Dear all,
Please find below information on a PDW on the Origins of Competitive Advantage at the Academy next August.

We are now soliciting papers from authors doing new work related in some way to if, when, or/and how firms can actually make money from resources and capabilities, especially if & when firms can profit from investments in new technologies.

The submission deadline is the 1st of July.
Best regards, and sorry for any cross-postings!

AoM Annual Meeting 2008: Professional Development Workshop

WHEN AND HOW CAN FIRMS MAKE MONEY FROM RESOURCES? REVISITING THE ORIGINS OF COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Central to the origins of competitive advantage is the question of how firms can acquire resources and capabilities at a cost inferior to their value-creating ability. This issue was raised just over 20 years ago by Jay Barney, who suggested that luck or superior foresight were necessary to profit from valuable resources and capabilities. Since then, although external linkages have become more
important for understanding resource acquisition/access and accumulation/reconfiguration, our knowledge of how, when, and why firms might profit from such resources and capabilities has not developed as speedily.

Could we therefore say more about when and how firms can make money from resources and capabilities? Are luck and superior expectations the only mechanisms for profitably acquiring resources? Can firms strategize in factor markets? How do real firms behave in strategic factor markets? How do firms and entrepreneurs cope with or exploit expectational asymmetries? What settings and methods might be useful for testing and extending the theory? Can insights from research into entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, executive compensation and mobility, M&As, or other areas shed new light on these questions?

This two-part PDW thus seeks to revitalize interest in the origins of competitive advantage, while providing an opportunity for interested scholars to develop innovative new research projects in this area. The first interactive session will allow participants to meet and engage other scholars with interests in the area, while the second paper-development session will provide successful authors with high quality feedback on new research projects. (Confirmed panelists for the general session include Jay Barney, Rachel Croson, Allison Mackey, Joe Mahoney, and Rich Makadok. To register, please send an email to
FactorMarketPDW@yahoo.com.)

We are now soliciting submissions for the afternoon paper development session. The session will provide a wonderful opportunity to receive high-quality developmental feedback, for authors doing work in some way related to if, how, and when firms can make money from resources. Theoretical, empirical, and/or methodological contributions are welcome, and we encourage submissions from multiple perspectives and/or theoretical traditions. Since we also seek to stimulate new research, we
will be happy to receive either full work-in-progress papers, or well-developed paper proposals. Nevertheless, in order to guarantee high-quality feedback, we will only be able to accept a limited number of submissions, and as such, paper (or proposal) quality and creativity are important.

The submission deadline is July 1st 2008, and successful authors will be notified by mid-July. Submissions should be sent by email to
FactorMarketPDW@yahoo.com. Full paper submissions should be about 25 double-spaced pages all-inclusive, while proposal submissions should have at least 3 single-spaced pages of text.

You can find more background and details in the attached flyer.

We look forward to your submissions and participation!

"COGNITION IN THE ROUGH" 2008

Are you working on cognition-related research? Would you like to discuss your work with major scholars in the field? Now is the time to prepare for the 11th annual "COGNITION IN THE ROUGH" workshop to be held at the Academy of Management conference in Anaheim this August.

The Cognition in the Rough workshop (CIR) provides an excellent opportunity to discuss your research in an informal, collegial roundtable setting. Each roundtable will have 2-3 scholars and 2-3 researchers, allowing plenty of time for discussion. Regardless of whether you are a more senior or more junior researcher, this workshop offers you an invaluable opportunity to receive detailed feedback from scholars who are often editors or on the editorial board of top journals.

In particular, many past CIR participants have emphasized how much they have benefited from their participation in the workshop in terms of developing their theoretical models and their planned methodology. This feedback has been instrumental in helping them further develop and polish their research for publication in top academic journals. Whether this is your first major research project or your fiftieth,
this is a chance you won't want to miss! We are very pleased that the following scholars agreed to participate:

Fran Ackermann, Andrea Casey, Colin Eden, Dov Eden, Mark Fenton-O'Creevy, Marlena Fiol, Raghu Garud, Gerard Hodgkinson, Susan Houghton, George Huber, Lynn Isabella, Theresa Lant, Mark Martinko,
Stephen Mezias, Frances Milliken, Chet Miller, Rhonda Reger, Majken Schultz, Mary Waller

Sponsored by the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division at the annual Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, the workshop will be held on Sunday, August 10th from 8:30 AM - 12 PM.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Organization Science

Special Issue on "The Cultural Construction of Organizational Life"

Submission deadline: May 30, 2008
Submissions open May, 2008

Guest editors:

Tina Dacin, Queen's University,
tdacin@business.queensu.ca
Klaus Weber, Northwestern University, klausweber@northwestern.edu

Cultural approaches to organization have experienced a renaissance in recent years. The resurgent interest in the cultural construction of organizational life can be seen as a "second wave" of cultural analysis in organization science. The first wave of cultural approaches to organizations paralleled a broader cultural turn in the social sciences in the 1980s, and sparked interest in collective meaning systems at the level of groups, organizations, industries, fields or countries. An important initial contribution of cultural analysis was to conceptualize contextual constraints on thought and behavior, be it in the form of organizational cultures, national differences or field level isomorphism.

