Dear All:
I would like to invite you to a professional development workshop being held on Saturday, August 9, 2008, from 1:30 -3:30 pm, <st1:place w:st="on">La Jolla</st1:place>, Anaheim Marriott Hotel.
Regulation, Innovation and Competitive Advantage

Government regulation is one of the most important determinants that influences the development and diffusion of environmental technologies. Despite the fact that there had been significant theoretical advancements with regard to the effect of alternative types of policy instruments on the rate and direction of technological change, the literature is still quite underdeveloped. This PDW seeks to bring together a group of scholars in the
field of regulation and innovation as well as scholars in management strategy with the goal of establishing conversations around this research theme and exploring new research avenues. Three papers in this PDW examine the impact of government regulations on the development of regulation-driven technologies and technology diffusion, while the last paper seeks to understand attributes that lead firms to adopt organizational practices
(organizational innovation) under regulatory regimes.
The PDW consists of paper presentations followed by audience interactions. A discussant will briefly talk about presented papers following presentations. Audience will then be invited to interact with both discussant and paper presenters.

The purpose of this workshop is to increase awareness among management
researchers of the severe limitations of Null Hypothesis Significance
Testing (NHST) and to introduce alternative approaches based on effect
size measures and confidence intervals.
NHST has been criticized by methodologists on various grounds (Cohen,
1994; Cortina & Folger, 1998; Schmidt, 1996; Starbuck, 2006; Thompson,
1996). Their criticism suggests that the extensive use of NHST in
quantitative management research has led to the accumulation of deceptive findings in the management literature. In a field that aspires to provide useful advice to managers, researchers need to focus on practically important effects that are robust across a wide variety of settings. To identify practically meaningful findings, methodologists have recommended the reporting of effect sizes and confidence intervals as an alternative to NHST. Recently, approaches for estimating confidence intervals for effect size measures have also been introduced (Cummings & Finch, 2001; Kline, 2004). The application of alternatives to NHST by management researchers, however, has been limited by both a lack of sensitivity regarding the inherent problems of NHST and a limited familiarity with alternative approaches. Our two-hour workshop addresses these issues in the following three modules:
- Critique of NHST (2 speakers)
- Alternatives to NHST (1 speakers)
- Round-table discussion for hands-on advice
No pre-registration is required to attend this session.

16th Annual
Craft of Reviewing Workshop
Sponsored by the OB, RM, BPS, GDO Divisions of the Academy of Management
Sunday August 10th, 2008
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Hilton Anaheim, Palos Verdes A
Panelists:
Bradley Kirkman, Texas A&M University
Karen Locke, William & Mary College
Mike Mumford, University of Oklahoma
Margaret Williams, Virginia Commonwealth University
Reviewers serve as gatekeepers to the management field's most important peer-reviewed journals. As such, reviewers directly influence the shape of management science, and all of us are expected to play this important role at some point in our careers. Many, however, find that they are thrown into this task with very little training or guidance. New and inexperienced reviewers find themselves asking questions such as: What
constitutes a good review? What are the differences between reviewing empirical and theoretical papers? How should reviewers handle papers outside their area of expertise? What are editors looking for in reviewers-and reviews? The Craft of Reviewing workshop seeks to answer these questions and more.
Developed with junior faculty and doctoral students in mind, the workshop is primarily aimed at those who are just beginning to get their feet wet as reviewers. More experienced reviewers, who simply would like to hone their skills, are also welcome. The purpose is to provide participants with a forum for direct interaction between themselves and accomplished reviewers. While invited panelists begin the workshop by discussing briefly (about 10 minutes each) their views on the "craft," the primary focus of the session is audience participation. Thus, the majority of the workshop is devoted to audience questions, audience-panelist interaction, and open discussion. Because it is intended to address the audience's needs directly, the ultimate nature of the session is largely dependent upon the nature of the audience. In an effort to appeal to as many Academy members as possible, we are putting together a diverse mix of panelists with both theoretical and methodological orientations, who have a variety of substantive interests and who are representatives of the editorial boards for several leading journals. The meetings in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Anaheim</st1:place></st1:city> will mark the 16th anniversary of the Craft of Reviewing workshop-meaning it has consistently attracted enthusiastic participants for over a decade. Its size (about 50 people attended last year) facilitates interaction between audience and panelists. Those who attend find it meaningful and helpful, and often personally thank the organizers and panelists for putting the workshop together. The workshop serves as an excellent way for first-timers to get some real information dedicated to them, and it helps them to begin building their own careers.

The Advanced Social Networks PDW will allow researchers who are currently engaged in social network research, or who have specific plans to incorporate social network concepts into existing streams of research, to interact with one another. The goal of the PDW is to facilitate interaction among researchers engaged in network research. We are especially hopeful that cross level interactions will occur, in keeping with the inherently multilevel nature of social network analysis.
WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS: Advanced registration is required. Please email a brief description (50 words or less) of research interests specific to network analysis along with your preference of the top five discussants you would like to interact with to Heather Dixon-Fowler, HDixon-fowler@walton.uark.edu. Please apply no later than July 31st.
NOTE: This is an advanced social networks PDW, intended to allow researchers who are currently engaged in social network research to interact with one another. If you are not currently involved in social network research, please sign up for the Introduction to Social Networks Research PDW which is being held on Sat., August 9th from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. See the AOM Meeting Program for details.

