    Basic Program Information

    New AOM Conference Calendar Design:

    August 7-8, PDWs

August 9, All-Academy Welcome Breakfast (which replaces the Presidential/awards Luncheon), All Academy PDWs and Symposia, and various division business meetings/socials.  (Note: CMDs business meetings/socials will likely be scheduled for evening times on this day.)

August 10-11, Scholarly Program and various division business meetings or socials.

IMPORTANT:  ALL sessions for papers and symposia now run 90 minutes with 15 minutes between sessions, beginning at 8am. Please consider this time limitation when inviting panelists for symposia. Also, at our last business meeting, an overwhelming majority voiced their preference to NOT have paper respondents on panels.

FAQ:  What is a "symposium?" These typically are organized as Panel Symposia and Presenter Symposia. A Panel Symposium engages a group of panelists in a formal interactive discussion. A Presenter Symposium involves a series of authored papers on a pre-set theme. Symposia are designed for a targeted audience and can have up to three divisions or interest groups for sponsorship. They are NOT reviewed blind like paper submissions. For more information on submission requirements for PDWs, scholarly papers, and symposia, see the documents on the http://submissions.aomonline.org/2009 website.

    Call for Proposals

The Practice Theme Committee is of strategic importance to the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place> and spans across all Divisions and Interest Groups of the Academy. It aims to:
    •       Develop greater awareness of what practice means and how it can usefully inform our scholarship in terms of both research and teaching.
    •       Identify and profile exemplary initiatives that bridge the gap between theory and practice and engage practitioners and academics in the co-creation of knowledge.
    •       Create a platform for ongoing engagement with practitioners so that the knowledge we discover is relevant and has impact.

This year's theme "Green Management Matters" encourages us to self-reflectively examine the assumptions behind green management that inform our practices in research and teaching. We invite you to take the challenge that a practice perspective offers to engage with:

    1.      What are "Green Practices," why do they matter in organizations, and how do they impact scholarship and society?
    2.      How do we enhance "Eco Literacy and Learning" with "Green Curricula," "Environmental Leaders and Managers," "Employee Engagement," and "Green Politics"?
    3.      How do we bridge theory and practice to encourage "Environmental Design" and "Environmental Strategies" for "Product Stewardship" and "Sustainable Development"?
    4.      How do "Green Practices" encourage "Stakeholder Engagement," build "Environmental Partnerships," shape "Environmental Ethics," and foster "Global Alliances"?
    5.      How can we teach, research, and implement "Green Management Scenario Planning" and "Environmental Policy" for effective "Crisis Management" and "Risk Management"?
    6.      How can we better understand the role of phronesis in addressing 'mal-practice' and 'mis-management' in advancing greater corporate social responsibility?

We encourage exciting, innovative, and interdisciplinary workshops involving both researchers and practitioners and elucidating the link between green management and practice. Please note that the "Rule of Three" applies for the 2009 PDW program.

    Dear colleagues,

The deadline for submitting PDW proposals is approaching -- January 15, 2009. Please let me know your ideas and share with me your potential PDW proposals... Early submission is encouraged!!

On behalf of the International Theme Committee (ITC), I invite you to submit PDW proposals with an international focus and perspective.

We will be glad to co-sponsor workshops that while dealing with the conference topic "Green Management Matters" also promote the internationalization of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place> as an institution.

The inclusion of non <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> members as speakers in PDW proposals is highly recommended. We truly believe that different perspectives, cultures and ideas not only make our academic discussions richer, but also contribute to our own personal and professional development (as well as that of the participants).

Please send your submissions using the following webpage (PDW submission system)
    http://submissions.aomonline.org/2009

EGOS Sub-theme 25: Energizing entrepreneurship: The role of industry knowledge structures in creating, assessing, and embedding new business ventures

    Weblink:
    http://www.egosnet.org/conferences/collo25/sub_25.shtml

    Call for Papers

Entrepreneurship has gained high prominence in the field of organization studies. It is also on top of the economic agenda of many regional and national governments as well as the European Union. Yet, our knowledge of the early stages of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship is still rather limited. Our aim for this sub-theme is to shed more light on these early stages by inviting scholars to submit papers that theorize and research the creating, assessing and embedding of new business opportunities.