The current "second wave" of cultural research goes beyond this focus on culture as constraining context, by drawing on recent advances in cultural analysis in sociology, anthropology, psychology, history and linguistics. Two differences illustrate the resulting expanded agenda for the cultural analysis of organizations: First, culture is construed as both a pragmatic resource and as a contextual constraint. Individuals and firms use cultural materials in strategic ways, but also face questions of power, skill, audience and variation in the negotiation of meaning. Second, culture is seen as more constitutive than contextual, located inside rather than outside organizing practices. Ideas, moralities and symbols enable and mediate core processes of organizing, so that questions of how culture is produced, transmitted and applied become salient. This approach to cultural analysis promises to transcend or at least re-cast traditional distinctions, such as cultural versus economic explanations, institutional structure versus individual agency, fabricated versus genuine communication, to name a few.

In this special issue, we seek to advance this "second wave" of cultural analysis. We take an expansive view of culture to include a range of symbolic formations and resources, including meaning systems, routines and traditions, frames and logics, codes, language, images and objects. We welcome theoretical and empirical papers at any level of analysis and using any methodology. We especially encourage submissions that address fundamental questions about the nature and role of culture in organizations and fields, suggest innovative designs and methodologies, or re-examine puzzles in existing research that have not traditionally been examined from a cultural lens.

Possible topics include but are not limited to questions of:
1) Identity and meaning making: For example, processes and resources of identity construction, authenticity and skillful self-presentation.
2) The production of culture, myth making and story-telling: For example, what role do leaders, organizations, the state and the media take in shaping collective understandings? What tactics and structures facilitate this task?
3) Tradition and customs: For example, the crafting and experience of organizational heritage, the role of customs and rituals in cultural maintenance and change.
4) The evolution and transformation of central cultural symbols and ideas in organizations: For example, the semiosis of key words, concepts and artifacts, evolutionary models of emergence and change in language and codes over time.
5) The cultural construction of markets, competition and industries: For example, how do language games, social codes and frames shape competitive and population dynamics?
6) Power, control, and contestation: For example, the interaction between organizations and public discourse in regulating corporate behavior, dynamics of symbolic management, the politics of culture within and between organizations.
7) Technology and entrepreneurship: For example, how stories and cultural understandings shape technology trajectories and entrepreneurial careers, the strategic use of culture by entrepreneurs, the role of cultural processes in managing R&D projects and alliances.
8) Strategy crafting: For example, cultural variation in strategy making, rhetorical tropes and the discourse of strategy.
9) Organizations as social enterprises: For example, how do cultural practices affect the social and economic good created by organizations? How are objectives, performance and worth constructed in the first place?
10) Globalization and culture: For example, processes of hegemony, hybridization, translation and bricolage and their implication for organizational practices and countries.

This list of questions and topic areas is suggestive rather than exhaustive. We are open to a wide range of approaches that articulate clear and significant contributions to theory, methods and practice.

Submission process: Manuscripts must be submitted by May 30, 2008.
Manuscripts should be submitted through the Organization Science web site (
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/orgsci) indicating that the work is intended for this special issue.

Authors of accepted papers will be required to submit a short abstract and the full-length paper (for paper sessions) by November 1st, 2008. Presenting authors must register to the conference by September 1st, 2008. The conference program, with a detailed schedule of sessions and events will be released in mid November, 2008.
ISC Best Paper Award

A select group of papers which received the highest evaluation in the review process will be nominated as finalists for the ISC Best Paper Award. The finalists will be asked to submit a full paper for an additional round of blind-review process by a distinguished panel of reviewers. The selected winner(s) of the ISC Best Paper Award will receive a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize sponsored by Rotem Strategy, an Israeli-based strategy consulting firm. The wining paper will be announced in the concluding session of ISC.

Conference format
The conference will start with a reception and a special session which will be held on the evening of December 28th. Papers will be assigned to parallel sessions based on common themes, scheduled on December 29 and 30. Each author whose paper is accepted for presentation in a paper session will be given 15 minutes to present the paper. Following the presentations, designated discussants who have carefully read the papers will present their main comments and provide suggestions for improving the papers and getting them ready for publication. Discussants will also offer an integration of the papers presented in their sessions, which will be followed by questions from and general discussion by the audience. In addition, the conference will feature themed poster sessions which will offer authors the opportunity to interactively present their papers and discuss them with the audience. The conference will also feature keynote speeches and special sessions to be noted in the conference program.

Sport is a global industry that places emphasis on the role of team performance (Schnytzer and Weinberg, 2008). Most types of sport involve team work whether it is on the field or in the workplace. The composition
of a team will influence its performance (Higgs, Plewnia and Ploch, 2005). It is important for all types of industries to learn from teamwork (Pineda and Lerner, 2006). As the worldwide economy becomes more competitive it is important to understand how organizations can deliver superior value through focusing on team-based performance (Sumanski, Kolenc and Markic, 2007).