Hi
I would like to announce the posting of the new Science of Science & Innovation Policy solicitation. The due date is Dec 16, 2008.
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08586/nsf08586.htm
In addition to standard SciSIP proposals, this solicitation includes a category for four demonstration projects. These projects are intended to demonstrate viable approaches to the collection and analysis of data on knowledge generation and innovation in organizations. The demonstration projects should provide evidence of the scalability and sustainability of the approach, have a data protection and dissemination plan, and include a plan describing how the project's progress towards its scientific goals can be evaluated and assessed.
This solicitation also calls for proposals which use new techniques to analyze and visualize complex datasets.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
Proposal Submission Deadline: October 30, 2008
E-Entrepreneurship and ICT Ventures: Strategy, Organization and Technology
A book edited by Prof. Dr. Tobias Kollmann, Dr. Andreas Kuckertz, and Christoph Stöckmann
University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany
Introduction
The formation of new ventures plays a decisive role for the social and economic development of the world and is often based on technological innovations. In recent times, electronic information technologies (e.g., internet applications, interactive television or mobile services), especially, have led to a considerable amount of newly founded companies. Business models that make use of such electronic information technologies, allowing the execution of interactive, inter-business processes are usually labeled as e-business. Against this background, e-entrepreneurship refers to the formation of new ventures with innovative business ideas within the e-business environment, which, using an electronic platform in data networks, offer their products and/or services based upon a predominantly electronic creation of value. Essential is the fact that this value proposition becomes possible only through the intelligent utilization of information technology. Given the rapid developments within this field, there exists a need for a state-of-the-art edited collection of articles in this field.
Objective of the Book
E-Entrepreneurship and ICT Ventures will be a standard reference in the rising field of e-entrepreneurship. The book will provide a unique and much needed overview of the current state of conceptual and empirical research at the interface of e-business and entrepreneurship research. Unlike other publications, E-Entrepreneurship will focus exclusively on this interface and, as a result, will merge two largely separate streams in the academic literature and close an important gap in current research. Thus, E-Entrepreneurship and ICT Ventures will contribute to an enhanced understanding of the important interface of e-business and entrepreneurship.
Target Audience
This book will be a timely reference and essential reading material for students, academics, practitioners (managers and entrepreneurs), and political decision makers interested in applying and fostering e-business concepts in an entrepreneurial environment.
Recommend topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Trends in enabling technologies that entrepreneurs can take advantage of to develop new business models
* Evaluation of concepts from strategic management and organizational science and their application in the context of e-entrepreneurship
* Strategic and organizational practices such as human resources, finance, marketing, and operations and their influence on the success of ICT-ventures
* The potential of social (Web 2.0) and semantic (Web 3.0) technologies for the development of new business models
* Environmental influences on e-entrepreneurship and challenges for policy makers following from these influences
Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before October 30, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 15, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by February 15, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference) and "Medical Information Science Reference" imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com.