Business opportunities emerge in the interaction between entrepreneurs and their industry environment. Whether these opportunities are primarily shaped by entrepreneurs or by the industry in which they operate is a key question currently open to debate. This sub-theme will consider an intermediate position in which entrepreneurs create new business opportunities by comprehending, interpreting, and reframing existing industry knowledge structures.

Industry knowledge structures refer to the different types and qualities of knowledge - and their linkages- that underlie an industry's products and technologies. This definition assumes that multiple and sometimes competing knowledge bases exist in an industry. This diversity sets the stage for competitive rivalry among companies that capitalize on different types of knowledge. It also creates opportunities for new firm creation to capitalize on convergence and divergence in the industry. Industry knowledge structures, as such, both enable and constrain entrepreneurs in their possibilities for creating new ventures. More specifically, industry knowledge structures influence the mobility, migration, and diffusion of knowledge; capability development; patterns of resource or skill accumulation; innovation regimes; the efficacy of different modes of exploitation; and the like.

Entrepreneurs and internal and external stakeholders (venture capitalists, boards of directors, and the like) assess the chances of survival in the market and make use of the knowledge in their industry environment to improve these chances. Where new opportunities are created by diverting from threaded paths, entrepreneurs will also find a need to embed their businesses into their respective industries. This will lead entrepreneurs to attempt to transform industries' knowledge structures. This, in turn, will provide a basis for the development of other new business opportunities. Hence, our definition also underscores and reinforces the role of institutional entrepreneurship in creating new market areas, new organizational forms and business streams.

We invite papers that discuss the way ventures are created, assessed, and embedded as entrepreneurs comprehend, interpret and reframe industry knowledge structures. Questions in this domain include, but are not limited to:

    * How are industry knowledge structures created, maintained and changed?
    * How do entrepreneurs recognize industry knowledge structures?
    * How do they interpret disconnectedness of, and linkages between industry knowledge structures?
    * How do entrepreneurs convert this knowledge into a clear definition of opportunities?
    * How do they convert these definitions of opportunities into prototypes for different types of firms?
    * How do these different processes - comprehending, interpreting, and reframing - develop over time as knowledge structures change?
    * What are the strategic implications of entrepreneurs' learning for changing well-established knowledge structures?
    * How do these processes influence the various stages of new venture creation and opportunity recognition?
    * How can industry knowledge structures be measured or observed qualitatively and quantitatively?

We are interested in papers that provide a strong theoretical contribution to the field of new business venturing and opportunity development. We welcome conceptual as well as qualitative or quantitative empirical papers. Specifically, we are interested in papers that further develop or apply the notion of industry knowledge structures.

The Journal of Management and Organization is currently seeking academic papers for this Special Issue. The purpose of which is to focus on how social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship can more generally inform our understanding of management and organizations in the sporting industry. Submitted papers for this special issue should focus on the contribution of research to management and organization studies. Many corporations are now shifting from a traditional charity perspective to a strategic corporate social responsibility perspective in which there is an attempt to integrate business operations with corporate donations (Dean, 2002; Porter & Kramer, 2006). The area of social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship in sports remains a relatively unexplored research area (McAlister & Ferrell, 2002).

Corporate social responsibility occurs as "corporations possess the power to control and influence the quality of life of employees, customers, shareholders and residents of local communities in which they operate" (Pava & Krausz, 1997:337). Social responsibility and philanthropy have gained in significance for businesses worldwide but particularly for those in the sports industry. Sporting organizations are now focusing on efforts to increase their philanthropy through being better social enterprises. By utilizing entrepreneurship, businesses in the sports industry such as the National Basketball Association and Australian Football League have increased their efforts to be seen as caring organizations that help the community.

In this special issue we define entrepreneurship as when an individual or organization tries to be proactive, innovative and risk taking (Holt, <st1:place w:st="on">Rutherford</st1:place> & Clohessy, 2007), particularly as they relate to a sport organization's socially responsible or philanthropic endeavours. Social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship offer direction to business leaders who want to increase their company's social and economic performance (Wolcott & Lippitz, 2007). The objective of this special issue is to enhance the management and organization literature by examining issues relating to social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship in the sports industry.

