Dear colleagues,
Join us in Chicago for a symposium on Service Innovation.
Program Session #: 1483 | Submission: 14556 | Sponsor(s): (TIM, OM)
Tuesday, Aug 11 2009 11:30am - 1:00pm at Hyatt Regency Chicago in Crystal C
Service Innovation:
From Idea Generation to Intellectual Property Protection
Chairs: Pedro Oliveira; U. Catolica Portuguesa, Celine Abecassis-Moedas; U. Catolica Portuguesa;
Both practitioners and researchers are keenly interested in understanding how services and service innovation can be used to differentiate and enhance commercial relationships. Services have transformed the advanced economies, representing more than 70% of aggregate production and employment. At the same time, services and manufacturing are increasingly interrelated and there is an increasingly important bundling of services with products. It is also widely recognized that the use of the Internet for delivering services introduced a set of new challenges and that we must revisit many of our assumptions behind service management. Surprisingly, there is scare academic research focusing on services innovation. The symposium will contribute to this debate by discussing critical topics for services, including the sources of new services innovations, the prediction of innovative choices among entrepreneurs, the challenges for well-established intellectual property protection (IPP), such as patents, and the existing gap between practice and research in service innovation.
The Major Role of Users in Services Innovation: An Empirical Investigation into the Sources of Financial and Hospitality Services. Pedro Oliveira; Catholic U. of Portugal - FCEE; Eric von Hippel; MIT Sloan School of Management;
Vicarious Learning vs. Tournament Theory in predicting Innovative Choices among Successful Entrepreneurs. Celine Abecassis-Moedas; U. Catolica Portuguesa; John E. Ettlie; Rochester Institute of Technology;
Deployment and Protection of Innovations: The Case of Financial Patents. Peter T. Gianiodis; Clemson U.;
Bridging the Gap between Practice and Research in Service Innovation. Liana Victorino; U. of Victoria; Rohit Verma; Cornell U.;

We would like to invite you to our PDW (#266) entitled "Where's the Evidence? Writing Excellent 'Practice Implications' in Scholarly Publications" on Saturday, August 8 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Swissotel Chicago in Velvey Salon 3.
Writing effective "Practice Implications" (PI's) that are relevant to practitioners and that translate research findings into practice is difficult, yet critical to developing an evidenced based approach to management practice. This PDW addresses this need. Key topics that will be examined include: What is the purpose of PI's and their role in translating a body of results into practice, action suggestions; Common problems encountered in developing and writing PI's now and how to address these challenges; Insights from the practitioner's standpoint on how to make research results useful to practice; Benchmarking of requirements for PI's (or other practice translation devices) in leading journals and their instructive guidelines; Experiential insights from a scholarly standpoint on strategies for identifying PI's and crafting them for publication; Participant discussion and group problem solving exercise around translating research findings into practice suggestions. Participants will leave this PDW with: (a) an appreciation of the importance of PI's and their key role in evidence based practice, (b) an evidence based template for writing these, and (c) practice in the process of developing PI's. Participants are invited to bring copies of findings and results sections from their current research for feedback during this session.
Presenters and Panelists:
W. Jack Duncan – (U. of Alabama at Birmingham and AOM Fellow) will address the role of PI's pro and con and strategies and mechanics for authors in crafting excellent PI's and other translation devices from research results.
Michele Issel (U. of Illinois at Chicago and Editor of the Healthcare Management Review) will address the purpose of PI's, their role in translating specific research findings into practice, common problems with current PI's from her standpoint as an editor, and how to better convey the relevance of findings to changing health administration practice. .
Francis A. Fullam ( Rush U. and Senior Director of Marketing Research and Patient Relations at Rush University Medical Center) will address how research results can be made useful to managerial practice and other considerations in translating research findings to practice relevance.
Tom J. Sanders (U. of Montevallo, Alabama and 30 years of prior experience as a hospital administrator and health system executive) will present a comparative analysis of results from benchmarking leading management and health care administration journals on their requirements and guidelines for PI's and other practice translation approaches.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
IE BUSINESS SCHOOL (MADRID, SPAIN)
TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
IE Business School is seeking applicants for two positions of Professor of Entrepreneurship (at the Assistant, Associate or Full rank). Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated record of research or a promising research stream that includes publications or potential for publication in leading academic journals, both discipline-based and general management. We also value the desire and the ability to teach our diverse students. Teaching load and the compensation package are competitive, and quality of life is world-class.
IE Business School is a private institution dedicated to building knowledge through research, and translating it to business practice. We so through diverse programs, all based on our core values: global reach, entrepreneurial spirit and a humanistic approach. Our student body represents more than 80 countries, while the 400+ IE's international Faculty teaches across various masters, MBA, doctorate, and executive education programs, including online education and blended programs.
IE is accredited by the AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA, and consists of IE University, IE Law School and IE Business School, as well as our Executive Education branch. Our programs are among the world´s best across all rankings. For example, in 2009, our MBA Program was ranked 3rd in Europe and 6th worldwide (Financial Times), while the Executive Education Program reached 10th place worldwide (Financial Times) and in 2008, The Economist ranked our MBA 10th worldwide. More rankings can be seen in our webpage by pointing at www.ie.edu
Our campus is located in the heart of the financial district in Madrid, Spain. The pleasure and convenience of living in the Spanish capital are hard to match. Madrid has a superb infrastructure: plenty of urban parks and other urban amenities, a comprehensive public health system complemented by the private sector, a heavy emphasis on culture and cultural events, etc. Public transportation is cheap and convenient, and closeness of the world's 11th largest airport makes travel to any part of the world simple.
Despite growth and modernization, Madrid has preserved a local and pleasant feel of its historical neighborhoods. The City offers an exquisite, tolerant and cosmopolitan life-style, with an offering of the world´s top museums, music/theatre/dance/film festivals, sport events, and diversity of food stores, restaurants, shops, galleries, and indoor or outdoor activities to suit all tastes. Yet, with a short commute one can live in the countryside, in one of the many quaint towns that surround Madrid. The increasing inflow of expatriates into the city has resulted in a growing number of private international schools, health services and other businesses serving this community. As a political and economic centre of Spain –roughly, the 10th largest economy worldwide- it hosts the headquarters of many Spanish and International companies, which enhances opportunities for research, executive education and consulting.
A requirement for the application is an earned Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship, Organizational Theory, Strategic Management, or related discipline, defended prior to joining. While obviously useful, fluency in Spanish is not used as a determining factor in our hiring decisions. Interested candidates are invited to submit a copy of their vita, example of academic writing and/or recent publications and 3 reference contacts. Any evidence for demonstrated teaching record / abilities is a plus. Electronic submissions are preferred and should be sent to Ms. Andrade (viviana.andrade@ie.edu) at the office of Faculty Affairs, or electronically at https://secure.ie.edu/reclutamiento/ .
We will be interviewing selected candidates at the AOM in Chicago.