International Journal of Information Security and Privacy
Special Issue Theme: Cases in Information Security and Privacy
Submission Deadline: September 30, 2008
Guest Editor: James Suleiman
Introduction
A practical, discipline based understanding of information security and privacy is essential for organizational success. Organizations have an increasing need to protect critical information and secure intellectual assets. It is therefore necessary to share knowledge on critical issues that organizations face and solutions that are implemented to address these issues. The sharing of this knowledge will better inform and enable information security and privacy practitioners, researchers, and educators to successfully deal with the many complex issues comprises this field.
We are cognizant of the fact that the rapid pace of changes in technologies available to enhance information security, while protecting the privacy of that information, has created a gap between theory and practice. Without a clear understanding of the practice of information security and privacy, this gap will be widening, which eventually will be detrimental to the field and ultimately will diminish the viability of the field.
Objective of the Special Issue
In the area of information security and privacy there exists a need for an edited collection of cases and best practices. This special issue aims to provide relevant research cases, teaching cases, and best practices in information security. The cases and best practices can originate from any organization in any part of the world. The issues examined must be applicable to a clearly identified group and preference will be given to discipline, business process, or issue specific cases as listed in the recommended topics section below. The preference for discipline, business process, or issue specific cases is being given to reinforce the concept that information security and privacy is important to all areas of business, not only information systems and information technology.
Submissions must provide adequate information regarding the organization upon which the case is based, discussion of the issues involved, coverage of any experiments or trials of techniques or managerial approaches, and finally, discussion of any lessons learned or conclusions drawn from this study.
Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following:
Accounting systems security
Businesses models and systems with security and privacy requirements and management
Civil rights and liberties
CRM, data mining and privacy
Electronic banking and financial services
Encryption, authentication and access control
Global issues
Hacking, cyber-terrorism, and intrusion detection
Human resource management issues
Intellectual property
Knowledge management and information security
Legal, regulatory, and compliance issues
Marketing, security and privacy
Outsourcing, intellectual property, and security
Supply chain management and security
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before September 30, 2008, papers for this special theme issue on Cases in Information Security and Privacy. Those wishing to submit a teaching case for potential publication should submit the entire case along with the completed teaching notes for review. If accepted for publication, only the case will be published along with a note for interested readers to contact the primary author for the teaching notes. All submissions must be original and not be under review by another publication. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by December 15, 2008 about the acceptance status and sent paper organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by January 15, 2009. - Positions
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
POST DOC <st1:place w:st="on">OPPORTUNITY</st1:place>
Get a head start in your academic career! The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research Cluster (EIC) at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, is offering the opportunity to spend 12- 24 months as salaried Post Doc at our school. This is one of nine Post Doctoral Research Fellowships being offered by the Faculty of Business. This position will be filled by a young researcher with a completed Ph.D. (before the end of 2008), who aspires to contribute to the international research frontier in entrepreneurship and/or innovation, and who has already shown promise of such ability. Very limited teaching will be expected.
EIC is rapidly making progress towards reaching its ambitious goal of establishing itself in the international elite in entrepreneurship research. For example, we had 11 papers by 8 different authors accepted to the highly competitive Babson Conference (BCERC) conference this year - including a current and two former Post Docs. The EIC team has recently been awarded the largest business/economics Discovery Grant in the country by the Australian Research Council and several other large research grants, and Entrepreneurship & Innovation has also become a recognized research area with internal funding from the QUT Faculty of Business. Professor Per Davidsson, the Faculty of Business's Research Director, was last year elected to the executive of the Entrepreneurship Division of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place>, and is this year chair of the PDW program. We have had recent hits in journals like Strategic Management Journal; Journal of Business Venturing; Journal of Management Studies; Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice; <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management Learning</st1:placename></st1:place> and Education; Small Business Economics; Journal of Business Ethics, and many others. Last year we hosted the regional BCERC equivalent, the AGSE Entrepreneurship Research Exchange. We have an increasing number of research students in entrepreneurship, and we often host visiting academics in this field. When QUTs MBA program made the Financial Times top 100 list in 2004 it was the first in <st1:state w:st="on">Queensland</st1:state> to ever do so, and only the third in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region>. The QUT Faculty of business was also the first in the country to achieve "Triple Crown Accreditation" (AACSB; AMBA; EQUIS).
It is in this vibrant, fast paced environment that we want one young and ambitious researcher to contribute to and benefit from for 12 to 24 months in 2009/10. The position would give the right candidate an excellent opportunity to further develop their thesis (or other already on-going work) to published papers as well as to get involved in new projects in collaboration with members of our staff. Initially positions would be offered for 12 months with the opportunity to extend each appointment for another 12 months if both parties agree. Office, computer facilities and opportunities for conference travel will be provided. EIC benefits from QUT's excellent library resources, which give electronic access to a very large number of journals. Further information on the Faculty's research programs can be found at www.bus.qut.edu.au/research/acbr
EIC is located at the Gardens Point campus in the central parts of <st1:city w:st="on">Brisbane</st1:city>, the capital of <st1:state w:st="on">Queensland</st1:state>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region>. <st1:city w:st="on">Brisbane</st1:city> is a growing city of 1.5 million with easy access to the beaches at Gold and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Sunshine</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Coasts</st1:placetype></st1:place> as well as the rainforest parks in the hinterland. For further information about <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Brisbane</st1:place></st1:city>, use this link: www.ourbrisbane.com.
The Post Doctoral salary is currently AUD 65, 815 - $68,448 per annum (currently the AUD is approximately equivalent to the USD). Costs of living in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Brisbane</st1:place></st1:city> are reasonable.
Applicants must have finished their Ph.D. before taking up the position, and should preferably be able to start in January 2008. Application forms and guidelines may be obtained from the Research Support Office or via the web at http://www.bus.qut.edu.au/research/researchsupp/forms.jsp.
The application must be received by the Senior Administration Officer (Research), Research Support Office, Faculty of Business, GPO Box 2434 Brisbane 4001 by no later than Friday 19 September 2008.
Note that we have only one position of this kind and that it will be very competitive. Before lodging a formal application you may want to explore the opportunity further. If you are a serious applicant and plan to attend the upcoming Academy of Management meeting in Anaheim you are welcome to email Professor Per Davidsson (per.davidsson@qut.edu.au)<mailto:per.davidsson@qut.edu.au)> to request an informal meeting to discuss the opportunity further. Interested candidates can make a first, informal contact by sending an email to Associate Professor Paul Steffens (p.steffens@qut.edu.au<mailto:p.steffens@qut.edu.au>) or Professor Per Davidsson. If you do so, make sure you include the following information:
a) time and place where PhD was/is being earned, b) title of thesis as well as main theory and methodological approach used in the thesis work; c) publications and conference presentations so far, d) intended use of Post Doc time, e) specific reason for wanting to spend a Post Doc year at QUT/EIC.