The aim of this special issue is to improve the understanding of social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship within a sport context. Consistent with the objectives of the Journal of Management and Organization, we seek both conceptual and empirical papers on how social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship affect the sports industry. We welcome submissions from authors internationally as well as <st1:country-region w:st="on">Australia</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">New Zealand</st1:country-region></st1:place>.

Below are listed some issues that we believe would fit well with this special issue:

          The significance of social responsibility in the sports industry

          Challenges and opportunities of philanthropy in sport management

          Models of social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship that have been adapted in sport

          Efforts to create and develop social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship in sport

          Research agenda and theoretical frameworks that examine social responsibility, philanthropy and entrepreneurship in sport

          Community initiatives and investment in sports and the influence of philanthropy in developing sport management

          Community and economic development in sports and the impact this has on sports-related businesses

          Business ethics and corporate governance in the sports industry

          Environmental and sustainable development in sports and how this has impacted social responsibility

          Evaluation and measurement of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy

          Global initiatives and financial accountability in sports

Manuscript submissions should observe the author guidelines at http://www.jmanorg.com/authorguidelines/. All papers submitted for the special journal issue will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Manuscripts must not be submitted to another journal while they are under review by the Journal of Management and Organization nor should they have been previously published. The special issue will include 8-10 articles of approximately 8,000 words each and is expected to be published in Journal of Management and Organization 16(2) (2010).

Manuscripts should be submitted no later than March 30, 2009 via e-mail to either of the guest editors:

    Decision Sciences Journal

    Special Topic Forum

New Frontiers in Collaborative Decision Making

    Associate Editor Team

    Paulo B. Goes, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Arizona</st1:placename></st1:place>

    José A. Pino, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Chile</st1:placename></st1:place>

    Asoo Vakharia, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename></st1:place>

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in collaborative decision making in a variety of business settings.  One major reason for this could be the increases in globalization of business operations leading to geographically dispersed executives and decision makers.  Information technology plays a key role in supporting and facilitating collaborative efforts in these settings and the area of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) addresses issues in the design, development, and implementation of information technology tools to support group decision making.

Some of the well-known IT tools developed in this arena and used extensively today include web 2.0, social networks, wikis, multi-player games, and virtual team environments.  From a business perspective, collaborative IT-based tools are vital enablers to address multiple strategic and tactical problems.  These include new product design and development, coordination of virtual teams located across continents, vendor and outsourcing management, designing effective and efficient supply chains, and knowledge management systems

There are a few documented success stories in the application of IT to support business decision making.  For example ECR (Efficient Consumer Response) is one mechanism which has been used to enhance collaborative decision making in the supply chain. Another emerging concept in global corporations is the "24-Hour Knowledge Factory", which can be used to support the collaborative efforts between globally dispersed team members.  However, what seems to be lacking is some focus in terms of problem settings and corresponding tools/technologies to support collaborative decision making.  It is time, therefore, to reflect on the value of IT tools and their applicability to support and enhance collaborative decision making.  This is the major motivation underlying this STF in the Decision Sciences journal.

Topics of Interest for this special issue on the use of IT tools to support collaborative decision making include, but are not limited to:

    ·       Evaluating the current state of the fields of CSCW and decision making;

    1       Managing Knowledge "Factories;"
    2       Reviewing, extending, and developing theoretical paradigms linking these fields;
    3       New IT models, methods and techniques to enhance collaborative decision making;
4       Application of IT tools in supporting decision making in:

    ·       New Product Design and Development;

    1       Supply Chain Management; and
    2       Managing Virtual Teams.

Building on the editorial mission of Decision Sciences, this STF seeks manuscripts utilizing diverse research approaches such as empirical, simulation, and/or analytical research methods.  Articles published in this STF must meet Decision Sciences high standards of research rigor and originality, while embracing managerial relevance, not only in the research problem studied, but also in their impact on enhanced decision making.  STFs consist of a collection of three to five articles that are published in a regular issue along with other peer-reviewed articles.

