Building on a successful symposium at AOM 2008 in Anaheim, this PDW investigates the business of project-based organizations (PBOs), in the growing middle ground between market and firm. A PBO can be a firm, unit, or network of firms set up to complete an assignment. We address the evolution from traditional operations-driven project management to the strategic role of projects in delivering innovation and organizational change – and the implications for research and teaching.

Projects pervade many business dimensions from R&D and new product development, to the production of complex capital goods and implementing organizational change, and they occur in diverse industries like management consulting, engineering or entertainment. The change from conventional project management focused on operations (meeting time, cost and quality objectives) towards an increasingly strategic role of projects in driving innovation requires a new approach by management scholars to research – and teach – the 'business of projects'. Simultaneously, this new development presents a great opportunity for scholars to shape this emerging field of research on PBOs.

One aim of the PDW is to identify promising research questions for the way ahead, e.g. the role of learning, capability building, networks, or performance drivers at different levels, e.g. project team, organization, project network, and interaction effects between these levels. Hence, one core questions to be discussed is: What theories are most suitable to investigate PBOs and how different theories can contribute to it? This PDW brings together scholars with different lenses on and approaches to the business of projects and dedicates ample time for small-group roundtable discussions of these different views.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago.

AoM Professional Development Workshop (Sponsors: RM, BPS, OB, TIM, ENT, NDSC)

The Case Against Null Hypothesis Significance Testing: Flaws, Alternatives, and Action Plans

Academy of Management Meeting in Chicago, IL
    Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 11:10 AM – 1:10 PM
Sheraton Chicago in Chicago Ballroom 10

    Organizers & Presenters:
William H. Starbuck, University of Oregon
    Andreas Schwab, Iowa State University

    Donald E. Hatfield, Virginia Tech

    Eric Abrahamson, Columbia University

The purpose of this workshop is to increase awareness among management researchers of the severe limitations of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) and to introduce alternative approaches based on effect size measures and confidence intervals.

NHST has been criticized by methodologists on various grounds (Cohen, 1994; Cortina & Folger, 1998; Schmidt, 1996; Starbuck, 2006; Thompson, 1996).  Their criticism suggests that the extensive use of NHST in quantitative management research has led to the accumulation of deceptive findings in the management literature.  In a field that aspires to provide useful advice to managers, researchers need to focus on practically important effects that are robust across a wide variety of settings.  To identify practically meaningful findings, methodologists have recommended the reporting of effect sizes and confidence intervals as an alternative to NHST.  Recently, approaches for estimating confidence intervals for effect size measures have also been introduced (Cummings & Finch, 2001; Kline, 2004).  The application of alternatives to NHST by management researchers, however, has been limited by both a lack of sensitivity regarding the inherent problems of NHST and a limited familiarity with alternative approaches.  Our two-hour workshop addresses these issues in the following three modules:

    • Critique of NHST
    • Alternatives to NHST
    • Round-table discussion for hands-on advice

No pre-registration is required to attend this session.

    Dear AOM Members,

We call your attention to our PDW session, "Sustaining Innovation in a Global

System", on Saturday, August 8th, from 12:10  to 2:40 pm at Hyatt Regency

    Chicago in Addams.

We bring together scholars from diverse disciplines and perspectives to focus on

topics relevant to sustaining innovation in a rapidly integrating global system

where national systems of innovation are individually insufficient to address

global challenges such as competition, climate change, pollution, and economic

    crises.

The PDW panelists’ presentations will incorporate Q&A and dialogue with

    participants.

Topics will be related to the following critical inter-linked areas: (1)

Characterizing a global system and providing perspectives on ‘sustaining

innovation’; (2) mechanisms of globalization of innovation including

institutions (public and private), firm strategies, organizational forms; and

    (3) the impact of globalizing innovation on firms, nations, and regions.

The panel includes David Audretsch who has pioneered research on

entrepreneurship and regional innovation. His latest book is Entrepreneurship,

Innovation and Economic Growth.  Jeff Furman has published papers on academic

science and the pharmaceutical industry, public and private spillovers, location

and strategy and national innovative capacity. Gary Herrigel’s research focuses

on the changing boundaries of firms and the arrangements that govern them in

Europe (especially Germany), the United States and Japan. His latest book is

Manufacturing Possibilities: Creative Action and the Recomposition of Industrial

Practice in the U.S., Germany and Japan. Gerry McDermott research focuses on

problems of institutional and organizational learning in the formation of

meso-level, public-private governance institutions in emerging market and

post-socialist economies, and includes a book Embedded Politics: Industrial

Networks and Institutional Change in Postcommunism. Gita Surie’s research

focuses on cross border innovation, technology transfer, distributed

entrepreneurship and development and alliances between entrepreneurial and

multinational firms, and includes a book, Knowledge, Organizational Evolution

and Market Creation: The Globalization of Indian Firms from Steel to Software.

Pre-registration is not required but recommended. You are encouraged to submit

abstracts prior to attending the workshop.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Apologies for cross-postings!

International Journal of Innovation Management: Special Issue on Open Innovation and the Integration of Suppliers

    Guest Editor

Dr. Alexander Brem, School of Business and Economics, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and VEND consulting GmbH, Nuremberg

    Background

Open innovation describes an innovation paradigm shift from a closed to an open innovation model (Chesbrough, 2003). With this idea, the term open innovation became one of the most common used buzzwords of recent years, with a plethora of research. To date, many companies are already using these principles in practice as well, especially when it comes to the integration of customers. However, the concept has been criticized for being too prescriptive and for offering little new to innovation research or practice (Trott and Hartmann, 2009). For instance, the lead-user concept (von Hippel 1988, 2005) became one of the most important trends in innovation management in the last ten years, but is open innovation any more than the lead-user concept (see IJIM Special Issue on User Innovation, 2008, 12(3))?