The aim of this Special Issue in Team Performance Management is to examine in more detail what makes a good team and how both academics and practitioners can help their teams improve. Consistent with the objectives of the journal, this special issue is interested in how to build high performance teams in the sports context. Professional and amateur sporting teams and organizations are useful to analyze to see how they enhance teamwork and performance for their members (Ross, 2008). All different types of research paradigms including both empirical and conceptual papers are welcome in this special issue. The special issue will focus on team performance management in the sports industry and includes, but is not
limited to, the following topics:

. The role of innovation to team performance management
. Sports marketing and entrepreneurial best practices in team performance
. Challenges of working with global teams in sporting clubs
. The role of social networks to develop sporting teams
. Ethics and social responsibility in sporting teams
. Targeting and segmentation strategies in sports-based team management
. Positioning and competitive advantage in sports teams
. How managers of sporting organizations successfully manage their team's performance
. Drivers and motivations of a successful sporting team
. Organizational work teams in sporting clubs
. How professional sporting organizations reward and compensate for good team performance
. The role of team-based performance in sports
. The secrets of successful team building and development in sport
. Managerial examples of effective sporting teams
. Human resource development in sports teams
. The impact of team-work for sales managers in sports organizations
. The role of organizational change and managerial development for sports teams

Manuscripts must be received by September 30th 2008. All manuscripts will undergo a double-blind review process. Manuscripts submitted to then Special Issue of Team Performance Management should not have been previously published nor be submitted to any other journals during the review process. Darlene's quick translation of the original French (French version follows)

We are pleased to present to you the Institute European for the Management and the Prevention of Stress. The world economies are sources of stress, uncertainties, falling self-confidence and lack of confidence in others. They represent also a chance of success, of blooming. The idea to help the companies, the organizations and the people who work there to fight against this plague which stress has germinated in our spirit for a long time, because the consequences of stress are many and heavy. Institutes of scientific research work on the origins of the stress, on its consequences on man, the manner of evaluating it, of fighting it, and on its effects on health at work. The question of the costs of work-related stress is tackled very little in Europe, but already an awakening exists. The bond towards methods of prevention, with a particular and concrete glance on the question of Management is approached, even if in a rather surface way.

The IEMAPS (Institute for the Management and the Prevention of Stress) proposes to devote all its energy to help the companies, the organizations, the managers, and the other actors to treat in-depth questions of stress. Our approach to the question of stress in the company and the organizations is concrete and pragmatic. We work mainly in two directions: - towards each person to help to install tools and a new glance which will enable him to appreciably increase resistance levels to stress. - towards the Management of the Company and the Organization, so that the values of Man are again driving, creative performance and wellbeing.

We will not be able to change the economic environment in which the companies and the organizations bathe, but we can bring a different, more serene and perennial manner to consider the Company, the Organization, Management and the Men who work there. And so "more values" was synonymous with "more performance"? We work to show that what is possible. The IEMAPS wants to address all those which feel concerned by the question of work stress: scientists, organizations, companies, managers, women and men. We want to create a dynamics which will make it possible to throw footbridges between those which work better knowing stress and its effects, those which suffer from it, those where stress costs too much money, too much energy, and those who act to control it. We will gradually set up spaces for your expressions, questions, and intervenions. This platform which is the IEMAPS is yours, provided that you, your vision and your objectives combine in the direction of "better living" with work and in the personal life.

Please note that the website for IEMAPS is in French and the original posting that follows was received in French. http://www.iemaps.eu/

- Research Question

TIM COLLEAGUE:

RESEARCH QUESTION

– adding Paul Adler's email for your responses (repeat posting to encourage participation:-))

Respond to: padler@usc.edu.

I am doing some research on work motivation in the context of what I have been calling "large-scale collaborative creativity" (LSCC) -- by which I mean situations where individual tasks require simultaneously (a) high levels of creativity and (b) close coordination with a large number of other creative contributors. I wonder if anyone can point me to descriptions of work and creativity in this setting.

Some background to my question:

Using the term "large scale", I'm thinking of the design of a new generation automobile or airplane or software system -- versus small scale projects where the team can coordinate using face-to-face mechanisms. Using the term "collaborative creativity", I am referring to projects where there is a lot of interdependence among components -- versus situations where the degree of modularity of the system is high and contributors do not have to worry about the impact of their component's design on other components' performance.

In these LSCC settings, contributors have to take into consideration not only the work of others in their immediate design team (where the small-scale of their interdependence can be managed by informal "mutual adjustment"), but also the work of many others outside that immediate team (which requires more formalized coordination mechanisms such as formal authority and formal design standards and requirements).

What most intrigues me is that to create a really first-rate product of this kind, component-level engineers need to embrace -- rather than merely reluctantly conform to -- these formal constraints.

I'm looking for first-hand accounts of work in this kind of setting, where contributors describe what it's like to experience these "constraints" not as impediments to their creative autonomy, but as stimuli for creative solutions that contribute to the overall effort.

Happy to compile any suggestions and make them available to others.

Thanks in advance
