General Announcements:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi,

I am looking for current stories about students whose business education has had a life altering impact. For example, an impoverished student who struggles to pay for tuition, excels academically and then starts a successful business. There is ample research indicating that stories are an exceptionally effective method to communicate messages. Video enhances the effectiveness of stories because emotions can be transmitted better through video than text. For example, some time ago there was a report on 60 Minutes about a school in Chicago that provides a rigorous academic experience to underprivileged students and has a life altering effect on them. A link to the above mentioned video is on the school's webpage, which is linked below.

    http://www.cristorey.net/

If you watched the video, did you have an emotional reaction to it? If so, I hope you agree that business education should have a similar effect on business students. If you have similar videos about business students, would you be able to share them? I am also interested in written stories so if you have some, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

    Sincerely,

    TIM Folks,

I am working on integrating more open source/freeware software as options/examples in my management classes. I currently use PhpSurveyor, WIKIndx and OpenStat4 for my research methods class, Moodle for training and development, Gannt project, Freemind and PhpProject for general group support in many courses.

I would appreciate hearing what open source/freeware software you are using in any business education (management, finance, economics, accounting, supply management, marketing, etc...) context and how students are responding to it.

    Thank you!

    Doing Critical Applied Research

    Please excuse cross-postings.

Sunday, August 13, 10:00 - 12 noon, Hilton, Atlanta, Roosevelt, Third Floor

The focus of this PDW is best explained by looking at the four words in the title in reverse order. First and foremost, this PDW is concerned with producing research that is both rigorous and relevant with one important proviso. It assumes that publication in a major peer-reviewed academic journal is but one of several indications of research that is both rigorous and relevant. Our focus is on research in which other publication venues - funded research, consulting, research reports, newspaper or online articles and many others - are as important or more important than publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal. By the term applied, we mean to focus on research that is intended not only to inform academic debates but to inform policies and practices in private sector, public sector, and non-profit sector organizations. By the term critical, we mean to focus on rigorous (broadly defined) research that, in some sense, goes against the mainstream and is not part of the dominant logic either in academic or policy circles.

Critical research, in this sense, both challenges and deconstructs the dominant logic and suggests novel lines of action. By the term doing, we mean to focus more on process and less on method.

There are two particularly important aspects of this process. First, because critical applied research is "outside the mainstream," it is often complicated to arrange (for a variety of reasons) and requires sound judgement as well as sound methods. Second, critical applied research by definition requires the involvement of both academics and non- academics in framing the research agenda and often in carrying out the research. This PDW is intended for anyone from doctoral student to senior academic to industrial or government researcher to reflective practitioner who is interested in or involved with doing critical applied research.

The format will feature brief overviews from two practitioners (Tom Potterfield, Tony LeTrent-Jones), two critical academics (David Knights, David Weir), and summary observations from a senior academic (Mariann Jelinek) followed by an open discussion with the audience.

    PDW for Academic Executives

    Hello!

We hope you are planning to attend the upcoming (August 1116) Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Atlanta. In the latter regard, you are cordially invited to participate in a special Academy workshop for academic executives on Friday, August 11 at the downtown Marriott Marquis Hotel. The workshop ("Building the Academic Unit") will focus on conflicts that academic executives encounter in their leadership roles. We have designed this "by invitation only" workshop for Deans, Chairs and Directors.

Our workshop presenters will share "lessons learned" about dealing with conflicts that arise in academic units. The presenters will be

Dr. Stanley Sloan, Sloan Management Consulting Ms. Lin Inlow, Center for Conflict Resolution and Negotiation, Georgia State University Mr. John Marshall, Office of Legal Affairs, Georgia State University Dr. Robert Gatewood, Executive MBA Program, Texas Christian University

As event organizers for this special workshop, we have been collaborating with Dr. Stanley Sloan to interview academic executives to help us complete preparation of a meaningful learning experience for you. We are confident that this workshop will provide a valuable and relevant experience for workshop participants. We encourage your participation in this "Building the Academic Unit" workshop on August 11.