Hardly anybody outside a company knows its products and processes better than its suppliers (Bessant, 2003; Petersen et al., 2003; von Hippel, 1995).

Research confirms that intensive integration of suppliers in the value creation process positively influences the success of the company, particularly in highly competitive industries (Wingert, 1997). This is a result of the progressing reduction in the depth of value creation of manufacturers and the increasing transfer of know-how towards the suppliers.

In multilevel business-to-business relationships, the suppliers often have the best or the only access and comprehensive knowledge about the end users (Groher, 2003). A practical example for supplier integration is the use of guest engineers (Maylor, 2001). Therefore, suppliers determine the scope of possible innovations, which most companies do not actively use yet. The main risk for suppliers is the danger of releasing or using confidential expertise gleaned from other sources. Reciprocal trust is critical for this to work (Groher, 2003). Instruments such as the continuous improvement model or collaborative engineering already involve the suppliers, but mostly on an operative level only. Hence, suppliers are an important source for open innovation.

In this context, theoretical and conceptual papers on supplier integration and challenges on the firm level are welcome. Empirical studies that feature examples and results of supplier integration are encouraged, as well as papers on success factors and risks. Comparative studies that examine similarities and differences between different sectors and countries are also welcome.

    POSTDOC OPPORTUNITY – QUT, AUSTRALIA

Get a head start in your academic career! The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research Cluster (EIC) at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, is offering the opportunity to spend 12- 24 months as salaried Postdoc at our school.

This is one of nine Postdoctoral Research Fellowships being offered by the Faculty of Business. This position will be filled by a young researcher with a completed Ph.D. (before the end of 2009), who aspires to contribute to the international research frontier in entrepreneurship and/or innovation, and who has already shown promise of such ability. Very limited teaching will be expected.

    EIC (
http://www.bus.qut.edu.au/research/acbr/eirp/) is rapidly making progress towards reaching its ambitious goal of establishing itself in the international elite in entrepreneurship research. We currently have a group of approximately 30 Faculty and PhD researchers and substantial research funding. The following recent achievements reflect the vibrant nature of our entrepreneurship and research community:

This year we had six papers by eight authors accepted to the Academy of Management Meeting and four papers by five different authors accepted to the highly competitive Babson Conference (BCERC).

The EIC team has recently been awarded the largest business/economics Discovery Grant in the country by the Australian Research Council to conduct an Australian PSEDII type study and several other large research grants. Entrepreneurship & Innovation has also become one of five recognized research area with internal funding from the QUT Faculty of Business.

Professor Per Davidsson, Assistant Dean, Research for the Faculty of Business, was elected to the executive of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management in 2007, and is this year Program Chair of the scholarly program.

We have had recent hits in journals like Strategic Management Journal; Journal of Business Venturing; Journal of Management Studies; Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice; Academy of Management Learning and Education; Small Business Economics; Journal of Business Ethics, and many others.

In 2007 we hosted the regional BCERC equivalent, the AGSE Entrepreneurship Research Exchange.

We have an increasing number of research students in entrepreneurship, and we regularly host visiting academics in this field.

When QUTs MBA program made the Financial Times top 100 list in 2004 it was the first in Queensland to ever do so, and only the third in Australia. The QUT Faculty of business was also the first in the country to achieve "Triple Crown Accreditation" (AACSB; AMBA; EQUIS).

We invite young and ambitious researchers to join this stimulating research environment for 12 to 24 months in 2010/11. The position would give the right candidate an excellent opportunity to both benefit from and contribute to this environment. The position is not tied to a particular project, although there are opportunities to engage in ongoing EIC projects. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to further develop their thesis (or other already on-going work) into published papers as well as becoming involved in new projects in collaboration with members of our staff. Initially positions would be offered for 12 months with the opportunity to extend each appointment for another 12 months if both parties agree.

The Post Doctoral salary is currently AUD $68,448 per annum (currently the AUD is approximately 0.8 USD). Costs of living in Brisbane are reasonable. Office, computer facilities and opportunities for conference travel will be provided. EIC benefits from QUT's excellent library resources, which give electronic access to a very large number of journals. Further information on the Faculty's research programs can be found at www.bus.qut.edu.au/research/acbr

Applicants must have finished their Ph.D. before taking up the position, and should preferably be able to start in January 2010. Application forms and guidelines may be obtained from the Research Support Office or via the web at
    http://www.bus.qut.edu.au/research/researchsupp/forms.jsp.

EIC is located at the Gardens Point campus in the central parts of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia. Brisbane is a growing city of 1.5 million with easy access to the beaches at Gold and Sunshine Coasts as well as the rainforest parks in the hinterland. For further information about Brisbane, use these link: www.ourbrisbane.com    http://www.hrd.qut.edu.au/new/brisbane/

The application must be received by the Team Leader, Research Support Office, Faculty of Business, GPO Box 2434 Brisbane 4001 by no later than Friday 18 September 2009.

Note that we have only one position of this kind and that it will be very competitive. Before lodging a formal application you may want to explore the opportunity further. Ranking of firms by their innovation performance

We are just beginning a research project in which we want to sample firms among other things according to their innovation performance. Are there any (public?) databases that I should know about? I know the Fortune innovation ranking but that includes only 70 firms or so. What we are looking for ideally is to cover the Dow Global 2000 or a similar universe. Any suggestions are welcome.
