Prof. Mary Han, Ryerson University, Canada

Since Johannisson and Nilsson's (1989) seminal paper on community-based entrepreneurship, the literature on how regional development is facilitated by community interaction has grown. The increasing sentiment of people and businesses worldwide to "act locally but think globally" has meant that community-based
    entrepreneurship is becoming more important in encouraging businesses and public policy practitioners to focus on the significance of people working together to facilitate regional development (Kapelus, 2002;
Lyons, 2002). In this special issue, we define community-based entrepreneurship as "a community acting corporately as both entrepreneur and enterprise in pursuit of the common good" (Peredo and Chrisman, 2006:310). Thus, community-based entrepreneurship involves a process through which new enterprises are created and operate in a communities existing social structure (Peredo and Chrisman, 2006). The economic and social role of community-based entrepreneurship has been recognised by a growing number of disciplines, including sociology, management and urban studies (e.g.,Bull and Winter, 1991; Johannisson
and Nilsson, 1989; Light and Karageorgis, 1994; Mezias and Kuperman, 2001; Selsky and Smith, 1994). Community-based entrepreneurship is encouraged through personal networking that influence local venturing processes and regional development (Johannisson and Nilsson, 1989).

The special issue takes a multi-disciplinary perspective to help examine the role of community-based entrepreneurship in the international context. Thus, its aim is to study how community-based
entrepreneurship is encouraging regional development as people become part of a number of different communities worldwide. We are looking for new theoretical insights and empirical studies that will
contribute to the literature on community-based entrepreneurship.

    Subject Coverage
Papers should address research questions in the field, including but not limited to the following topics

    * Market conditions for community-based entrepreneurship (openness of markets, regulations, transparency of market and resource mobilisation).
    * The importance of cognitions and emotions in community-based entrepreneurship.
    * The role of human resource management practices and in community-based entrepreneurship.
    * Public perception of community-based entrepreneurship.
    * The antecedents and consequences of family participation in various aspects of community-based entrepreneurship.
    * How has community-based entrepreneurship influenced regional development in global contexts and will this change in the future?
    * Comparative differences in community-based entrepreneurship by countries, city, ethnic/national subgroup, sector and periods.
    * The role of social capital and social networks in community-based entrepreneurship.
    * The role of technological innovation in community-based entrepreneurship.
    * The importance of communities for the perception, evaluation and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities.

    International Journal of Technoentrepreneurship

Special Research Forum Call for Papers:  Innovation, Market, and Organizations

The International Journal of Technoentrepreneurship (IJTE) is pleased to announce a call for papers for the special issue on Innovation, Market, and Organizations. The guest editor is Srikanth Paruchuri, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename></st1:place>.

The goal of the paper is to attract research and papers on an important issue of the interaction among innovation, market, and organization. Long time ago, Schumpeter posed an important question about the organizational origin of innovation: do innovations origin in small vs. large firms? Prior research, for example, has examined if the competence-destroying (and competence-enhancing) innovations are generated in small, innovative firms or in large firms.  While this research is mostly geared toward understanding the origins of innovation, it has not given much less importance to another critical link, that many of the founders of the small firms would have gained expertise by working in large organizations (or academic institutions) just before (or while) starting their venture. In some cases of new ventures, these same large organizations (or academic institutions) even play an important role by financing the ventures. These issues suggest a much more complicated interaction among innovation, market, and organization.

This special issue tries to extend our understanding of these complex issues. To this end, we invite papers that try to uncover these complicated relations among innovation, market, and organization. We interpret innovations to include wide range of innovations: product, process, service, organizational, and technological innovations. We invite papers that study these relations at various levels of analysis including team, organization, industry, and population.  We would also like to invite research that uses R&D consortia, alliances and joint ventures as links between innovations and organizations.

Papers could include either theoretical or empirical research. Some themes in this issue include but are not limited to the following.

    * Do innovations follow or precede venture formation?
    * Do entrepreneurs' prior organizations finance new ventures? If so, what are the antecedents and consequences of this financing?
    * How do ventures develop their own research capabilities independent of their founders' capabilities? Is this process influenced by venture's relationships with other organizations?
    * What role do R&D consortia, alliances and joint ventures play in generating innovations within a new venture? And, are these roles of consortia, alliances, and joint ventures different when a large firm forms these ties?

Taking into consideration the international readership, we invite research based in diverse empirical settings. These settings could be based within a national boundary or across different national boundaries. Studies could compare and contrast different cultures of innovation and entrepreneurship, or focus on a specific context and explore rich relationships within that context.

Considering there is so little in the practical world to guide managers, this special issue is also intended to influence the practice of management. Consequently, we invite research that is grounded solidly in theory (and in empirical methodology for empirical papers), and also request the authors to highlight the implications for managers. Specifically, authors should shed light on the principles of management that their research contributes.

Manuscripts must follow IJTE standard requirements as specified in the "Style Guide for Authors." Cover letters must specify that the paper is intended for the special issue.

    All details are available at:
    www.inderscience.com/ijte

Papers must be received no later than May 31st, 2008 with a publication of the Special Issue scheduled for the end of 2008.

    Call for Papers

Special Issue of the International Journal of Organizational Analysis

Shaping Our Unscripted Future with Service-Learning: When Technology, Globalism, and Community Engagement Collide

Technological advances are increasing global communications and fuelling paradigm shifts. They are influencing all aspects of organizational life. As environments change, many organizational members are left with only what is familiar to them – data reflecting the scripts of the past. However, these familiar understandings typically provide limited guidance on how to proceed into the future.