Manuscript preparation and submission instructions can be found on journal's web site at http://decisionsciencesjournal.org/Help/Author/author_Guidelines.cfm. In the cover letter, please indicate that your submission is for the New Frontiers in Collaborative Decision Making STF.  The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2009.

    Associate Editor Team

Given the interdisciplinary nature of Decision Sciences, the Associate Editor Team has expertise in both information technology and supply chain management.  It is the goal of this STF to foster interdisciplinary knowledge and publish high impact interdisciplinary research that can impact future research in multiple domains.

Decision Support Systems (Call for Papers)

Special Issue: New Concepts, Methodologies and Algorithms for Business Education and Research in the 21st Century:

    [A] Scope of Special Issue

This special issue is prepared to celebrate the 95th birthday of Professor William W. Cooper (<st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Texas</st1:placename> at <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Austin</st1:place></st1:city>). Professor Cooper has dedicated his whole life to the development of various methodologies and concepts in business education and research. He made a major contribution to the initial stages of linear programming, goal programming, stochastic programming, non-linear programming and multi-objective optimization. Later, he has extended the technique of linear programming and non-linear programming into the development of data envelopment analysis (DEA) which has been widely applied to performance analysis in public and private sectors. The contributions of Professor Cooper are not limited in the development of methodology for business. He has also developed important business-related concepts and research areas such as management science, decision support systems, managerial accounting and auditing, all of which serve currently as pedagogical and research bases in modern business and business education.

The research (messages) initiated by Professor Cooper has been extended and reformed into various types of new sciences and academic disciplines. This special issue reviews the original motivation concerning how Professor Cooper has developed various new sciences. Then, the special issue discusses new developments in concepts and methods for private and public sector managements in the 21st century. We also look for new algorithms related to such conceptual and methodological developments.

The goal of this special issue is not limited to DEA and the other concepts and methodologies related to Professor Cooper. Rather, this special issue looks for other types of new concepts, models and methodologies for modern business, industry and public sector management. In particular, this special issue searches for new methodological developments, new theoretical extensions and various applications in multi-disciplinary areas (e.g., business & information technology). A linkage to modern information technology is highly recommended. Consequently, this special issue is aimed to open up new research areas for Decision Support Systems in the 21st century.

    Position Announcements:

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Strategic Management, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship

The Strategic Management Area at Georgia Tech's College of Management (COM) seeks Qualified Applicants for their Ph.D. program

Have you ever thought about getting a Ph.D.?  A doctoral degree qualifies you to pursue an academic career as a researcher and educator.  An academic career provides not only tremendous intellectual freedom, but makes it possible to work with bright young people throughout your life.  You really can make a difference through the scholarly research you create, and the lives you shape through your teaching.  The life style is great, and the pay is good!

Frequently, Ph.D. graduates' starting salary range from $110K to $170K, depending on placement, which is largely determined by performance in the doctoral program.  Graduates from the GT's Strategy PhD program have recently taken tenure-track positions at some of the world's leading universities like the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Virginia</st1:placename></st1:place>.  Moreover, the job market for Strategy Ph.D.s has been strong, and in recent years more positions have been available than candidates pursuing jobs.  Thus, it is not surprising that the position of a university professor is frequently ranked as one of the most desirable jobs in the world.

Why in Strategic Management?   As the integrative discipline in business management, strategy is both interesting and fun.  The unifying element of strategy research is driven by answering the question of why do some firms outperform their competitors? To answer this critical question, researchers draw on different disciplines, such as economics and sociology, to study the critical roles that managers, technologies, and business relationships play in determining why some companies do better than others.  The Strategy Area at GT focuses on strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Why at Georgia Tech?  GT's Ph.D. program is strongly research oriented, and emphasizes the early involvement of our students in research projects with world-wide leading faculty. The Ph.D. program places significant weight on learning outside the classroom.  Given the small size of the program, the tutorial-mentor model is the primary educational approach employed.  Thus, doctoral students experience significant attention and support by a diverse set of world-class faculty.