    Qualitative Research Methods

Friday, August 11, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm at the Atlanta Marriott in International 4

Over 160 people came to the PDW "The Power of Richness: The Why, When, Where and How of Qualitative Research Methods" at the Academy meetings last year in Honolulu. Afterwards many participants encouraged us to organize a follow-up workshop on qualitative methods at this year's meeting in Atlanta. There seems to be a general sense that while most doctoral programs provide very good training in quantitative methods, relatively few teach students how to do qualitative research well. We believe that it is important to try to disseminate more widely how to do first rate qualitative research that will by publishable in leading management journals. For this reason we have indeed organized a follow-up workshop and recruited Mauro Guillen (Wharton-U. of Pennsylvania), Sara Rynes (Editor of AMJ), Nicolaj Siggelkow (Wharton-U. of Pennsylvania), John Wagner (Associate Editor of ASQ), and Karl Weick (Michigan) to present their ideas about how to make qualitative research powerful and how to get it published. The professional development workshop will take place on Friday, August 11, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm at the Atlanta Marriott in International 4. We hope that many of you will be enticed to come to Atlanta early and participate in the workshop.

    TECHNOLOGY AND ORGANIZATION:

ESSAYS IN HONOUR OF JOAN WOODWARD

Call for Papers for a Volume in the Research in the Sociology of Organizations Series

Deadline: Abstracts of less than 1000 words due January 29, 2007.

    Editors:

Dorothy Griffiths, Imperial College London (d.griffiths@imperial.ac.uk)

Nelson Phillips, Imperial College London (n.phillips@imperial.ac.uk)

Graham Sewell, Imperial College London (g.sewell@imperial.ac.uk)

    Rationale

It is now 35 years since the death of Professor Joan Woodward, one of the founding figures of organization studies. Professor Woodward died in 1971 at the age of 54 after a relatively brief but highly distinguished career as a management researcher and teacher, and just six years after the publication of her landmark book Industrial Organization. At the time of her death, Professor Woodward was the Chair in Industrial Sociology at Imperial College London, having been elected as only the second women professor at the College in 1970. She had joined the Production Engineering and Management Section of Imperial in 1958 and the majority of her most important work was published during this period. Prior to this she had spent a number of years at the South East Essex College of Technology where she conducted much of the empirical work that informed her significant contributions to the field.

Given the character and scope of these contributions, it is particularly appropriate that Research in the Sociology of Organizations will devote a volume to the commemoration of her life and work. Professor Woodward was instrumental in bringing technology to the fore in organizational sociology and her 10 year research program was one of the most influential projects ever carried out in the field of organization and management studies. In fact, Charles Perrow argues that Joan Woodward's work is "the most ambitious and stimulating comparative study using technology as an independent variable." Indeed, the significant number of citations her work continues to receive across many disciplines is testament to its originality and importance.

The purpose of this proposed volume of Research in the Sociology of Organizations is to critically re-engage with Joan Woodward's contributions to organizational scholarship, while carrying forward the spirit of her thinking on the complex interaction between the social and technical realms. We also wish to take stock of recent developments in the themes, issues, and theories that she introduced including the relationship between technology and organizational design, the role of technology in improving organizational performance, and the ways we should conceptualize technology when studying organizations. We particularly encourage submissions that apply and extend such concepts through an empirical engagement with new and emerging technologies, although outstanding theoretical submissions that critically engage with topics in technology and organization are also encouraged.

More specifically, some possible themes that might be considered in submissions include (but are not restricted to):

× How our thinking on technology and organization should be adapted to reflect the new technologies that have recently entered, or that are in the process of entering, organizations (i.e., 3G mobile telephony, second generation web services, lean production, modular production, supply management systems, electronic surveillance, etc.).

× How our thinking on technology and organization should be adapted to reflect the development of new organizational forms (i.e., network organizations, virtual organizations, off-shoring, alliances, etc.).

× What new theoretical perspectives have potential in helping us to understand the role of technology in organizations (i.e., institutional theory, resource based views of the firm, social construction of technology, actor network theory, critical management studies, etc.).

× The rise of the "security society" and its implications for technology and organizations.

× Empirical papers that use novel methods for studying the role of technology in organizations.

In sum, we invite the submission of papers that engage and extend the themes that first came to prominence in the work of Joan Woodward, that critically appraise her contributions, that articulate recent developments in key areas related to her scholarship, and that put forward possible enrichments or challenges to her ideas.

Authors are asked to submit an abstract of their proposed paper by January 29, 2007. The editors will invite a limited number of authors to submit full drafts by June 15, 2007. Authors invited to submit full drafts will also be invited to an optional paper development workshop to be held at Imperial College London in July 2007. Manuscripts revised following the workshop will be peer reviewed by three reviewers, revised, and then resubmitted for final consideration for publication.