To move forward most productively, organizational members need to acknowledge and embrace the increasingly unscripted future – a shared, unpredictable, and dynamic future comprised of both known

and unknown consequences of global, technological, and economic change. With this step, the important task of shaping the future can be addressed. This, our unscripted future, is all-encompassing. The consequences for higher education will affect students, faculty members, and administrators alike. Paradigmatic shifts are already in motion. As accrediting bodies, international competitors, and new technologies prescribe factors for success, major curricula changes are occurring across all degree structures.

One of the most dramatic changes in educational practice that has been accelerated, if not caused, by the shifts in technological innovation and globalism can be seen in the international expansion of service-learning. Service-learning is an educational initiative that assists in the development of human intellectual capital via real-world, course-based student community engagement experiences. Service-learning programs offer students the opportunity to foster sensemaking in unpredictable environments.

The goal of this special issue is to provide IJOA readers, as well as service-learning authors and practitioners, with an overview of the application and outcomes of service-learning as a teaching tool in today's rapidly changing environment. This special issue will explore the strengths and challenges of service-learning practice in the context of our unscripted future – with a specific focus on the interrelationships between technological advances, global access and interest, and community engagement. Topics will include not only how service-learning is being applied as a tool to explore and understand complex environments but also why service-learning is being used in terms of leveraging educational opportunities into desired outcomes for students, universities, and community members. Our goal is to expand the current literature in directions that reflect today's global, diverse, interconnected, and uncertain organizational environments.

    We encourage submissions from:

Organizational researchers and practitioners from across the disciplines who are actively engaged in cutting edge service-learning applications with a focus on new technological and/or international applications – encompassing both stand-alone programs and those involving partners from different global locations.

Practitioners who work in non-traditional organizational disciplines and from those who are using advanced technological applications to heighten the quality of service learning programs.

Articles should be 4,000 - 6,000 words in length with an appropriate title. Manuscripts should be set out using 12-point Times New Roman font, double-line spacing throughout, with single-spaces between sentences, and 1 inch (25mm) margins. A brief autobiographical note should be supplied including full name, affiliation, e-mail address and full international contact details. For manuscript submission guidelines, see: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/ijoa/notes.jsp

The submission deadline is September 26, 2008. Authors are strongly encouraged to contact either of the two guest editors, Amy Kenworthy-U'Ren (akenwort@bond.edu.au) or Laurie DiPadova-Stocks  (ldipadovastocks@park.edu), to discuss possible submissions.  Early submissions are encouraged.

    - Research Question

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    TIM COLLEAGUE:

    RESEARCH QUESTION

I am doing some research on work motivation in the context of what I have been calling "large-scale collaborative creativity" (LSCC) -- by which I mean situations where individual tasks require simultaneously (a) high levels of creativity and (b) close coordination with a large number of other creative contributors. I wonder if anyone can point me to descriptions of work and creativity in this setting.

    Some background to my question:

Using the term "large scale", I'm thinking of the design of a new generation automobile or airplane or software system -- versus small scale projects where the team can coordinate using face-to-face mechanisms. Using the term "collaborative creativity", I am referring to projects where there is a lot of interdependence among components -- versus situations where the degree of modularity of the system is high and contributors do not have to worry about the impact of their component's design on other components' performance.

In these LSCC settings, contributors have to take into consideration not only the work of others in their immediate design team (where the small-scale of their interdependence can be managed by informal "mutual adjustment"), but also the work of many others outside that immediate team (which requires more formalized coordination mechanisms such as formal authority and formal design standards and requirements).

What most intrigues me is that to create a really first-rate product of this kind, component-level engineers need to embrace -- rather than merely reluctantly conform to -- these formal constraints.

I'm looking for first-hand accounts of work in this kind of setting, where contributors describe what it's like to experience these "constraints" not as impediments to their creative autonomy, but as stimuli for creative solutions that contribute to the overall effort.

Happy to compile any suggestions and make them available to others.

    Thanks in advance

    Dear Potential Research Participant,

You are encouraged to participate in the cognitive development research introduced here (survey links listed below).  It is doctoral dissertation research.  This study centers on executive development, specifically to understand complex reasoning and how it develops.  I hope, first, to further our understanding of the way that the executive reasons about problems and, thereby, facilitate the discussion among members of our profession.  Second, you may develop greater personal awareness of stage-like executive development as a result of your participation in this research.  Third, this research may shed a practical light on development is

The research instrument that I am using is a questionnaire. It centers on a theorized assignment preparation interaction between an executive and their subordinate. Through the evidenced reasoning reflected in your responses I expect to learn the relative level of complexity at which these deliberations are executed. I hope to answer the question, As the executive rises in the corporate hierarchy is there a concomitant increase in level of complex reasoning ability? And, what are the common developmental experiences of the development?

Please answer all parts of this questionnaire. Read each section and answer the questions in the order given. Do not go to the following section before you have finished the previous section. This is not a test of your ability as an individual. Rather, I wish to know how executives, in general, reason about the issues presented here. The order of answering is essential to this study about executive reasoning. What is most important is not only what you consider to be good, but the reasons for your choices. Therefore, it is essential that you state your reasons why you make the choices that you make.

I value your participation and thank you for your commitment of time, energy, and effort. Your responses will be considered as anonymous and confidential. If you have any questions about any aspect of this study or your involvement, I can be reached at my home telephone number (919) 676-8660, on my mobile (919) 522-5448, or via email at AIOEresearch@aol.com. You may also contact the supervising faculty if you have questions or concerns related to your participation in this study. The supervising faculty contact information has been copied at the bottom of this letter. If at any time you have questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant, contact the Field