At Georgia Tech, the study of strategic management is interdisciplinary and integrative, providing focus in the areas of technology and innovation management, entrepreneurship, and international management.  The Strategic Management area represents a strong community of active researchers pursuing a wide variety of interests.  See http://mgt.gatech.edu/fac_research/acad_areas/stg_mgt.html for more information.

Current strategy Ph.D. students are very successful.  They have published in leading research journals (e.g., Industrial and Corporate Change and Organization Science), and their research has been included in the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Best Paper Proceedings</st1:placename></st1:place>.  Current students have presented research at prestigious conferences held in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">U.S.</st1:country-region> and Europe like the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Meetings</st1:placename></st1:place>, Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference (ACAC), Roundtable for Engineering Entrepreneurship Research (REER), Strategic Management Society Conference, and the Technology Transfer Society (T2S) Conference.  They have been included in by-invitation-only conferences and invited to present research at places like the Harvard Business School, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the <st1:placename w:st="on">Wharton</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype> at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Pennsylvania</st1:placename></st1:place>.  A current student has won a competitive Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Teaching Award</st1:placename></st1:place>.  Another student holds one of the coveted GT's Presidential Fellowships.  Job placements are strong.

Here is what some current Ph.D. students have to say about Georgia Tech's Ph.D. program in strategic management:

I selected the Georgia Tech Ph.D. program in Strategic Management over several others because I found good synergy between my research interests and those of the faculty in the program here.  The strategy faculty has a strong commitment to fields such as innovation, high technology, international issues and entrepreneurship.  The multi-disciplinary approach is encouraged through a variety of classroom settings and research activities.

The program in strategy is has a strong research emphasis in innovation, which is unique among all the top management Ph.D. programs. After spending a year, I am impressed by the academic atmosphere here: there is round-the-clock hard-work going on in every corner of this brand-new building, but there is fun among us as we enjoy life, and there is frequent cooperation between faculty from different departments, and there is a culture that encourages students and faculty to work together closely.

Many new Ph.D. students are concerned about finding a faculty member whose research interests overlap with their own.  I have found that at Georgia Tech, this concern is mitigated both by the faculty's breadth of research interests and willingness to help young researchers.

The Georgia Tech Ph.D. program has encouraged my intellectual growth and provided a challenging environment in which to learn how to be a successful faculty member at a top-level research university.

There exists a rare balance in the Ph.D. program at Georgia Tech between allowing young researchers the freedom to explore their own interests and giving them the guidance to create exemplary research.

Faculty are very supportive in developing each student's research ability.

At the end of my 3rd year, I am confident I have made a good choice for my doctoral study.  The research active faculty are approachable and willing to work on joint projects with Ph.D. students.  I have already had several opportunities to present papers at academic conferences both domestically and abroad.

The COM at Georgia Tech is the home of an NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training program, Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results (TI:GER, see http://tiger.gatech.edu/), as well as a US Department of Education funded Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER, see http://www.ciber.gatech.edu/).  Additional information about Georgia Tech's COM and its faculty is available at: http://mgt.gatech.edu/  The Strategic Management area represents a strong community of active researchers pursuing a diversity of interests (See http://mgt.gatech.edu/fac_research/acad_areas/stg_mgt.html for more information). The strategy area at Georgia Tech hosts and co-sponsors leading annual research conferences like the Roundtable for Engineering Entrepreneurship Research (REER) and the Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference (ACAC), which provide an opportunity to mingle with world-wide leading scholars in entrepreneurship and strategy.

How do I finance the program, and how do I apply?  If admitted to the program, you will be fully funded to go to school to get your degree!  Your tuition will be waived, and you'll receive a generous stipend, etc.  Application deadline is January 15th for admission in the following fall semester (August 15th). All relevant financial information, including the application package is online at http://mgt.gatech.edu/programs/phd.html?link=left_info_for   The strategy area will consider applicants that took either the GMAT or the GRE.

Contact the strategy Ph.D. coordinator, Professor Frank T. Rothaermel at frank.rothaermel@mgt.gatech.edu for any remaining questions.
